Geo: -33.5474, 25.7269Addo Elephant National Park - known as one of the highlights of South Africa's Eastern Cape, and a must-see for tourists in this part of the country. Only a short drive away from Port Elizabeth, it should've been an easy journey, except for one problem - here in South Africa, they drive on the other side of the road. Oh, shit ...I imagine the parking attendants at the rental office were snickering at me, as I drove in a couple of circles around the parking lot, trying to get a feel for not only the other side of the road, but also the mirrored steering wheel, and shifting left handed. There was the odd hiccup, where I almost turned into the wrong lane, but we didn't crash today, so all turned out well!Addo is ... read more

Route 62 & Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa, 14-18 September On 14 September we arriving at Addo, we settle into our unit where we were staying for 1 night. The accommodation was large but run down unfortunately. It would be a good situation for a family who wanted to self cater, but for us it didn’t quite work. At least we had good heating because it was really cold at night. We booked ourselves in for a night game drive and a morning game drive. We made sure we put plenty of clothes on and the guide also provided a woollen poncho for each of us. We saw plenty of animals, however saw even more when we were driving around ourselves during the day. So the next day, we spent driving around Addo, which was ... read more

For our 5thday of the Cape to Addo tour, the major activity was the Addo Elephant National Park. This is a giant national park that was initially developed in 1931 to provide a sanctuary for the 11 remaining elephants in their natural habitat. The elephant population had dwindled in this area because of poachers and farmers (who were trying to protect their farms from being trampled by Elephants). Over the years since it has started, the national park has grown in size, now boasting that they are home to the “Big 7” – elephants, hippos, buffalo, lion, leopard, whale, and great white shark. The elephants have also thrived, and the population is now over 450. This is a major highlight of this trip, both in advertising and in reality. After enjoying breakfast and coffee with a ... read more

After leaving Shamwari, we made the short drive to Addo Elephant National Park. Addo is different to Shamwari as it is government ran. It is the third biggest national park in South Africa and was proclaimed as a national park in 1931, when there was only 16 elephants left. Now there are approximately 550 elephants, as well as a myriad of other types of wildlife. We checked into the Aardvark guesthouse, then after some lunch, we went down to the park to join a game drive. The game drive was pretty interesting. We saw quite a few zebra, antelopes and elephants. Other than that, our guide spotted a leopard tortoise and later we saw a jackal howling, which was definitely one of the most remarkable things I have seen on safari. The next day we decided ... read more

Flashback to Sunday night for a minute, even though I took it as an early night, there was a little bit of excitement. At around 8 o'clock, I heard a high pitched sream come from one of the other cabins. i could only find one slipper so I threw that on and ran towards the screaming. Come to find out, as Alex was packing her waterproofs, a giant spider came out and crawled across her hand and totally freaked her out. The worst part was that they couldn't find it in the room. The people who weren't afraid of spiders had to look around the room for it with everyone's flashlights. We finally found it behind the bed. I had heard Alex explain how big it was but I hadn't really believed her, once I saw ... read more

Geo: -33.5474, 25.7269We woke at 5.40am, freezing, to find that the electricity was still out. That meant packing in complete darkness. Rain was falling heavily outside. After breakfast we said goodbye (with little regret) to the Wildcoast, and set off towards Addo Elephant National Park.Lunch was at Georgetown, a pretty city built in 1820. It displayed a combination of Dutch and English architecture as well as a few very nice cathedrals. We took some time to walk around the city, exploring a cathedral and noting a loud protest going on at the Town Hall.We arrived at Addo around 2pm, our accomodation here being small forest cabins located in the Main Camp. The camp was a fenced off area, from the surrounding game park, nearby to a reception, shop, bar and resteraunt. There were also viewing areas ... read more

We arrived at Ado Elephant Park to book in to our campsite. We did so and got given a map and satellite coordinates of where we would be staying, giving us a hint that we would be camping in the middle of nowhere. Driving our little Ford Figo deeper and deeper in the bush we eventually arrived at a dead end 1hr in, we parked up and saw a little track that we walked for another 5 minutes before arriving to the campsite very secluded in the middle of the bush with a veranda looking over the ‘watering hole’. We were running around the place so excited that we were staying here. The toilet and shower had sticks around them with gaps in between the sticks to make you feel like you are showering out in ... read more

Leaving stormy Cape Town, we picked up a rental car to begin our journey around South Africa. No trip here would be complete without venturing to the wine-lands area of Stellenbosch, a gorgeous European town set among some of the most picturesque patchwork of vineyards and dramatic mountain ranges. We sampled the wines at Neethlingshof, a wine farm at the end of a gorgeous tree lined avenue, with rose gardens and delightful wines. Unfortunately we were short on time so could only sample one wine farm in this area. Driving through the beautiful Western Cape along the Garden Route was interesting in itself. Stunning scenery of golden beaches and forested mountains mingled with mansions and huge rudimentary townships that sprawl for miles along the main roads. We had lunch at a café while we watched people ... read more

The Wild Coast & The Garden Route Road Trip I returned just 2 days ago from a very different kind of road trip. Jesse and Elyse (my cousin and his girlfriend) arrived over 2 weeks ago, after climbing table mountain and two nights in Cape Town, the four of us were off on a road trip none of us will ever forget. We flew from Cape Town to Durban where we rented a car. I had order a mid-size four person, four large suitcase car, where in the pictures was something like a Jetta but when we got there we were greeted with something much smaller, a little 4 door, hatchback polo. Haha I absolutely thought it was funny, others werent as amused - the large ‘luxury’ car was out, instead we spent our time Eurotrip ... read more

Today we drove to Addo Elephant National Park about 1 hour north of Port Elizabeth, which was about an hour and a half from Jeffreys bay where we were staying. We did a 2 hour game drive which was really awesome. We saw Elephants, Black-backed Fox, Kudu, Elans, Black Rhinocerous, and ostriches. We even saw the full Ostrich mating ritual from the attention getting all the way through the entire act, which lasted about 2 minutes haha. I had found out that we could record on the TV at Jeffreys Bay and so I recorded the World Cup games and after the game drive we all headed back home to watch the games and bbq! We couldn’t go to the bar to watch the games because of someone’s actions at the bar last night haha. Since ... read more
