Greetings dear readers! The word "wedding" undoubtedly stirs a variety of thoughts for different people. For a widow, hearing the term may prompt both happy recollections as well as sadness for present loneliness. For a fiancée, there is likely the feeling of anticipated joy. Often in America, a young couple desiring to be wed, inform the parents, "set the date," and inform family and friends. All things are then set in motion; a countdown to the big day begins! Please allow me to share with you a situation our brother Charles is facing. Charles and Editha are both Tanzanians. Each is a member of the Lord's church. I enjoyed having Charles as a student at the School of Preaching for two years. Last year these two "set the date" for a June 2010 wedding. Sadly, Charles' ... read more

Unfortunately, we still do not have internet at our home, which means we are not able to communicate with everyone as often as we wish. However, we are thankful for a nice internet cafe in town that has been a great means of getting us by in the mean time. We have been continually busy, morning till night. When George fixes one problem, it seems two more pop up. We are making progress, and hopefully our water/plumbing problems are slowly being resolved, thanks to George's ingenuity. Last weekend, during the night, we heard quite a racket in the attic. We all knew that whatever it was - there was probably more than one, and they were larger than mice. We were guessing rats, and so the next day George bought some rat traps, which he and ... read more

First of all, we'd like to let you all know that we are alive and well in Iringa. We've had quite an eventful past couple of weeks! We are now trying to get our house somewhat functional so that we can carry on every day activities and get busy with the work we came here to do. We do not have internet at our house; therefore, an internet cafe is our means of getting online for the time being. Until then, here are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure. :) ... read more

The Samfords had not been back in the country even long enough to recover from jet lag before Carey agreed to take another journey. Carey, Joy, and I left about 5:00 a.m. on a Thursday. The goal of this excursion was to travel the 14+ hours down to Iringa in search of rental housing. Once we reached the junction at Chalinze, Charles Mwakalonge was waiting there and joined us. Charles, one of our recent graduates, has agreed to move and serve as our translator. Actually, Carey has progressed so admirably with his Swahili linguistics, his need for a translator will not be long. Even though we stopped merely for diesel fuel and restrooms it ended up being a 14 hour journey. We must admit that the cleanest “restrooms” were the trees by the side of the ... read more

Hi everyone, First I have to say, I have the best field assistant on Earth. I am just so happy to have such a trustworthy, hard working guy looking after things out here! I am back in the field and have a little portable modem with me this time, so I can access the internet (if briefly), which is very exciting and luxurious! I’ve spent the morning meeting with field assistants who are supervised by the superstar mentioned above, each of whom collects data on elephant raids in their own village.. it seems people are having even more problems this year, with both elephants and rainfall, which came very late and was EXTREMELY low.. when it should rain nearly everyday for weeks/months, it only rained a total of 5 days over the entire rainy season. For ... read more

Ahhh, this country. It feels like so many things have happened since I last posted, I don’t know where to start! Lots of ups and downs… I’ll start with what’s freshest in my mind at the moment, and which I will warn you is very sad- at least it was for me. On the way back from the field 2 days ago we stopped by a village where a field assistant I worked with last year lives (one fun piece of news- she named her daughter’s middle name after me!!! I am feeling very honored and excited about this). The man I’m working with this year had bought some chickens from her, so we stopped by to pick them up. While we were there, I spotted a little puppy splayed out in the dirt all by ... read more

Day 13 - Dar Es Saleem - 11/8/09 We left at 0900 again and only 1 minibus turned up. With number swelling due to people arriving here early needing to be picked up as well there were too many of us for the one minibus. A second one arrived and it was pure luxury; blacked out windows, curtains with uber comfortable spacious seats. We had an hour to kill in Stone Town, which I used to get some cash, post one last postcard and use the internet. The ferry seemed to be less chaotic then the way over though this time no luggage was allowed on, it all went on at the front. I really don’t like the idea of leaving my luggage with a stranger! The sea was rough, rocking the ferry like a toy ... read more

Today we crossed into Tanzania. The border crossing was fine - hakuna matada! The journey was quiet and uneventful apart from Richard (our driver) getting a speeding ticket and running over a chicken. It was very hot in the morning when we stopped for breakfast and I discovered maple syrup on toast - mmm! We arrived at Iringa at about 5pm and put our tents up. I had a nice hot shower and then went to the bar for delicious hot chocolate and amerula - divine!! Amerula is a liquor from the fruit of the merula tree and it tastes a little like Baileys but more milkier. We had a traditional meal in therestaurant of carrot and cardamom soup with bread (lovely) and then ugali (like pap maize), spinach, beans in a brown sauce (nice) and meat ... read more

We left the coast and headed towards Malawi, it was to far to travel in a day so we headed to our campsite in Iringa. On the way we drove through Mikumi NP where we saw Elephants drinking, Giraffes eating and loads of Zebras. It made a nice break in the drive otherwise we were looking at trees. The only problem was that we couldn't stop for toilet breaks!!! When we got to the campsite the sun was starting to set and there was not many places left to camp because a load of other overland trucks were already at the site. Nick decided to go for a run (came back early because he was scared by noises in the bush) I made my way to the bar with the others. The bar was a thatched ... read more

07.06.07 6:00 in the morning we left the African Parks house in Kalabo for the ride home. Still pitch black outside we navigated withy GPS to the entrance of the dirt road that would lead us back to Sitoti and further to Katima Molilo (Zambian Side). There is no petrol station before Livingstone at all, so we calculated hard and decided we would make it. Well, we arrived on the vapour in Livingstone. What a ride again. A shortcut turned out to be waterlogged and we had to double back another 50 Km through very deep sand. Once again, the local people are openly friendly and helpful. Sitting on our bonnet an old man directed us through thick bush and sandy foot paths to a track that eventually would connect to a more recent track. ... read more
