Africa » Namibia » Cheetah Park January 16th 2007

After a not-very-good night's sleep in the cave we slept for most of the journey in the truck today, arriving just after lunchtime at the Cheetah Park. This is a refuge for cheetahs run by a real African character - an ex-hunter called Mario. A literal poacher turned gamekeeper due to him killing a cheetah who was causing havoc on a farm, later to find out that that cheetah was a new mother of 2 cubs who they took in and the refuge farm has grown ever since. We were basically forced to rehydrate our bodies with a couple of beers before visiting 3 tame cheetahs who live at his house. Mario is bald with a head covered in cheetah-inflicted scars, so we weren't exactly sure how tame he meant. We took turns to stroke ... read more

We travelled from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay a couple of days ago to try out some of the activities. Befiore goign we checked with the owner of the Lodge about public transport. "Oh you just walk to the end of hte road and hitch a lift." So we did!! A lovely gentleman picked us up in his white pick-up, he was going fishing up the coast beyond Walvis Bay. As we travelled we nattered to him and he asked us if we would like to go with him, it would mean going into the National Park area with a permit and then driving in the dunes. 4x4 driving for free along the coastal dunes, a trip that the professionals were charging N$1,000 dollars for? Well, of course we went! He was so kind he arranged a ... read more

Had baked beans on toast for breakfast on Tuesday, then drove to Etosha National Park. Stopped for a few hours at a campground & used their swimming pool during the heat of the day. Checked out their fort & water hole, which was devoid of any animal life, before departing on a game drive. I jumped in the truck cab with Romy driving, which was super fun & luckily there wasn't much wild life around because we spent most of the time gasbagging. Drove onto our campground in Halali, set up tents, had a swim & a beer before dinner which was pasta with olives & anchovies. Was supposed to take a walk down to the watering hole to check out the animals, but was shattered from all the heat so crashed out. Up at the ... read more

After the relative luxury of 3 nights in a hostel we were back to earth with a bang: camping with no facilities, including water. Our first stop was the Cape Cross Seal Colony. Thousands of seals, a lot of them babies and some of them being seagull/jackal-eaten carcasses. The smell was just unbelievable. According to a plaque, Cape Cross was discovered by a Portugese who erected a cross where he landed. The cross fell to pieces and the remains are now in Berlin, but 100 years ago a replica was put up. Subsequently to this, about 10 years ago a rather pedantic historian concluded that the replica had been put up 10m away from the correct location. So now there are 2 identical replica monuments 10m apart. We stopped off in a town to buy ... read more

Following on from yesterday's fun in the sand dunes on quad bikes, this morning we tried out sandboarding. This involves climbing a steep sand dune, which is completely exhausting, and then flying down various steep and smooth slopes head first on a 4ft by 2ft sheet of wood - also known as the 'hi-tech speed machine'. With the underside waxed for maximum speed. It's not for the faint-hearted because even the 'easy' slopes are steep and you reach speeds of about 45kph. But after a few goes (the only limit was how many times we could climb the dunes in the desert sun) the guides showed us their favourite slope. One of them sped down and waited at the bottom with a speed gun. We both recorded pretty impressive speeds that only a couple of people ... read more

I take back all the negative comments I have made about quad bikes. We had such fun last night on the dunes. There were just the three of us in the group, we were lad by a very gentle guide. The instruction to not think of the steering as like a bike was difficult to adopt at first, so I likened it in my mind to pushing a supermarket trolley that wasn't steering true. The revving was similar to my 2CV - pied au planchet if you wan tto get up the hills!! We started by gently following the guide up and down gentle slopes, concentration was the important word at this point. As we progressd he took us up steeper slopes which was not too traumatic, then we started going down the steep sides of ... read more

The day began late with our worst hangovers in a while - well since the New Year. Luckily we'd missed the free breakfast of cereal and toast so were able to go and find bacon and eggs instead. Internet access in Africa is much worse than Latin America's - significantly slower, dearer and rarer. So we took advantage of being in a relatively developed town and spent 3 hours on the computer writing our blog and planning the rest of our trip. The hangover was still there at lunch time so we had a cheeseburger to try and shift it. The hangover was soon a distant memory though, but that was nothing to do with the greasy food...in the afternoon we went quadbiking in the sand dunes. This was probably the most fun we've had so ... read more

Well, today is my last day in Windhoek and we are officially done with training! Yay! It was very helpful but very exhausting! Yesterday was a good day...we had a speaker in the morning on "teaching with rubbish" which was cool because I now know how to play checkers and bingo with cardboards and bottle caps! Then we broke up in groups and my group went to an HIV/AIDS clinic and got to see the process of a drop-in client. Very interesting! Tomorrow we are all going our separate ways throughout Namibia and this is where the real challenge begins... I met with our field director today and she gave me more info. about my school and principal. She said the prinicipal is very energetic and very excited to have a World Teach volunteer teacher at ... read more

Today's travel has been very 'upmarket' - we caught an Intercape bus - one with an upstairs. Definitely more luxurious than the white mini buses!! We are in Swakopmund. A lovely seaside town which has maintained many of its German characteristics, including the food. I have to admit now, that I have not lost any weight on this holiday, in fact the opposite is probably true! Tonight we are quad biking on the dunes at sunset. Adrenalin rushes seem to be the thing at the moment, and please accept that this will be exciting for me - another first! We have just paddled in the Atlantic, so Ian and Renske have crossed over completely from one side of Africa to the other. This will be tonight's toast I suspect. We are considering the sand boarding - ... read more

An astonishingly early start today with breakfast at 5:30am. We're camping and it doesn't get light until 5:45am so it's a pretty stupid time to have breakfast but there you go, we're not in charge. We drove firstly to an amazing little town, well collection of buildings, called Solitaire. Despite only having one shop, the place is famous for its apple crumble. And quite right too - it was the most delicious apple crumble ever tasted. On a chalkboard they display the world news because people around here don't have much contact with the outside world. We're clearly not missing much whilst we're in the Namibian desert because the current summary of world events is 'D Beckham to play in the US. Temperature 42C'. At lunchtime we arrived in Swakopmund, Namibia's holiday destination. It's a small ... read more
