Ok, I lied, not all days are insanely early, today was actually insanely early, as in 4am early. Today was the day where we prayed to see lions, and since our best chance of seeing them is first thing in the morning, we got our asses out of bed and were on the game drive by seven. Like the days prior, we saw many, many ungulates, particularly kobs. In fact, we saw hundreds of kobs! They were all over the park, to the left and right of the jeep, and crossing the road in front of us. We saw a couple square off and fight and even got to see a couple mating. We were, after all, in an area of the park called Kob's Mating Grounds, so we can officially say it lives up to ... read more

Today's adventure would begin early. . . oh who am I kidding, everyday on the safari is insanely early. Now we were off to the Queen Elizabeth National park for the next two days, which is home to prides of lions, and would likely be our only chance of seeing them on the whole safari. Any of the African cats are generally the most exciting to see, as they are very rare and many tourists don't get a chance at seeing them. We didn't get lucky seeing a leopard on the game drive at Lake Mburo, but we all had our fingers crossed for lions in Queen E. As we drove through the park to get to the Kazinga Channel we saw many more ungulates roaming the savannah, including kobs and waterbucks, as well as vast ... read more

Rugazi week 3 Day 27- Baby Gena’s birthday (in the kind words of the Ugandan students)!!!! In the morning I went to the general ward with Bernard and Gena. In the afternoon Ben, Gena and I went to Saint Michael’s High school to arrange a presentation to their students towards hand hygiene and latrine cleanliness. The meeting was successful and the school agreed to having a presentation and after that event Rugazi group B went to meet with the local Village Health Team (VHT) about collaborating in the a workshop towards latrine cleanliness that is set for the coming up Tuesday. Throughout the whole afternoon I was assigned to distracting Gena while the others prepped for her surprise party. Around 6 or 7 we all surprised Gena for her birthday and sang a very long and ... read more

24 June: Queen Elizabeth National Park Our day started off early as we decided to do the trekking for the chimpanzees in Kailnzu forest. Once we arrived to find our guides for the trek, we had to split in two groups. Our group was Michael, Lionus, Samantha, Charlotte, Sophie, Dave, Tamara, Nichole, and myself. We started a long hike downwards through the forest. It was slippery along he way but an enjoyable hike. After about an hour and a half we were able to spot the chimpanzees. They were up in the trees right above us, about four or five of them. Samantha got some great photos of them and I had a few. Was amazing to see. We then did a nice hike out of the forest where we emerged from the edge of the ... read more

Day 18- Saturday June 7th-Breakfast we had homemade somosas (yummy!!). Early in the morning we had a fairly bad rain/hail storm and then for the rest of the day it was sunny out. Lounged around the health centre and played volleyball with a homemade ball (made out of plastic bags and yarn) and made new friends. Had a group meeting in the evening about our community project. It was a fairly quiet day. Day 19- had chapattis for breakfast and chicken for lunch!!!! Another quiet day and a late group meeting. Day 20- Mike and I changed up our "ward rounds" and went to General ward for the week. Mariam a Ugandan student nurse also joined us. This day was quite jumbled since the clinical officers were following Mike, so I kind of bounced between pediatrics ... read more

Day 11- the journey to Rugazi village....07:00 am the six of us are all packed up again and walking over to the university from the residence. Life Lesson 3: pack light because at some point in your travels you will have to haul luggage for a far distance and possibly up and down sets of stairs (got in my cardio for the day hahaha). Best part was hauling heavy luggage accross the busy highway, lets just say it was a bunch of women running like mad and screaming. Once at the university we sat around for 2 and 1/2 hours for everyone to arrive and arrange luggage. Once everyone was assigned to their bus, lugagge and other equipment was packed, we managed to leave at 10:00 am. My group managed to be assigned to the "menopause ... read more

Hello everyone , I finally have consistent internet. Currently I am at Rugazi village for my four week placement and the weather is hot and I finally got a little sunburnt today. Anyways like the title of this blog I am going to briefly tell you about my first 12 days of my trip. Day 1- At 05:45 am my lovely friend drove me to the airport where I met up with four other group members from the University of Saskatchewan at the Saskatoon airport. Our flights go from Saskatoon, Toronto, Dubai then Entebbe. Once the four of us landed in Toronto international airport, we had a 10 hour layover there....long but we were able to take the time to get to know each other better. The flight from Toronto to Dubai was a 12 hour ... read more

Diary 6 - Queen Elizabeth National Park We camped at the Simba Camp Site in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, in Western Uganda for 2 nights – 21-22 July. The area had a bar, dining and lounge room, and a variety of accommodation from double rooms, rooms with multiple bunk beds and the tent area. The park covers an area of over 1978 sq kms between Lake Edward and Lake George, around the Kasinga Channel connecting the two. The park has a wide variety of terrain, including volcanic craters, some forming lakes, grassy plains and tropical forest. The Kasinga Channel has the largest concentration of hippos in the world! This park is like a more concentrated version of East African parks as far as animals are concerned, although, unless the mist-shrouded Ruwenzori Mountains are visible, there ... read more

Wow...where to begin? The team told us when we got to Africa that the end of the first week was always the hardest and they were absolutely right. Yesterday was by far the most difficult day that we have had since we arrived. Before heading to the school we decided to stop and pick up school supplies at Mr. Patel's. While we were there his wife made us his famous and absolutely delicious chai tea! When we arrived at school the children were in the midst of chapel. We listened for a while to their beautiful singing before getting out of the matata to join them. One of the teachers that I am working alongside came to speak to me during the chapel time and told me that her son was in the hospital, beside the ... read more

Today was an all day travel day to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, for Gorilla tracking tomorrow. Since the road to Bwindi passes through Queen Elizabeth NP, I ended up with a complementary game drive. Not much to see, since the lions and other animals are usually further in. But, I did see Elephants, large troops of Baboons, a few Uganda Kobs (an antelope that is a national symbol), a crested crane (the national bird), a snake (going too fast to be more specific), some colobus monkeys and lots of birds. The lions here are known for their tree climbing habit, just like the lions in Lake Manyara NP in Tanzania. Left Kampala at 8:00 and arrived at Bwindi at 18:00 with only two small breaks - a very short lunch and the obligatory photo at the equator ... read more
