Today was the day Jill had been waiting for nearly a year - the Meerkat Safari! The Safari was to take place where the Discovery Channel film Meerkat Manor and because of this we couldn’t do the evening tour, we had to meet the guide at 6:40am for the morning tour. Not too bad I hear you say, but when the meeting place is 80miles away over a mountain pass then you won’t be surprised to hear that it entails a 5am start! So up we got and off we drove before dawn even thought about cracking. Jill checked her texts after 70miles on the road at about 6:30am. It turns out that the guide texted us yesterday at tea-time saying that the trip was cancelled!!! Slightly shell shocked we managed to get a local Wimpy ... read more

Geo: -33.5928, 22.2025First thing on the day's busy agenda was to visit an ostrich farm. This area has many ostrich farms. First we fed them, which was a bit scary to have the huge birds stabbing their beaks into my hand. At the same time as they took the food they also managed to slobber saliva onto my hand in return for the food I gave them! I thought the baby ostriches would be more gentle than the old ones- wrong! They were mean and nasty, so I gave the rest of my food to the older ostriches. After that we learnt about what they do at the farm with the ostriches, such as sell the feathers and the skin is used to make (very expensive) handbags. We then went to another part of the farm ... read more

The drive to Oudtshoorn (pronounced oats-horn) was absolutely beautiful. It’s located in the Swartberg mountains, and the views as we drove through them were incredible. We ran into a little bit of accommodation trouble, because there was a huge Afrikaans festival going on and everywhere was booked so we ended up staying in a different hostel each night we were there. The first night was at Oasis Shanti, which was really nice. Oudtshoorn is famous for its ostrich farms, and they fed us ostrich eggs for breakfast (well, one egg between a bunch of us - one ostrich egg is equal to about 18 chicken eggs). They also organized transportation for us during the day so we could hit up all the things we wanted to see. The transport was actually through another hostel, Backpackers Paradise, ... read more

EASTER, ALOE, AND SELMA'S KIDS RETURN TO MATJIESVLEI The Groot Swartberg mountains rise all around us. Easter morning is stunningly bright, already hot, and we hide in the shade of the front stoep (porch). Across the valley a baboon barks. The mountains are covered with a forest of aloe. These are not the living room variety of aloe, soft little potted plants that one finds at the florist. These are muscled tree-like creatures, robust, with spined “leaves” that are as thick as a Schwarzenegger bicep. They are layered in an impenetrable pattern, but appear luscious and fleshy. In June they flower and the Groot Swartberg are awash in magnificent aloe bloom. Our little Easter house was built in 1872 by an Afrikaner pioneer and sits on a hillside that looks down into a cultivated valley ... read more

We left Tsitikama and headed off to Karoo. The drive wasn't so bad as we stopped at The Heads, two cliffs that come together to form a small bay. Supposedly these cliffs look like two heads facing each other, I tired my best to see these heads, but only came up with two cliffs. I took some pictures hoping that they would look like heads when I saw them again, but still I only see two cliffs.... Oh well, the area around the cliffs was beautiful with some great tidal pools and crashing waves. From the heads we drove to the Kango Caves where we were to do a one hour tour of the 3 main caves. Our guide obviously didn't listen to the instructions from Cassidy and took us on the whole tour that involved ... read more

Had a fun day at Oudsthoorn ... which was full of excitement .. 1. Checked out of hotel - we only had one night here 2. Drove round residential areas of the town ... very pretty streets that just suddenly end, seems a nice residential area to live 3. Visited an Ostrich Show Farm (just before turning off to the Cango Caves). The guide was excellent, told us the history of Ostriches, explained the eggs, watched them hatch, stroked a one week old bird, took us to mother, and we had fun watching Julie and others ride an Ostrich. It was fun, and they run the Farm very well, the Ostriches were clearly looked after. I even had a back massage by ostrich - nice! Unfortunately we laughed so much that none of us managed to ... read more

Abbie - we have some fantastic pictures of baby Ostriches, we saw some hatching from their large eggs, and stroked one which was only a week old. Cute and soft. Our friend then rode one - very funny great fun - haven't laughed so much for ages, I was in absolute tears. The one Julie rode, was fully grown though. And Uncle Adam ate one for dinner in the evening - he said this was quite tasty too! Have some great photos to show you. We are off to see the Lions next !!! Sending you lots of love, hugs and kisses, even from all the way in South Africa - did Mum show you were we are on your map??? Give Libby and Toby a hug for me. Love you lots - Auntie Sar and ... read more

Outshoorn - ostrich country, ostrich farms everywhere. Have a long drive though mountains and desert to the brilliant Backpackers Paradise. Top tip - these guys are all over it, they have thought of everything that is annoying for backpackers and offer a solution. The guy also checks us in to a dorm on our own which is nice!! Ostrich egg breakfast for everybody - one litre of egg in each one! Yummy though... Meet some cool people, Anat from israel, Emma from states and Jao from Brazil. Spend a busy day being full on tourists. First go to the Cango caves with Emma and Anat. This is an experience not to be missed. The caves are awesome, pics do not do it justice at all - they are HUGE!! They used to have gigs in them ... read more

Clinton's first taste of South Africa was on a wine tour through Stellenbosche which also included cheese and a chocolate factory. Now, if I had have known it was going to involve a chocolate factory I may have gone, alas, I hate wine and went to a movie with Shae instead. No regrets really - Clinton bought two big chunks of chocolate back and a bottle of wine which he insisted I was going to like. (I happily ate the Choccy, tasted the wine after I received some death threats if I didn't.. and promptly tried to spit it back out.. not really, but I didn't like it as predicted!) After Stellenbosche we drove around 45 minutes to Capetown where the tour ended at approximately, precisely 10:30am. Clinton, Shae and I had a shark dive organised ... read more

Namibia was mostly an adrenalin filled trip. Firstly though we spent a few nights at Etosha National Park. Still, nothing can compare to the Masai Mara, however we did get to go on a night game drive here which was a first. The highlight of this drive was seeing lions. The tour guide got out a bright flash light and asks "If anyone asks if I used white light, what will you say?" We all chirped in with a resounding "No" and he says "Good, cos it's illegal and I'd get into a lot of trouble" He did explain that it doesn't matter too much with the lions as the light doesn't effect them, however it blinds antelope and other animals upto 45 minutes which makes them a good target for prey. He shone the light ... read more
