‘I DON’T BELIEVE IT’ The tyre’s gone down. *&*&(^(% It’s super early as I had to drop the other one at work and I’d hoped to have a swim while I waited for the tyre place to open but bad planning, it ain’t open. Instead, I wander around the 2km running track, in normal clothes and a handbag, trying to look purposeful and avoid drawing attention to myself, I’m not sure I’m doing that well. My suspicions are confirmed when I manage to tread on a branch that springs forward, whacking me in the leg, making me yelp loudly and producing a limp and a bloodied leg that not only secures the attention of the few others about at 7.30am but brings a new low to my definition of myself as clumsy. I can’t now actually ... read more

Back in the Seychelles and a week of the Easter holidays left for the other one and all good intentions of exploring the island and treating ourselves to a little luxury (eating somewhere other than The Pirate Arms) didn’t happen on account of a rubbish car that got another puncture with still no clear reason why, chasing our lost bag, a grumpy other one who was finding it hard to adjust to being back and a backlog (that I’m still clearing!) of Social Seychelles, blog and hotel reviews. Life sucks.... read more

The bag arrived eventually. It landed in Joburg the day after we left, (handy that and no explanation given) and landed in Seychelles a week later after my flobber feet in Praslin we did, by which time we’d forgotten what was in it. It was a nice surprise then when we opened it and Mary Poppins like, the Calitzdorp Port, throws, candle holders and small rugs (all courtesy of sheet street) came popping out, along with the dirty pants. I amused myself for a few hours (with the new stuff not my pants) and the house is now a lot cosier though this brought its own dangers. Reclining on our new living room day bed (aka a single bed nabbed from the upstairs bedroom) I managed to smash the tea light holders that we’d had for ... read more

Leaving behind our cold water woes, we headed for Beau Vallon for an exciting evening in our Seychelles calendar - an invite to someone's house, where I'd been the person invited. Nothing to do with school whatsoever - released from the dependent shackles oh yes! Except, the other one was driving and it was dark and raining, and he likes moaning about it, it worryingly reaching a peak when behind the wheel he complained that he couldn't see. Comforting. It got worse. Turning right into the road (well driveway) we needed to take, with the darkness and rain and steep hill, the car struggled to get up. Deciding to reverse, we started back to find another car had turned in behind us. Trying to steer to allow them to sidle past, the other one yelped at ... read more

Listening to the other one's jibber jabber, him having called me with nothing much to say (I expect just a thinly veiled excuse to check I'd fed and watered myself like some forlorn Tamogochi, stuck as I am to the internet these days) I felt a small splash on my shoulder. Then a few more. Seeing as last I knew our house had a roof this was a little troubling. In what seems to be perfectly reasonable 21st century behaviour, I secured the safety of my laptop ok first. Then I set out like truffle hunting pig to check out the problem. My quest took me to the loft upstairs where I identified what I think is technically called a drip drip sound. Time waiting for no man, I despatched myself next door to the landlord's ... read more

I like to try and keep up to date with the digital world out there but it's difficult in a place where spotting an i-phone is as likely as meeting a Giant Panda at the bus stop with Twitter, his blue fin tuna friend. Reading as I do a few sites like mashable, I found an article about developing social networks. Exploring further with time to spare and no-one to speak to (intro violins...), I suddenly found myself setting up a dummy site called Social Seychelles. I didn't even struggle over the name (this being a very onerous and important task I feel - I mean while researching places to stay in South Africa I came across two hotels called Xanadu and the Blue Oyster - I mean stay there, really? Ok, maybe it's just me). ... read more

Last year, perhaps by twist of fate, we decided to take advantage of the theatre wonderland on our London doorstep and do more than the once a year trip that we seemed to make to go see some 'culcha'. So we saw Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellen in Waiting for Godot, Romeo and Juliet at the Globe, The Cherry Orchard at the Old Vic, Madame Butterfly at the English National Opera, Eonnagatta with Sylvie Guillem and the American Ballet Theatre doing Le Corsaire at Sadlers Wells, and for good measure The Killers and 2 Many DJ's at the O2 and Brixton Academy respectively. Here, the only bit of culture we've come across was the recent school production of Frankenstein. Enthusiastic kids, fake blood, cheesy Rocky Horror style numbers, hands that seem to move on their own, ... read more

I thought they were ringing as they'd heard how wonderful Social Seychelles was and wanted to hire me on the spot. Instead, the man appeared to be telling me that they'd overbooked our flight and would we mind changing? Thankfully, the swap would be to an earlier rather than later flight but would entail a night in Johannesberg. Hmmm. I enquired as to the hotel we'd get to stay in (after all if the hotel is posh enough you could be anywhere right?). They told me the hotel and I looked it up on the internet and it looked v nice with a pool so I said yes Air Seychelles that would be lovely, I'll just check with my husband first. The other one asked, is it a nice hotel? I said yes. Job done. paradisepromised.wordpress.com ... read more

We fuelled up at breakfast opposite the drive through reception and Dominic, the first of the Manchester United fans we were to meet, passionately recounted the time he'd seen the team play Soweto team the Kaizer Chiefs (the band was indeed named after them). He dropped us at East Rand Mall, a magnificent testament to the shopping religion. The metaphorical whistle blown, we were off, not even Nani could catch us as like rats on speed we dove into shops looking for trainers, underwear, shorts and tops. Focused and determined, our three hours there was a tribute to our resolve, nearly all the major purchases were made, the spend was looking good and we'd not even been sidetracked into buying anything too frivolous, say like a jacket. Surprisingly, there weren't that many stores that I recognised, ... read more

Having added our purchases to our luggage, we were ready and packed for the next leg of our trip. Another guy who'd also had the pleasure of having his flight changed, joined us for the ride to the airport and we got chatting. The other one started digging me in my ribs and turning, I realised he had a Social Seychelles card in his hand. I took it clumsily, holding it sweatily in my hand. You see I am perhaps the worse MBA graduate in the world as I get shy when it comes to promoting myself or my achievements and 'networking'. Money well spent that. The other one's stare boring a hole in my neck, forced me into action and with all the sophistication of a referee getting out his yellow card, I laid it on ... read more
