Who’s stolen the Sun? We had great plans of relaxing outside our apartments, reading and letting the kids run about the garden but when we awoke it was to the sound of torrential rain, which sort of scuppered that idea. So instead after breakfast we went for a walk from the hotel to the wine estate and booked ourselves into a wine tasting session, kids too; they would be taste testing grape juices. The Spier estate has a lot to offer - we wandered around the craft market, played pooh-sticks with the (aggravatingly enthusiastic) estate river, winced as the kids played on the adventure playground, and bought lunch from the site supermarket (which excelled in massively calorific desserts). The picnic service was suspended, though. We went back to the wine shop and were ushered into the ... read more

I've had a good two days - not as fantastic as the shark dive but good. On Tuesday I went on a tour of the wine lands - Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschoek. We visited 4 vineyards and tasted about 26 wines, brandies and dessert wines. I have to say that I was not blown away by any of South Africa's wines. They were good... but none that wowed me. Well... maybe the Sweet Red, but that was a dessert wine so does it count? We also got to try some cheese which was really nice - yummy fetas, havartis and this nice cheese with cranberries in it... Yum. I also had probably the best Chicken Club I've ever had at one of the wineries. By the end of the tour we were all sloshed and it ... read more

I arrived in Capetown yesterday. It was my second day in Africa but really the first day I was actually going to see anything. On the first day I went straight to the lodge which was so close to the airport I could actually see the plane that I arrived on from my window! In Johannesburg the airport is approximately 25kms from the City and the traffic is notoriously bad, so I figured it would be easier just to stay out. I arrived in Capetown in the morning, after getting up at first light, my stomach still in knots from my conversation with the man on my flight from Australia. He had me stressing big time! I could still here his voice in the back of my head "52 people die in Johannesburg everyday", "Mozambiquans are ... read more

THROUGH THE PROTEA AND INTO THE CLOUDS I’m no botanist. Actually, I’m barely qualified to mow the lawn. If you sent me into the garden to weed I’d be just as likely to yank up a rare heirloom bulb than to pull up a dirty dandelion. So yesterday, when I chose to hike in the mountains to look at flowers, I surprised even myself. But these are no ordinary flowers, these Protea. In fact to use the word “flower” to describe the Protea seems patently unjust. Flower is to Protea as house cat is to leopard, as guppy is to grouper. They are blooming now, as the oaks redden and shed their south of the equator leaves on the green South African lawns. An autumn Protea forest explodes presently on the sides of the mountains, their ... read more

4 weeks and counting....wow. I can't imagine leaving my home in Stellenbosch... This past week has been by far the fastest week ever. in fact, every week gets shorter and shorter. I guess this one felt so short because I was crazy busy with finals and papers. Luckily my 20 page community development paper got extended till Wednesday - thank goodness. Let's see, had my Afrikaans written exam on Wednesday-let's just say I'm thankful that it's only worth 15% of my grade. :P And the oral exam is this following Wednesday...Luckily I'm with Julia and Stefanie so we are getting together and making a script of what we want to talk about. Monday I finally got to wine tasting!! Went with Pia and Stefanie and some other german friends of Pia's. We went to 6 wine ... read more

A NON SEQUITOR GREETING ON FREEDOM DAY Hello to all my friends, There’s a man down the street who is slowly walling himself in, literally. I can’t help but thinking of Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado” as we watch the red bricks rise. In itself this should not be an unusual sight. In fact, his house prior to the arrival of the sand and bricks and stone, was one of the dwellings in our neighborhood (perhaps 50%) that did not crouch behind a tall wall, a growling dog, and an automatic gate. In other cities, like Johannesburg, it would be a rarity to see a house that was not protected by a wall. And the walls in that city are higher, more formidable, and topped with razor wire. This one is a pleasant two story white structure ... read more

Hi everyone! April was by far the most challenging month for me - academically, emotionally, spiritually . . . At the end of the month though, I can say that it was a time of enormous growth. Yay, this month I have successfully implemented my service project, Body Mapping, at my site on Delheim Wine Farm with the kids in the after-school club. On Wednesday, April 16th I carried out a trust-building activity called "relationship pie" that gave the children an opportunity to think critically about their relationships. I feel that it went very smoothly, however I found it difficult to get the teacher, Geraldeen, involved. The next week we started the Body Mapping. My goal was to finish the body maps that day, however, things did not go according to plan which I was not ... read more

Toe wil ek aansoek doen vir 'n visa ... read more

So, how do you do it? How do you write about the most important day of your life and do it justice? I guess that that's why it's taken me more than 2 months to pull up a fresh page and try. I feel so inadequate. So, please, be patient with me as I try to relive the best moments of my life... The day before had been pretty close to perfect. We'd spent lunch with my grandparents at a restraunt on a farm they once owned. They showed us were everything used to be... my Grannie's old bedroom, where the peach trees grew and then the old oak where my grandpa proposed. It was wonderful. So, feeling well fed, utterly relaxed and overflowing with love, we drove off to meet with some of our friends ... read more
