Into Africa We set of early next day for a long drive down from Windhoek to Voglstrauskluftlodge - yes we are in Namibia and not Bavaria! Namibia really is quite empty and desolate, but beautiful in it's own way. As we journey south, you can see the landscape become much more arid and the beginnings of canyons starting to form. As a treat, our driver, who hasn't driven this part of Namibia before, suggests that we visit the Quivver Tree forest, which sounds like a treat. We do a 17km detour down a track road to buy some tickets from some not-very-helpful farmers and drive off on our way. After we've driven back the 17km, it become apparent that we should have perhaps seen some Quivver trees by now. This is a lesson in 'assume' makes ... read more

Day 8 (Tuesday 28-Apr-09, JRJ) Awake 6am for breakfast. Packed everything away and then went on a Canoe trip down the Orange River. There were about 10 canoes, each with 2 people in. Me and Nat shared, but guess who did most of the paddling? She was, however, determined that this 2 and half hour exercise would eliminate the bingo wings for the wedding, so a token effort was made. The trip down the river was beautiful and lots of fun. We saw many different birds such as herons, cormorants and the odd hawk. We even went down a few rapids on the way, both in the canoe and out. This was also the first test of our new waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof camera. It still works! The trip ended around midday and lunch was ready for ... read more

Hi everyone Sorry for the delay in updating getting internet access has been a bit tricky - we have only come back into civilization yesterday so here's what we have been up to .... We met the group in Cape Town there are 20 of us on the trip and a real mixture of nationailities - Icelandic, Dutch, Swedish, Danish and New Zealand. The ages range right from 18 up to 60 and everyone is really nice. We are travelling round on a truck (Helena) which has a few issues in starting and we have to bump start most of the time but she is pretty awesome. Every night we put up tents to stay in and we have Jimmy who is our group leader along with Alex and then Dougie our camp chef from Zimbabwe ... read more

Our aim today was to get somewhere within easy striking distance of the South African border. The scenery continued to be as beautiful as we have come to expect here in Namibia and, at Seerheim we branched due south along the superb dirt road where, running on the line next to the road, we met the first train we have seen moving in Africa - a short goods train with a dirty old diesel engine at the front. Then we entered the Fish River Canyon Nat Park. It was, by now, a rather bland rocky surface everywhere and I was getting worried fuel wise as I had made the mistake of not filling up at the last pump we passed, and then not finding the next one! However, at the park gate there was a pump ... read more

Namib Naukluft Park The park is the fourth largest nature conservation area in the world. It lies within the namib desert which stretches from the southern border of South Africa up into Angola. Contained with in it is the striking Sossuviei which is a dusty clay pan overlooked by hundreds of vast sand dunes. Although they move they all have a distinct number, one of the most famous dunes being 'dune 45'. We took a tour around one of the Sossuviei to see the many plants and animals that can survive in the dry environment. The tour was led by a japaneze woman that had left the commercial world of Japan to conduct a very basic exsistance as she believed that where ever peole live they all do the same three basic things every day......she is ... read more

Africa's answer to the Grand Canyon. It's either the second or third largest canyon in the world (depending on what source you look at, and probably how it's measured). Unfortunately you can't do day hikes into the Canyon, but there is a 5 day trek that we might have to do in the future. This time we'll have to settle for the spectacular views, darn...... read more

Homeward bound This was the homeward leg of the trip. We had planned a couple of relaxing nights in Hermanus to try and spot some whales before flying home, so that left us with 2 nights and 3 days to cover about 1000km and see some sights. From the Desert Homestead we ventured early onto more gravel roads. We were getting quite used to these now and most of them went through amazing rocky landscapes. The plan was to head Keetmanshoop for a night and then on to Fish River Canyon for a few hours before driving to the South Africa border. Keetmanshoop isn't really famous for anything, but it is the biggest place on the way back to South Africa. One attraction is a quiver tree forest, which are really beautiful trees that only grow ... read more

Phew...where to begin!! So I have not sat down to do e-mail since before the break...I am apologizing in advance...this is going to be long with lots of pictures.... Ok, so once we were off from school, I went to Windhoek with some of my friends and just caught up with all of them...(I then realized I wasn't the only one who went into hibernation this past term...I think it definitely had something to do with the winter months and it getting dark earlier). Then my one friend, Kate and I drove all the way to the south to do some hiking and camping at this place called Fish River Canyon. Now before I go on about FRC, my friend Kate really know how to camp. She calls it "car camping" because everything you would ever ... read more

I am on honeymoon! No, I have not got married that was Laura. I just decided to tag along! We have been touring Namibia which has been fun. We started in the capital Windhoek before heading north to Waterberg Plateau. After that it was off to Etosha for some wildlife spotting. We saw lots and of animals including lions and rhino. We took note of Tanja's advice and stayed in the car at all times hence the fact that none of us got eaten! Our next big wildlife spotting was at Cape Cross where we saw 200,000 seals! It was amazing to see so many together but they were very smelly! After that we seemed to focus on sand and went to see the tallest dunes in the world at sossusvlei. Laura climbed up and ran ... read more
