Today was another long drive, over the normal 4 hours! The road from Luderitz was mainly tarred so it was an easy drive. We stopped on the way to see some Desert Horses; these have evolved to go without water for up to 4 days, far longer than Tim can go without a cold Windhoek lager on this trip! We arrived in time for lunch at Canon Lodge, one of the most attractive places we've stayed, it's lots of bungalows built around huge rock boulders that sometimes are partially built into the rooms. We spent a lot of time watching the Rock Hyrax (also known as dassies) which are related to Elephants but look like fat Guinea Pigs. After a trip through the Valley of Salads (their name for a salad buffet!) we went to bed. ... read more

Thur 12 We drove to fish river canyon - the second biggest canyon in the world. We wandered along the edge and then back for sunset- but it wasn't that spectacular. The canyon itself was huge but I seem to remember the Grandcanyon being a nice colour. (I've been so spoilt that I'm not wowed by these sights anymore!) ... read more

Round The World 2007 Ok, I was going to go through and put in each town but it will take too long, as well as FRC we went to Etosha, Spitzkoppe, Swakopmund and Windhoek. Namibia was fantastic, not sure without my passport when we arrived and when we left. It is definately home to some of my best memories, i learnt to sandboard down a dune, climbed one at 5am to watch the sun rise and jumped out of a plane! and that was all in 2 days! Sandboarding was a lot of fun and i cant wait to try snow boarding either this trip if we have time or another time, i went down the dune on a body board too and reached a speed of 57kph I think, cant remember. Skydiving is the single ... read more

Fish River Canyon May 9th 2006 It is only day four and yet I am becoming familiar with the rhythm of the trip; tents down 6 AM, breakfast 6:15 AM, on the road by 6:45 AM. Gone is my old morning routine; wake up 5:45 AM, walk dogs 6:30 AM, at work by 7 AM, get coffee and read emails 7:15 AM., morning meetings, etc. I don’t miss it. This new pattern feels good, comfortable. Climbing in and out of the big truck is becoming less difficult and hopefully a little more graceful. Once on the road I settle into the firm, worn, green canvas covered seats. I stare out the window, a long seemingly endless red dirt road ahead of us. There are grey mountains in the distance. Broad, flat plains in the foreground awash ... read more

This is one of those places that give you an instant jaw-dropping effect. WeiL went: "I am not sure I can handle this" - the moment we arrived. Before us is a stupendous gorge with a 'river' snaking within it, all lit up in bright golden colour as the sun was slowly setting beyond the horizon. I thought I was staring at a gold field. It looked more like places you see in dreams. I bet I would forget about the whole experience (like I do all the time) by the time I wake up tomorrow unless I have pictures to remind myself that this is real. Thanks mom for lending me her camera! The second largest canyon in the world (I believe the Grand Canyon is the largest by size) has its very own ... read more

Einerseits sind d ... read more

There was another overlanding group in the campsite. They had a mosquito net on top of their truck where a couple spent the night. So there we are tucking into our cereal and toast when they begin the morning's entertainment. We were all staring, he didn't care and she didn't know. We gave them a quick round of applause when they eventually clambered down off the roof. After that excitement we were soon back on the truck for a 4 hour drive, this time (thankfully) to our own campsite. It was good getting to the campsite reasonably early because this gave us our first chance to just sit around and relax. They even had a swimming pool which we went in a few times. It's hard to describe just how hot it is here, but a ... read more

On one of the roads towards the Fish River Canyon we saw something standing in the road in front of us. We thought, through the heat haze that it was maybe a donkey - but it turned out to be an oryx - just in the middle of nowhere! From the car we also saw lots of ostrich and springbok. We got some petrol at the Canon Road House, and then drove to the canyon, paying our entrance fee at the gate. The gravel road to the canyon’s main view point was pretty rough and ropey. But the canyon…..it is huge. We only saw one small part of it. It was beautiful. If you have seen the Grand Canyon in USA it is not as red nor as wide (at the main view point where we ... read more

A welcome relative lie in with breakfast at 8am. After a surprisingly breezy and chilly trip despite the sun, in an open truck from the campsite, we spent a leisurely morning canoeing down the Orange river, with the current, back to our campsite. There was some interesting birdlife including the African darter with its snake like neck. In the afternoon we headed to the Namibian border crossing and encountered lots of form filling and slow queues as we sheltered from the hot sun. We travelled dry dusty roads to the Fish River Canyon which claims to be second only to the Grand Canyon in size. It was certainly impressive as the sun set over it. We were amused by an old boy who explained his extensive scratches to a shocked oriental girl as being caused ... read more
