Entered Namiba yesterday after having a great few days in south africa, whale wathching was great saw southern right whales, dolphins and lots of seals, Cape town is a great place and would definitely go back. Met up with the group I am now travelling with, a mixture of people from America, New Zealand, Austrailia and the UK think we are going to have good fun! Everyone has different jobs to do, mine is climbing onto the roof of the truck to unload and then load the sleeping mats, a good job compared to some other peoples!! On the first day we headed to the Cape of Good Hope, scenery was unbelievable and have already seen lots of animals, a long day of driving yesterday, the last day on tarmaced roads! is going to be bumpy ... read more

For more amusement on the truck, we start a game of killer. We have 22 names, 22 locations and 22 objects in 3 hats, everyone picks one and that is their contract. The object of the game is to get that person, in that location, with that object e.g. I had to kill Nik by a fire with a frying pan. It spurs everyone into a frenzy and suddenly no-one is helpful any more, if someone offers you a beer or asks you to hold something for them, usually it leads to people running away screaming. Great fun though. I make Nik scream when I run at her by the fire with a huge truck frying pan, then I take over her contract. Unfortunately I don't manage to kill Katie in the bar with a hair ... read more

June 15th It was the normal morning routine for us before we left with me on dish duty, Kelly and David had let me off of cleaning up the night before so I could watch the rest of the Italy versus Paraguay match. So after the dishes were scrubbed and the tents were packed away we jumped in the truck and headed towards South Africa. The terrain had changed after the first hour and it wasn’t the most interesting or intriguing of drives. The sleep was contagious as the land passed us by, mostly flat plains without much wildlife to see. After a few hours went by we had reached a small one horse town to stretch our legs and empty out bladders. I stayed on as truck security and had my lunch while the rest ... read more

Last night, David, the French Guide and myself, sat beside the Orange River until 00h30 talking (and drinking beer). Fortunately, we didn't need to be up until 08h00, but even so, most of us were up by 07h30. Although my phone had developed a fault and none of the buttons worked, I managed to charge it so that I'd at least know what time it was. After a late breakfast, David disappeared back to the border in the hope that his work permit had finally come through and, in the meantime, the French Guide and myself, patrolled the camp site trying to take photographs of the birds. We were trying to capture a picture of the Orange River White Eye but these little yellow birds seemed to have too much energy and didn't stay in one ... read more

Last night we were camping again. It was really good to be back in the tent and, as we'd camped on sand in the Cedarberg mountains, the night was cool, but not cold. At 05h30, Maxwell walked through camp waking everyone up. There were moans of disapproval from the French camp but generally, everyone was awake. Up and out for a shower and then back to the tent to start packing the bags. By this time, there was usually enough light to make do without the torch however, here, in the mountains, it was still dark. The sun had not managed to get above the peaks. Once packed, I lowered the tent and went off for breakfast. This was the first morning camping for all and our guide was intending to teach the others how to ... read more

We started our day with a nice breakfast (the choice is great at the lodge). We walked around the lodges, climbed the boulders. The landscape is absolutely incredible. We walked around and I came across a 'living plant', they are very small and difficult to see as they look like little stones. We also followed a small dry river bed and imagined what it would be like after the rains. Although we were visiting in the rainy season we had not seen much rain, just a couple of rain clouds. We spent a few hours at the pool by ourselves. The pool is very cold and salt water, so it was quite relaxing. From the pool you can admire the landscape. We had lunch and then did some more relaxing. We visited the tourist shop and ... read more

Drive: 370km south to Canon Lodge (D324 road) After breakfast we packed our bags, said our goodbyes to the reception in the Zebra Lodge, Kalahari, and set off in our car. h3Note!/h3 I used my credit card on 5 occasions in Namibia and South Africa, and the following month I had a fraudulent transaction in Austria appear on my card, so the credit card details must have been stolen from one of these locations although I’d hate to imagine it. If you can, and if you are in a country that lets you, you can get a Thomas Cook ‘credit card’ which you load with foreign currency and it works just like a debit card and it has a VISA sign and has a pin number. Slightly better protection on your hols. I think it’s taught ... read more

Into Namibia Tuesday 2th February Today we are going to cross the border into Namibia. The border between South Africa and Namibia is supposed to be one of the more difficult ones to cross and there are concerns that our tour leader, Ruth, and the crew may have difficulties with their work permits. In the morning a couple of the group go canoeing along the Orange Riverwhile the rest of us go for a swim. We head off to the border at about midday, Ruth having instructed us to dress conservatively for the border crossing. As it turns out everything goes smoothly and we are through the border within an hour. Fish River Canyon The first part of Namibia we drive through is very dry and very hot. Even when we open the windows of the ... read more

Day 19 - Rundu Up at 5am this morning for the long drive to Namibia. Uneventful drive and border crossing at Mohembo (country #43). We continued on to Rundu, our base for the night. It’s always a surprise when crossing borders how much the scenery and environment changes, particularly African borders which largely derive from random imperial edicts. Namibia is hot, hot, hot though (well into the 30s) and really dry, a welcome change after the past week. After stopping for money and supplies in Rundu, we went to the Sarasungu campsite just outside town, located on the Okavanga River, which is the border with Angola. Exhausted from the long, hot journey I had a few beers to cool down, a shower and an unusually disappointing meal (small piece of overcooked chicken, and boiled potato - ... read more

You Can Take The Urbanite Out Of The City... This is it - our first real day of doing proper stuff on the trip and we're both really excited. It's really cold in the mornings, as in Britain winter cold-morning cold. Bracing stuff. The gear that we've thoughtfully acquired for our quest is donned and we mount up on the 4x4 with our guide and driver for our foray into Fish-out-of-water River Canyon (know to the locals as just Fish River Canyon). It's a bumpy ride, and not much of a road. We get our first glimpses of springbok and ostrich and as we round the first bend and stop for some shots before descending into the canyon proper we can see some kudu off in the distance, tromping back from a quick drink at the ... read more
