Cango Caves Regretfully said goodbye to Abalone Beach House to drive inland to Oudtshoorn, driving through spectacular mountain passes. First stop was Cango Caves. Recalling the recent news story of a woman becoming wedged on the Adventure Tour and stuck in the caves for 11 hours, we decided to opt for the Standard Tour, especially as the Adventure Tour is recommended for "lean people" only! We certainly didn't fancy trying to squeeze our beer bellies through a 27cm gap called The Post Box! The tour was very interesting, despite feeling like a huge tourist group complete with small annoying children. What stupid parents bring little babies and toddlers in baby backpacks on a cave tour? We felt really sorry for the little ones when the over-enthusiastic tour guide melodramatically turned all the lights off at every ... read more

by Mrs Plod Today we woke up at Onse Rus, the home where Granny lived as a child. It is her birthday today! Dad surprised us with a call right before breakfast. He was a little worried that he hadn't heard from us in a while, and wanted to let us know that Aunty Frieda was worried that she hadn't heard from us either. It was nice to hear his voice! We had another delicious breakfast (got your meusli recipe, Boo) and then pack up and headed out of town. On the way out, I realized that I had not bought any postcards, so we U-turned back to the Lazy Lizard, a coffe/curio shop and internet cafe. We thought we'd have quick e-mail check and a cup of coffee, but we were wrong. I think the ... read more

Checked out at the Marina after breakfast and another nice walk. Then I decided that I would drive to Oudsthoorn--how brave of me! It is really somthing else to drive on the other side of the road AND the other side of the car. The phrase of the morning (from Ross) was "Di, would you please think about driving a little more to the right!" He was pretty calm, given the circumstances! The phrase of the morning (from Di) was "Oh, ^&*$#!! I'm speeding again!" The speed limit for a chunk of the time was 60 or 80 km/h, so it was quite easy to go faster than that. You really don't want to speed in SA--there are cameras EVERYWHERE! Anyway, we got to Oudtshoorn (the Safari Ostrich Show Farm, specifically) in one piece. It ... read more

Sun 22nd Left early to head to Ostrich mad Oudtshoorn. We visited one of the farms there that gave a tour of their farm, including a look at their feather palace - a semi-grand house (compared to UK castles!) that were built when money was pleantiful from the sale of white feathers plucked from under the wings of male ostriches. The money stopped rolling in when feathers went out of favour because ladies struggled to get in and out of the recently arrived motor cars (so they say). Facts: Ostrich eggs are comparable to eating 20-24 chicken eggs. They can be stood on without breaking as long as they have sand underneath them to support them. Tamsin was the only one in the group of 10 or so people that rode an Ostrich. Weight restrictions ... read more

Today we have decided is going to be a chill out day. Yesterday was a long drive and we were both a bit grumpy. We have been racing around for the last 10 days and there really insn’t much to do in Oudshoorn other than the Ostriches and the Cango caves. Oudshoorn is the Ostrich capital of South Africa and they are bred mainly for their meat and skins. Kirsten is a little disappointed with the Mooiplass guest house which in her opinion seems to have lost the family feel. We leave the room early for breakfast where we have an Ostrich based breakfast of meatballs and scrambled eggs. Our host Kweis is just a little over hospitable and won’t leave us alone for 5 minutes before offering us another nugget of info on the ... read more

Today we are traveling to Oudshoorn about 400km east from the Stellenbosch along the R62 (SA equivalent of route 66 in the US). After saying an early farewell to Marli we packed and got ready to go. Before we left however we had arranged a cellar tour and tasting of the wines from the Marianne Estate. It’s weird but in the last 2 days we have driven about 200km and visited 8 wine farms but the best wine we tasted was from the farm we were staying on. Hasten to say we bought 12 bottles! In total we bought 62 bottles of wine which we ware shipping back to the UK (N.B Dad keep your hands off!). We then hit the road to Stellenbosch (in our newly acquired hire car) where Kirsten wanted to winder ... read more

After spending a lovely 4 nights in Stellenbosch we headed back to the coast to Mossel Bay. At Mossel Bay we checked out the beach where all the local surfers hang out and the cliffs and caves along the coastline. There's not much else to do at Mossel Bay, and the weather wasn't good so the next day we got on our little bus and headed to the highly recommended Oudtshoorn, a little further inland again. We had planned to stay 3 nights in Oudts but on arrival we were told that the 4th night is free so we thought what the hell - 4 nights it is! The first day we arrived pretty late so we really only had the chance to pitch the tent, have dinner, and practice our pool playing skills at the ... read more

Well, the past two days have been very exciting and exhausting. We finally left Plettenburg Bay and headed inland to this little town called Outsdhoorn. Don't ask me how to pronounce it, I have had many locals laugh at me when asking how to get there. This town is not very exciting but the backpackers hostel is amazing. It is called Paradise Backpackers and the name really says it all. I love watching Jordan doing his school work in the gardens with the owls hooting in the background. They have a really funny dog named Pheonix that will entertain you for hours - I do believe she is a bit wacko. The hostel is family run and Petra, the lady of the house, is so friendly and welcoming. She makes dinner every night, a dinner of ... read more
