The day didn't get off to a great start when we realised that there was no water available. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come in lesser developed African countries but unfortunately it almost certainly is. We took a few hours to drive to Sossusvlei, a salt pan in the central Namib Desert. It's famous for the huge, red sand dunes that surround it and stretch for miles and miles. After the heat of the day started to subside at about 4pm we went for a guided walk in the desert. This was absolutely amazing not just for where we went but also for what the guide was telling us. He was incredibly good, walking on 80C sand in bare feet and at a pace that would challenge a cheetah. The ecosystem here has ... read more

I was going to write a light hearted report of this tough holiday, sunshine, good food and swimming pools etc. But, that is as nothing to the night we had at the end of our short trip to Etosha Game Park. The game viewing had been good except for the sitings of elephants and other large game. On arrival I went off to cool down inthe swimming pool with the others, except for Matthew, who went off to the waterhole. He came back with a wonderful experience of seeing a rhino. So, we all trooped over at about 6 in the eveining, hoping to see something, but not expectant. There were lots of deer and some giraffes going down to drink and after a time some people gave up and went off to eat and watch ... read more

Hey everyone! Well, I tried to send pictures today and I was so excited for all of you to see what I have been doing over the past 2 weeks but unfortunately the internet cafe with a USB port would not open this site so I couldn't do it...so I was unsuccessful...so i just spent a lot of time running back and forth between 2 internet cafe's because I thought it was just the connection...phew! Anyway, I'll just get started...the past week and a half has been really good! We were in Windhoek, the capital, for training until last Tuesday. My luggage came in last Sunday, and I was pleasantly surprised that nothing had been stolen considering Johannesburg is the World's Capital for luggage theft! It was funny, only the locks on the bags were taken ... read more

There was another overlanding group in the campsite. They had a mosquito net on top of their truck where a couple spent the night. So there we are tucking into our cereal and toast when they begin the morning's entertainment. We were all staring, he didn't care and she didn't know. We gave them a quick round of applause when they eventually clambered down off the roof. After that excitement we were soon back on the truck for a 4 hour drive, this time (thankfully) to our own campsite. It was good getting to the campsite reasonably early because this gave us our first chance to just sit around and relax. They even had a swimming pool which we went in a few times. It's hard to describe just how hot it is here, but a ... read more

Tuesday was my Adrenaline Day & we were collected from camp & taken to the Gorge where the four activities were set up. After the obligatory paperwork the first activity was abseiling 54 metres down the gorge rockface. Was pretty nervous about the height & probably waited in line too long, but got down ok with the adrenaline pumping. Next was the flying fox where I opted to go in the seated position rather than face down like Superman. Just couldn't face looking straight down into the gorge & figured I could hold onto the harness if anything were to go wrong. Got all geared up & on the ramp for rapting (forwards abseiling), but couldn't bring myself to go down face first. The guys were really great & so regeared me so I could do ... read more

Hi folks. Well we've been through Namibia now and have landed in Cape town safe and well if a little exhausted. Namibia was, without doubt, the hottest place either of us have ventured into. We began with two days at Etosha national park where we saw loads of lions, rhino, giraffe, elephants etc. For those looking for a short safari break I'd definitely recommend it as the main campsite / resort Okaukuejo has a watering hole right next to it where, throughout the day, you can see loads of animals constantly streaming in for a drink. Our final game drive on tour gave us the sight of a leopard stalking and chasing a springbok although we didn't get to see the kill as it disappeared into the trees. We then headed to Spitzkoppe, a kind of ... read more

No posting for some time because we have been out in the bush - at a camp site by Poppa Falls. When you go camping in the UK, what is the first thing you check? The loos - yes!! And usually they are fairly basic if not awful. Well - go to Ngepi Safari Lodge and the experience is wonderful!! The people are friendly, settle you into your area and then let you explore. We were given site number 6, which was big enough for three tents, but it was ours for the duration. It was on the banks of the Kavango River, a very beautiful view from the tent. Each area has a set of loos and showers, we were next to the most amusing provisions - the Royal Flush. A throne - literally a ... read more

Well, we made it! After a 15 hour and 10 minute flight to Johannesburg (the pilot told us it is one of the longest non-stop flights in the world) and a short jump to Namibia...we are here. The kicker is that none of our luggage made it so we are all still wearing the same clothes from when we left. They keep telling us that hopefully tomorrow. (I am very thankful to my mom for telling me to bring this extra pair of running pants, t-shirts and underwear!) Anyway, the other volunteers are really nice, and it is very hot here! We started our training today and teaching sounds very exhausting but very rewarding. We are going to be going to a host family next week to do some on-hands experience in a school so that ... read more

Version Francaise un peu plus bas Hi there, Hope this blog entry finds everyone doing great. Well, here we are, a week away from Xmas and I am still in Africa. The adventure continues and Africa has definitely gotten me hooked and wanting more. Just flew in last night from Namibia, I am back in Johannesburg at my favorite hotel for a couple days of rest and prep before flying to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) tomorrow afternoon. My brother Laurent will be back in LA by Wednesday and I know he too will miss the amazing sights and sense of freedom he discovered in Namibia. I miss him already, we laughed and goofed a lot as you can see on the pictiures! (make sure you scroll down to see all the pics - there are about 40+ ... read more

We now drive west and across the "Gravel plains", and as if in the dessert, I see water just ahead, many times. Oh, well, in reality I kept seing mirages, tricks of the desert. I think of loved ones during the boring drive. Some who'd love this experience, the many who will be content to just hear about it, and the others who will still think "Is she crazy?" Crazy is to think this trip isn't worth it. 116 from Uis we can see the Atlantic Ocean and finally feel some cooler air. We are now at the SKELETON COAST, on Henties Bay. The arrival at CAPE FUR SEAL colony at CAPE CROSS, was announced by the strong, pungent , almost unbearable smell of the thousands of seals. They were noisy too, and can number as ... read more
