I skiied Morocco on Saturday! That makes two new continents in less than 2 weeks. I left Fez on Saturday with my friend Analee (who works as an iron-age archeologist in Jordan) and we made our way up to Ifrene, the Moroccan Aspen, and then on to the ski lodge at Mischliffen by grand taxi. Clearly a colonial era legacy, Mischliffen is just 2 small hills with two rope tows and a swiss style ski lodge and hotel; but what it lacks in verticle rise it makes up for with excellent people watching and dirt cheap prices. We were the first ones there in the morning. I rented skis in the ski shop - ok actually it was just a guy with several dozen pairs of broken mismatched 80s era slalom skis tossed haphazerdly into the ... read more

So I believe I was telling you about my trip to Spain before I got distracted with the history lesson. Codoba was wonderful and I had a great time exploring and meeting people at the hostel. The mosque there is incredable, it was built in the 10th century when Cordoba was the capital of Islamic Spain. Its HUGE, a giant square with a forest of columns and double arches on the inside. Unforutantely the center was cut out and a cathedral inserted in the middle by the chrisitian kings in the 17th century. The cathedral - done in the ugliset Spanish Baroque with trumpeting angles, big fat babies and bald-headed monks flying everywhere - both ruins the mosque and show by comparison just how much more ingenious and tastefull the much-older mosque is in its simple ... read more

Yep, I'm in package tourist land! I got here last night at 6pm afer catching the bus from Essaouira at 2pm. So, I had all morning in Essaouira. At the bus station I fell into the first hotel. I've gone down market again - 70 Dirhams a night with shared toilets and shower. I also booked my bus out of here. I'll be catching the bus to Dakhla at 7pm tonight. The guy on the reception of my cheap hotel was very helpful, he told me that he thought that, that bus took 20 hours! He also then predicted my intended journey through West Africa without me telling him. I had considered breaking the journey up, maybe stopping at Laayoune for a night. But then I thought, what the hell, get the pain over with! The ... read more

Ahlan W'sahlaan sadeequatee Wa asdequa. I'm still in Fez A humdulilah. Private Arabic lessons, I've decided, are the way to go. Mustapha comes to my house at 9 and makes me talk for 3 hours straight non-stop, no mistakes tolerated. I don't have to commute, I get more attention and learn faster, and its cheaper than school too. I'll still probably go back to the school in January for one more 6 week course if only to be part of the social scene there, then its private lessons exclusively until I feel like I can take the final class and get my diploma or certificate, or whatever they give here. Arabic, I've decided, is not impossible to learn, though some have told me otherwise. There are however some major difficulties involved (those who have no need ... read more

Heaven is... fresh fish for Lunch. ... the endless hospitality of the couple who's guest house I am staying in, here in Essaouira. Their website is www.essaouiranet.com/dar-nafoura tel 00212(0)44 47 28 55. I wouldn't normally give a plug for the places I've laid my head, but their service has been exceptional. Heaven is... the scenery in Essaouira, and if you are a surfing dude it's a great place to windsurf. Oh, and the food is excellent. Having said that, its not a place to swim, as the rip tides are very strong. The journey here was uneventful - I used the bus company Supratours. I found my guest house by just wandering around the Medina - it's a short walk from the bus stop. It was 11 am in the morning - the front door was ... read more

I am now in Marrakesh. I am not spending long here because I've got my Mauritanian Visa. The Visa is for one month from the day that it is issued. So, I need to make for the border. The Visa was issued yesterday. I was at the consulate at 8.30am. They said to come back at 3pm. I did, but they kept everyone waiting outside the Consulate for 1.5 hours! After getting the visa I did a bit of shopping including buying a new pair of Chino's for 100 Dirhams, from a shop which had everything for a 100 Dh offer on. I needed to replace my only pair of trousers as I had noticed they were developing an embarrassing hole! This morning I caught the 9.30 train from the Casa Voyageurs Station, which is about ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the second of six posts I'll make about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004 that I did with my parents and my uncle Anders. The last post covered my time on Lanzarote and this one covers my time in Morocco. The second landfall on our Atlantic Cruise was in beautiful Agadir on the Moroccan coast. It was a fairly short landfall so we were determined to make our time here count. We were not alone in that thought and you could really tell that the landfalls of cruise ships have an impact on the local community. It reflected in the general mentality here with a plethora of taxi drivers waiting by the docks to take us tourists to their favorite vendors and select photo hot ... read more

Got up early this morning to get a Taxi to the Mauritanian Embassy in Rabat. Only to find a note pinned to the wall saying that they don't issue Visas! Serves me right for believing the Lonely Planet and not checking! The note said that Visa's are issued at 382 Route d'El Jadeda, Bequsejour, Casablanca. As a result I'm now in Casa. I'll be at the Consulate in Casa first thing in the morning! I visited the Hassan II Mosque this afternoon in Casa. It is the world's 3rd largest religious building. It can hold over 20,000 people and another 80,000 in the surrounding courtyards. Casablanca is a very Cosmopolitan City - it hardly feels like I am in Africa. Wide Boulevards, designer sunglasses, and not many veiled women. It could be any port city in ... read more

Haven't done a lot today. I've moved from Meknes to Rabat the capital of Morocco. Rabat looks like a very modern city and in many ways it is, but in fact it has a history of 2,500 years. Last nights hotel was a bit of a splurge - I spent 340 Dirhams - that's about 21 Pounds sterling. I went from the sublime to the ridiculous. One night in a 40 Dirham hovel, the next in a 340 Dirham hotel! But the more expensive hotel not only had decent sanitation but also a swimming pool! There was also a big banner welcoming some UN Conference on the Environment and the use of scarce water resources in poor countries, hung across the entrance. I thought the theme of the conference rather ironic considering they had booked a ... read more

Today I visited the Roman remains of the City of Volubus which is 33 km from Meknes. I switched hotels from the cheap hotel to a more expensive hotel, this morning. The room in last nights hotel was only just big enough for the bed. It was probably 8 foot by 7, it had a sink but no electric sockets. The hotel had one shared squat toilet and one shared shower for the whole hotel. After changing hotels I made full use of the facilities - including using their bathroom sink to wash my clothes. At about 11am I walked from the new hotel to the Grande Taxi rank. Basically the Grande Taxi's are shared Taxi's that go from point to point. They all seem to be battered old Mercs. The driver waits till the car ... read more
