“Like any other matter for public consumption, bullshit is meant primarily to satisfy the hunger of its manufacturer, for you have to believe in your own delusion in order to make people share in it.”- Lamine Pearlheart Every single year almost two million wildebeest and other plains animals migrate from Tanzania’s Serengeti to the south of Kenya’s Masai Mara region. The reason? They simply have to do this in search of lush grazing grounds across that river. There is little left on the side they are leaving. This is all dictated by the seasons and where the rains are falling. Its high risk and treacherous and covers almost 3000 kms. Just to make this all a bit more challenging, the river is infested with hundreds of crocodiles eagerly awaiting their opportunity to feast on some of ... read more

“The point of modern propaganda isn’t only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate the truth.” – Garry Kasparov Not only do we have a raging Covid-19 pandemic but, right alongside and equally alarming, is the “infodemic” underpinned by the deluge of information out there on social media and news platforms. As the clock ticks through the day (slowly during this increasingly boring home-bound captivity), there is a never-ending stream of theories, videos, posts and the like flying through cyberspace destined for our “essential to be in touch” devices. What then happens is entirely at the discretion of the receiver. The sensible thing to do is to hit the “delete” button but human curiosity has its own magnetic force which draws many of us to want to read ... read more

“The scientific theory I like best is that the rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost luggage”- Mark Russell Bloomberg reports that since Covid-19 made its unwelcome arrival, almost 2500 studies have been written on this virus. So, that means a whole bunch of epidemiologists, scientists, doctors and sadly, even politicians, have been furiously pounding their electronic devices spewing forth their version of something that has humanity mystified. A step back and view of reality indicates that we still don’t really know where and how it all started, why it spread so rapidly to even the most distant corners of the planet, why it doesn’t seem to affect children and how this pandemic will play out and end. Despite this huge number of expert studies, Covid-19 has the World in a vice-like grip of panic, ... read more

“Negativity is like burning plastic: while destroying itself, it annoys everyone with its stench.” – Charbal Tadros No point kicking off with WHO statistics on Covid-19 as it is very easy for anyone to access the data on their website dashboard. The reality is that infections and the death rate globally continue to nudge upwards albeit at declining daily rates in a number of countries. The key societal shift currently is the massive push back from civilians in a number of countries who challenge the iron fist manner in which their Governments have handled the virus. The key themes are; reacting too late, over reaction, an assault on civil liberties, lack of transparency with regards effect of measures and impact on the population and most importantly, the disastrous impact on people’s financial well-being. Economies are in ... read more

“They say a person needs three things to be truly happy in this world, someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.” – Tom Bodett The latest statistics from the WHO dashboard published at 02:00 am on 1st May 2020 (SA in brackets): Global confirmed cases: 3,145,407 (5.647) Global deaths: 221,823 (103) Global new cases: 72,848 (297) Clearly there is little respite from this hugely destructive virus and increasingly reports from many quarters, both academic and political, are stating that it could be around for at least another two years. Problem is, no one knows but perhaps a quick roll back of the clock to the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1920 may provide a few “markers.” Firstly, the Spanish Flu a century ago, was the worst viral pandemic ever in world history. There ... read more

“I’m very much a believer that it’s action that matters much more so than, you know, the flurry of political promises and statements and slogans that are used during political discourse.” – Christine Lagarde The WHO dashboard as at 2.00am 26 April 2020 has the following statistics on their Covid-19 global dashboard (SA in brackets): Confirmed Cases: 2,774,135 (4,361) Deaths: 190,871 (86) New cases in last 24 hours: 93,109 (141) Bottom line, we are very far off being out of the woods! No vaccine or cure in sight although there are numerous biochemical companies globally who are working frantically to find the silver bullet that can hasten an end to this nightmare event in our modern times. Here in South Africa we have much to be proud of. The manner in which President Ramaphosa (CR) and ... read more

“Whoever originated the cliché that money is the root of all evil knew hardly anything about the nature of evil and very little about human beings.”- Eric Hoffer 21st April 2020 and the dashboard on the World Health Organisation website reveals the following as at 11am: Confirmed cases: 2,356,414 Deaths: 160,120 New cases: 72,397 This places the Covid-19 death rate way ahead of the other two coronavirus type outbreaks in recent years (MERS and SARS). But, still well short of the Asian Flu pandemic in the late 1950’s which wiped out 1.1 million people. It is simply too depressing and frightening to ponder as to what the final numbers for the current pandemic may reach. The backlash against China is building momentum as realisation dawns on the global community that they carry a massive responsibility for ... read more

“Just as despair can come to one only from other human beings, hope, too, can be given to one only by other human beings.” – Elie Wiesel There is no doubt social media has had a strangely perverse impact on this whole Covid-19 pandemic. There is an incessant and daily bombardment of information from all directions and it is not too dissimilar to a tsunami of epic proportions threatening to drown all in its path. We have access to this gargantuan flow of information but do we have the ability to process it all? I doubt it as all it seems to do is fulfil our desire to know, because it is in all of our natures to try and understand things especially when there is no thread of prior experience to tap into. So, what ... read more

“I don’t know “is how I reply to people with conspiracy theories about the coronavirus. This avoids going down their rabbit hole- Rupert Wolfe-Murray Day 11 of the lockdown in South Africa and Covid-19 continues its rampaging and catastrophic tornado across the globe. There is simply no way of stopping this virus in its tracks at this point in time and the only current effective defence mechanism is to try and slow the rate of spread amongst humans. Keep apart and stay at home. In the midst of the worst crisis to face mankind since the arrival of the HIV virus, there are a number of surreptitious theories starting to bubble to the surface. How did this virus originate? Why did it originate in China? Why has it not been that prevalent in neighbouring countries in ... read more

“Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.” – Vivian Greene (an author born in Rhodesia in 1904) An interesting quote to say the least and it somehow resonates with the current nightmare scenario confronting mankind. There is a monumental and frightening storm raging with no early signs of abating, but whilst we fervently wait and hope that Covid-19 will eventually blow out, we still need to figure out how to make the most of a frightening situation beyond our immediate control. Huge numbers of humans around the World, myself included, ponder daily on what will happen next as we watch in horror at the relentless onslaught of this virus which simply has not played by any rational rule book. Each day there are chilling ... read more
