"Breakfast at 8 leave at 9" The daily briefing complete, we leave the river lodge. Last night had ended with Jaeger shots, Jenga and a new way of drinking tequila that Charley showed us (with orange segments sprinkled with cinnamon). S today I'm feeling a little slow. Pam missed the late night activities having gone straight to bed after the truck ride. Today we are headed towards the Fish River Canyon, another short day over mainly gravel roads. Namibia is dryer than a witches t*t, as they say, and away from the river, virtually nothing seems to survive. We gain altitude slowly, the temperature around 17.5, so the vents are all zipped up. Easy going mainly, until after a short visit to the hot springs at Ai Ais (good coffee but otherwise not worth the detour) ... read more

The other morning I woke up early, really early. The purpose of this exercise was to see a sunrise, namely that over the very large ‘Fish River’ Canyon in Namibia, and it meant that at 04:45 we were up and folding away our rooftop tent for the first time ever. The intuitive will deduce from this that we had just slept in it for the first time ever, and the morning report to each other came back that the sleeping conditions were very acceptable for on top of a Toyota, a sigh of relief what with that tent being central to our sleeping plans for the next seven months. The morning report was also good from our stomachs, which had just digested our first attempt at a campsite dinner. Gas canisters still not filled, and with ... read more

Fish River Canyon, Namibia, 6 September 2012 After leaving our campsite at 7.45am, after having to wait 45 minutes for the Park gates to open, we travelled over unsealed, well graded roads. Again we viewed amazing scenery along the way. The Namib Desert continued to impress us with its rocky mountains either side of the road. We arrived at the Hobas Camp Site at about 4.00pm and set up our tents. At 5.00pm we then drove 10 kms to the Fish River Lookout for sunset. About 1 km from the lookout we heard a bang and we had another flat tyre. We arrived at the lookout cautiously. Instead of the truck dropping us off at this site then meeting us 2 kms along the canyon lip, we ended up walking along the top of the canyon ... read more

Well, that was a frustrating day (to begin). Our first stop was the South Africa/Namibia border. The border officer on the Namibia side muct have woken up on the wrong isde of bed, because she was quite rude. She made us list the make/model, serial number and RRP (in rand) of all cameras, lenses, iPads and laptops we were carrying as "part of the import rules", even though we were not importing them since we were leaving the country with them too. The worst part was, once we listed them, she then went on to input most of the stuff incorrectly in the computer system! Anyway, that was a total waste of 2 hours. Eventually we arrived at our camp. It wasn't too late but it could have been earlier if they were kinder to us ... read more

It isn’t hard to understand that just 2 million people live in Namibia as you drive a few hundred kilometers without meeting anyone – no cars, no houses, no people and just endless deserts. Here we are in middle of nowhere and don’t have any transportation to the south. It is during these times that we understand how helpless we are in this landscape. But nothing is impossible if you have some patience and try to reach your goal so our recent mission was to get a lift to the Fish River Canyon. Well it wasn’t easy and we cannot thank enough the amazing couple from South Africa who offered us a ride to the canyon from the Sossusvlei dunes, and we hang out with them for few days and we were dropped off in Springbok, ... read more

M – Welcome to Namibia. Finally we have arrived. And it pretty cool. Masses of empty space, very easy driving on nicely tarmac’d roads and very few people around. Not knowing what the border crossing might be like, we have played it safe again and kept the journey short. The first stop is a short one (150km) and we pre-booked ourselves into The Cañon Roadhouse at Fish River Canyon. They have a hotel and a camp ground. We are in the campground. Check out the photos of the cap ground facilities. The stonework on their shower block, and wash area are better than most $1m plus houses in California. Now look at the size of the facilities. Pretty decent, now think again after my next comment - the facilities in the photos were for the use ... read more

Around 4:30am my battery died in my phone which acts as my alarm clock. Oops. I ended up stretching on the river front around 6am. Breakfast was at 7am. Linda showed up very late as she is having troubles adjusting to a group’s time schedule. She said we are rotating seats in the van without a discussion. As I got sick yesterday, I asked to sit in the front, but of course she said absolutely not. Long story short, I told her I am not going to spend the next 18 days getting car sick every day because she has a stick up her ass. Oops again. John Locke said he would take care of it. He saw how sick I got yesterday. As Linda got in the car before me, she sat in the front ... read more

We started our drive from Lambert’s Bay, South Africa around 9am. We stopped for lunch at 1pm. We finally got to the border crossing around 3pm. It was pretty smooth considering John Locke told us that he has had many problems in the past with immigration folks. Ann, my wackadoo roommate couldn’t seem to figure out how to fill in the proper paperwork. This led us to believe that even though she speaks English, she may not be able to write in English. I offered my help several times, especially after she copied John Locke’s exact information. She went through 3 forms until she got it right. We then had another hour until we reached our destination for the night which is located on the Orange River. The landscape from South Africa to Namibia is extremely ... read more

Sesriem to Fish River Canyon There is another overland group paralleling our trip from Acacia Overland. Their vehicle, White Nile, passed us when we were broken down on the way to Solitaire. We found out later that he wondered at the time why we were having lunch at the side of the road at 3:00 pm. But he continued driving anyway.  Their driver has a long whip, which he cracks at every opportunity when in camp, much to the annoyance of all. We first encountered him at Lake Malawi, and we've seen him off and on ever since. We call him 'whip man'. This was a very long day over some very rough roads, rivaling the road into South Luangwa, only much longer - 600 km. Toilet stops along the road - ladies behind the truck, ... read more
