It is noon on our final day in Mbarara, it’s been pouring rain outside since early this morning, and Rayden, Brooke, and Angela have ventured into the rain in search of an authentic street-made Rolex. I think Ugandan food has grown onto us since we’ve arrived in the country… Rolex is definitely a favourite of ours. Today, we head out to our community health placements, and boy, what a ride has it been to get to this point. I should start with pointing out a major theme of this trip: African time. Granted, this is a generalization, but this term describes the common attitude towards schedules, meeting times, and life in general in Uganda. While Westerners (especially North Americans) have a tight grip on their time and look at it as minutes and hours that make ... read more

The drive from Bwindi to Kibale (where we have a permit for Chimp trekking tomorrow) takes us up the western side of Uganda through the Queen Elizabeth National Park. We don’t expect that much from the park, but do want to try to find the tree climbing lions in the south of the park. The lions are actually quite easy to find – there are 6 in one tree but these are the only ones we see. I manage to bog the Rav4 in a boggy part of the trail. My travel companions are a bit worried about out pushing us out as we have just seen lions up the road, but another vehicles comes past soon and it doesn’t take too much effort to push us clear. We drive along the main road through the ... read more

Things were looking up weather-wise. For a second day in a row, it was mostly hot and sunny, with the heavy rains taking place at night. Today was spent visiting the northern part of the the park. The draw here is a boat ride along the Kazinga Channel to see wildlife from the river. There wasn't a lot to see, but the drive thru the park and the boat ride both made for a relaxing day. However, as we were leaving the park at the end of the day, word got out that there was a leopard walking around outside of the park gates, so the race was on among all the drivers to get to it first for the best viewing -- and hopes for a bigger tip. We got there before most, but others ... read more

In the morning, I left one national park for another to observe another type of wildlife. In addition to having the usual type of animal attractions found in other parks -- elephants, giraffes, hippos, birds, buffalo, lions, etc -- what makes the Queen Elizabeth National Park so unique is that in the southern portion of the park, it is home to tree climbing lions, which is supposed to be a rare phenomena, to be found in only two or three places in the world. My driver/guide and I spent about three hours driving around, looking for the lions. Instead of looking toward the plains, you spend all your time looking up in trees, hoping for that rare sighting, all the while neglecting all the other animals. At the end of the drive, we had resolved that ... read more

I’m a little behind in blogging my adventure. But if you bear with me, I’ll catch you up. Last Saturday, three of the muzungus returned to Mbarara to start their hospital placements. Five of us elected to stay here in Rugazu and see through a little bit more of the community projects. Dayna and I are the remaining muzungus in Rugazi Group B and Jill, Joline and Carrie remained here to work with Group A. The past two weeks our group has been making a lot of headway on our community project. Our goal/objective (or “measurable result” as they call it here) is to increase the number of people using family planning in our village. Two weeks ago Britany, Dayna and I were stationed in OPD. The week was fairly standard, except for Thursday and Friday. ... read more

Well this week has been another busy week here in Rugazi. This was our fourth week here, and originally was going to be the last week for all the Canadian students. However, since the Ugandan students are staying another 5 weeks there are 5 Canadians who have decided to extend our stay here in Rugazi. We will be staying an extra 11 days and returning to Mbarara July 7 to join with the rest of the group working in the hospital there. We parted ways with Brooklyn and Britany on Saturday, who are now both in Mbarara and will be starting work at the hospital on Monday. I’m sure you are all wondering what we got up to this past week, so let me (Dayna) take you through our adventures. Sunday was Father’s day and Rugazi ... read more

This week has been a lot more involved with the community which has been amazing!!! At the Health Center we welcomed a few more members to our team and said goodbye to a lot of the students from KIU (Kampala International University) so it has been a huge learning curve for us as we have to take on way more patients but with way less people. We are doing great though and putting in the time we need for the most part! Seems like every week here there is a public holiday or some reason (usually rain) that invites several to not attend work. Speaking of the weather, we are seeing a shift to a wetter week and cooler temperatures. The locals are laughing at us Canadians out in our t-shirts finally feeling comfortable with the ... read more

This week was busy! There was not a lot for us to do in maternity so we tried to make ourselves useful in other places. Wednesday it was very cold and pouring rain. None of the Ugandan students woke up to go to work. The clinic is primarily staffed by students, so when we arrived at work, the outpatient clinic was open but no one was present to run lab tests. One quick training session later and my super nurses, Dayna and Britany, were drawing blood and running tests for HIV, malaria and TB. My job was to record the results in the laboratory test register and return the charts to the clinic officer. It was nice to do something different for a change. Thursday we all took an hour off in the morning to do ... read more

Our day-to-day life is pretty awesome in Rugazi. During the weekdays, we are busy with both our clinical and community work. Evenings and weekends seem to be filled with different versions of homework, errands and social gatherings. I do a lot of stretching and yoga. In fact, today when I went to do yoga, several of the other students came out and more or less followed along with me. It was fun trying new poses together. I’m really glad I brought my yoga mat to Uganda. This past Saturday 5 of us (Joline, Britany, Dayna, Julius and myself) traveled to Mbarara. Dayna had chipped her tooth and really needed to visit a dentist. The rest of us accompanied her and picked up supplies. We bought supplies for the clinic using money that we raised through a ... read more
