WAKE-UP CALL Andrew (our guide) arrives at 7:30am with my hot chocolate and Tim’s orange juice. Not quite sure what happened to all the hours between 10pm and 7:30am, because I closed my eyes at 10pm and suddenly its morning, what a great sleep, my first warm night in ages! But sadly, no animal noises were heard - is that because there were none around or because we were virtually unconscious… I tried to turn the heater back on, click, click, click, click but nothing. After the 20th click, Tim had his head under the pillow, so I took this as a hint to give up, time to get ready for breakfast and our morning game drive anyway. Hit the road by 6am, Chloe followed us down the drive then ran off to another warm room to sleep. The plan is to see Monkey Town just out of George, it opens at 8am and we should be there in time, spend a little time there then get to Addo early in the afternoon. Carmen the Garmin worked a treat and the roads were windy but nothing like the ones we were on to get to Oudtshoorn so we made it there in great time, in fact they were still setting up and opening. HAPPY MONKEYS GALORE They rescue all breeds of monkeys, lemurs etc that have been pets or in zoos, some smuggled from South America and there were a lot Lemurs from Madagascar. We were given a guide (you can’t walk through without ... read more

I didn't sleep too well last night, probably because I was in a big brass bed, in a bedroom, with three other rooms all to myself. It took me a while to get to sleep, even though I went to bed some three hours later than of recent. I'd also set the alarm for 07h30 so that I could get a quiet breakfast before we had to pack and leave by 09h30. However, I was awake at 05h30 and cold - longing for my sleeping bag, hard floor and tent!!! I didn't wait for the alarm. Instead I was up at 06h00 and pottering, opening the curtains and the windows. I walked down the road to take my breakfast and was led into a side room where the head-waitress insisted in stating the obvious with regard ... read more

Bill and I had a couple more outings while he was here. We came back in to PE on Tuesday and had the braai with my roomies. Wednesday, my grade 9s at school had testing so I had a couple extra classes open, so Bill and I were able to go to Addo for the afternoon. I figured it was a national park and only 40 minutes from PE, so he had to go. The day that the girls and I went, about a month and a half ago, was very hot and drove all of the elephants to the waterholes. Wednesday was a little cloudy and not nearly as warm so they weren’t out in droves like before. But we still got to see quite a few elephants and a few other animals as well. ... read more

After a long drive we made it to Addo Elephant Park. This has been the highlight of the trip so far for me, I an never see too many elephants! We are staying in the park in a cabin which turned out to be much posher than we were expecting. It has a balcony over looking the park and the surrounding bushes are constantly filled with tweeting birds (#chirp - Tim says this is a joke for those in the know!) We started off by going on our own game drive, within seconds we'd seen a Buffalo and then several elephants. There are around 400 elephants in the park so we expected to see a few but it was good to see so many, and so close to the road. Game spotting is quite tricky here ... read more

Note - more pictures to be added, wireless is too slow here so check back soon! ************************************************* After our fill of surf and sun in J'bay Ryan and I headed to Addo Park via Port Elizabeth. We decided after all of our backpacking we wanted to stay in something morel luxurious. I had booked a game drive and accommodation package through Woodall Lodge just outside Addo. Although I knew it would be nice, I really had no idea what a 5 star place would be like here as it seems star ratings vary across the world. We pulled up to the iron gates, were let in a greeted with cold towels and had a beverage overlooking there pond on the deck while we were briefed on our 2 days ahead. So far... excellent. Next up we ... read more

So having landed in Port Elizabeth I had to wait awhile for Paula to turn up on the airport shuttle. Once she arrived we walked to the car hire centre and picked up our lovely white Opel Corsa... The road trip began minus a true road map but lonely planet and lots of tourist information maps in hand and we headed out for Addo. We checked into our hostel at Addo and after hunting out some food we chilled out and had an early night in anticipation of getting up early and heading into Addo Elephant Park the next day. Wednesday morning and we were rolling through the gates of Addo at 7.30am. We paid up and checked in and set off in hunt of the wildlife. We were fortunate to come across a warthog within ... read more

Warning - this blog will contain loads of animal photos Wed 7 Oct Bloody typical, the day I have to travel is gorgeously sunny and hot. Anyhow, managed to take in the rays all morning before Ady gave me a lovely lunch and I got a lift up to the bus I decided to use Intercape this time and boy was it a cut above the Baz bus. They had wide reclining seats and huge windows, with a conductress on board to get you checked in and also to bring round drinks. I was lucky and got the front seat on the upper deck, so had a grand view. And cheaper. The trip from Plett to PE was 3.5 hours but it was an interesting drive. We stopped off briefly at Jeffreys Bay and I saw ... read more

On August 27th, we took Tiffany for her first game drive in Addo National Park. This national park is famous for the number of elephants that you can see there. We found this watering hole just in time to see a large herd of elephants walk up to drink. There were many females with a number of young babies with them. I later learned in a book that because the elephant gestation period is so long that a mom elephant can have more than one baby with her at a time. It was so cool to watch them drink. The really interesting part was seeing the babies nurse. The babies drink from the mother breast, or whatever they are called, that are located by the front armpit/leg area. I was so surprised to see that they ... read more

Hey guys, Well after flying down the coast on SA's N2 Hwy which is a really nice road we arrived at Port Elizabeth. We were supposed to stay in Gramstown in a hostel that was actually an old prison but they were booked when we got there so we just pushed through to PE. Our decision to keep going was rewarded with one of the nicest hostels we've stayed in, much nicer than some old prison what the hell were we thinking;) So our main adventure was Addo Elephant Nat'l Park which allowed us again to use the Roc-a-rolla as our safari vehicle. After almost an hour of driving we were going to rename the park Warthog National Park because all we saw were "Hakuna Matata's" as I've decided to call them and always sing the ... read more
