Our Lord gave us a monumental charge - to go into all the world with the saving gospel. He died that men might live. This commission in His own words reads: "Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:" (Matthew 28:19). The "second part" of this charge is: "teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20). Once a soul has been freed from the bondage of sin, continued teaching is vital to further strengthen this initial foundation of faith. The attrition rate among new converts is often traceable to inadequate initial teaching and the lack of "counting the cost." ... read more

Last week we were busy walking the pathways in Iringa and Ipogolo passing out fliers. We were advertizing the restart of our Saturday classes. We took a recess in order to make our special journey to Malawi. That proved to be a good two weeks of teaching Personal Evangelism. Our advertizing last week included distributing over 2,000 invitations and also having it advertized for about three days on the radio. Our morning session is conducted in a class room at the School for the Deaf. The afternoon class is conducted at the church building. We are thankful that we got off to a good start. We had a number of Christians attending at both sessions and 5 non-Christians in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. Interestingly, one of our visitors said he had found a ... read more

Hitch-hiking across Tanzania is an adventurous way to travel. Meeting Andrew and Mozza (a brand new 4x4) on a self drive adventure across Tanzania a lucky turn of events. Saving on expensive tours and set itineraries an off road adventure provides a unique and surreal experience right into the wild heart of Africa. Being lucky enough to travel into remote villages is the desire of any extreme traveler. Dealing with dirt tracks, potholes and the fear of being stranded or hijacked the reality. Cutting through central Tanzania from Iringa to Dodoma seemed a good idea at the time. Setting off along 215Km of 'A' road, you would expect to arrive in Dodoma before dark. As you leave Iringa the sealed road soon turns into dirt and dust. At every corner you hope for it to get ... read more

Most parents have a natural bias toward their own offspring. Since it is expected that a father provide “for his own, and specially his own household” (1 Timothy 5:8), it is no wonder that he would also take particular interest in their development. Joy and I are very pleased with the service our children are striving to render toward others. This past Saturday, Ed and Lina Crookshank hosted a youth gathering at their home. Young people from many congregations came to participate. There was a table prepared in the driveway where those arriving could sign the register. However, after the program had started, a truckload arrived and these attendees likely did not get their names recorded. The attendance was about 130 young men and women. Once it was time to begin, everyone took a seat on ... read more

For the past twelve weeks we have been conducting classes each Saturday at two locations. Every Saturday morning I have been teaching near our home in a room at the School of the Deaf (Shule Ya Viziwi). In the afternoons Carey has been teaching the same material at the church building down in Ipogolo. Since nothing was available at the school, I took some shelf boards I had, and from them built a lecturn. Olivia was one who attended all these classes without fail. You may recall that she recently obeyed the gospel. So we thank God for giving fruit from our efforts. Six weeks covered a study surveying the Old Testament, and the next six weeks were for New Testament Survey. After I had researched and written all the lessons, a proof English copy was ... read more

The apostle Peter, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, explained the purpose of baptism. Baptism "doth now save you . . . not the putting away of the filth of the flesh. . ." (1 Peter 3:21). Just as water was a means of saving the eight human inhabitants of the ark (1 Peter 3:20), so today water plays a role in our salvation. It does not clean the body, it is for cleansing of the soul (cf. Acts 2:38; 22:16; Romans 6:3, 4). This afternoon when Carey had finished teaching the Saturday afternoon session on New Testament Survey he drove with Jacob, Charles, David, and Degratius (nicknamed "Deo"). Meanwhile, I was driving with Joy, Luke, Lindsey, Editha, and Olivia. We would meet together at a petrol station. Joy had already gathered some towels and I ... read more

For quite some time we have desired to visit with the brethren who worship in the town of Ilula. In the central part of Tanzania where we now live, there are few congregations. Ilula is a town about 40 kilometers from Iringa. We arose early on Sunday, picked up Charles and Editha, and headed down from Iringa town to the main road. It has been extremely windy recently, and during the drive I felt the Land Cruiser being buffeted by the winds. At one point I stopped just to double check that the tires were fine (since last week I rotated the tires). Our travel time took about one hour. Once we reached the town, we rendezvoused with the preacher and he directed us to his home. It certainly is reminiscent of New Testament times when ... read more

In a recent post we introduced you to Prisca. We had asked the question: "What would you do if you were in her sandals?" Well, we are happy to say that yesterday morning, we took her to the water, and she stepped out of her sandals and entered the water! Allow me to back up and give you the details. Yesterday morning, we arose earlier than usual, grabbed two towels, and drove to pick up Charles and his wife Editha, and Prisca. On the way I turned on the Land Cruiser heater to have it warming the vehicle inside. Together we drove to a pond of water not too far from our house. We chose this site instead of the river, since it was closer and we wanted to have time to let Prisca change into ... read more

I wish to introduce you to two Tanzanians. One is a young man and the other is a young lady. Charles and I have been having studies with Alex. He is a bright youth who seems to have keen interest in learning the Word of God. He is presently living in one small room. When we arrive at his room for class, Jacob and I duck as we go through the small doorway. Alex opens the shutter board that covers the small window. I sit on the small bed beside him, since it takes up much of the room. Jacob sits upon a small wooden stool that is about 11 inches off the ground. A chair is positioned in front of us to serve as a table, and I write each verse in Swahili as we ... read more
