We are finally on our way, but only by the skin of our teeth, let me run you through the full joy of African bureaucracy... We met with Rogers (our man at the port) at 0900 and quickly headed down to the customs clearing house, happy in the knowledge our container had been moved out of the port (behind a barbed wire fence we could not get in) and to a bonded warehouse with a company that holds and unloads our container and then when all (and i do mean all) paperwork has been completed they release the car. So we headed to the office with Roger confident in the car getting out before lunch. However, there was a problem... ...to open the container you need to request permission from customs to open the container (known ... read more

In quick answer to the question - Equitorial Guinea. Which is also where my luggage is currently sitting due to the check-in people at Heathrow putting the wrong tags on my bag. So i arrived in Mombasa to meet Alain after connecting at Addis Ababa (one of the lesser airport hubs it has to be said) to have a small argument with the baggage handlers over my bag. We hope the bag can be sent back to Nairobi where i can pick it up in a couple of days but there is a very real risk of me doing the first 3 weeks with the clothes i am wearing. I have popped out in Mombasa to buy a few essentials including "Senselove" pants, a rather tasteful Africa shirt and a pair of flip flops for £1. ... read more

We are getting there, but not quite there yet. Alain tried to get the truck out on Friday but it seems bureaucracy was not on our side. We were then all set for Saturday but then the IT system at the port of Mombasa went down and as best we can work out everyone there decided they couldn't possibly do anything. So Alain headed to the coast to have a few days relaxing and snorkelling. He tells me he met the entire cast of Finding Nemo whilst snorkelling (all except a turtle). It seems he had the resort to himself and other than washing his pants had a fairly relaxed few days. So to Monday morning and the good news is that the Customs people cleared our container on Saturday afternoon (so apparently one person was ... read more

The car arrived on the container ship on Monday, was offloaded onto the quayside on Tuesday and today it made its way to the holding yard. We hope tomorrow it will make it to the customs area. It is far from a speedy process but Alain is diligently visiting daily to trying and improve the speed of progress. We are hopeful the car will be ours by end of the week...... read more

Alain has arrived in Mombasa to start the process of importing our much loved Toyota Hilux into Kenya. We hope the car will arrive into Mombasa port tomorrow morning and it will (hopefully) take Alain 3 to 4 days to complete the paperwork. Fingers crossed.... read more

After a wonderful Christmas in the UK, we landed at the small airport in Nairobi, Kenya. It’s been my lifelong dream to visit Africa - a continent so different from mine in so many ways. As we queued for our tourist visa, the sounds of the Kenyan children’s choir (also arriving) filled the airport, and my excitement for our next adventure was overflowing. I couldn’t wait to experience the new culture, music, cuisines, animals and meet the people of Kenya. Maddi (the founder of the EvieGrace foundation) picked us up from the airport with Mercy who will also stay with us and cook for the house of volunteers. On the way to Ngong (sounding Gong), we stopped to get the boys at Global Shelter, some biscuits and sweets to celebrate the New Year with. We arrived ... read more

If you are thinking of a different kind of holiday experience, going on a safari is probably the best option for you. And when we speak of a safari, most of us would think of Kenya in Africa. You maybe heard of Kenya before but doesn't know exactly how beautiful and diverse this country can be, right? Here are some destinations where you can witness real paradise. Maasai Mara National Reserve It is probably the most famous Kenyan safari destination, that you can visit, possibly even in Africa. Having a vast landscape, great geographical location and a remarkable number of species, it’s no wonder why it is one of the world's extraordinary ecosystems. You can enjoy your exploration here by using camp mobiles and a hot air balloon. All, of course, with the help of your ... read more

So here we are, Masai Mara, another mythical place for me, and with the opportunity to meet the Maasai themselves I was pretty stoked for this leg of the tour...we arrived at our campsite mid-afternoon, and after sorting out the tents we were given the option of visiting a Maasai village before heading out for the first game drive, didn't take a whole lot of convincing for me...haha...six of us signed on for the visit, and shortly thereafter a Maasai guide came to get us and escort us to the nearby village...we were greeted by the chief's son, and after a briefing of what the visit was going to comprise (and settling the agreed upon payment to do so) we were off and running... We were welcomed into the village with some ceremonial dancing, and then ... read more

After a successful start to this adventure in Samburu it was off to our second destination: Lake Nakuru...same deal, a couple of days exploring the environs around the lake, and this stop afforded the potential to see a rhino, another top animal on my list... Bit of a haul from Samburu, and along the way we stopped at a signpost indicating the Equator for some photo ops, followed by a visit to a tea plantation that was cut short due to weather but cool all the same...arrived at our campsite in the early evening, a little late for a game drive so settled into our tents and then it was off for a pint at the little bar in the common building, sweet! After a breaky the following day we were off, with the plan being ... read more

And here it is, the number one all-time trip I have wanted to take, and after much planning and research it was finally going to happen! Africa, a continent that has always held an exotic mystique for me, and specifically the two countries of Kenya and Tanzania we were set to explore: the animals, the Masai, the parks/reserves, Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Zanzibar, and on and on...so away we go! Being a milestone birthday year for myself I floated the idea of doing some safaris in Kenya/Tanzania and ending with some beach time on Zanzibar to the Lovely K, and while safaris were not big on her list of things to do she suggested we add a Kilimanjaro climb to round out the adventure, perfect! This was to be a mostly guided tour, for some crazy reason they ... read more
