We have had a fabulous day today seeing our first hippos! Following a tasty breakfast at Sweetwaters, we left our camp at 8 am for our long drive to Lake Naivasha. We first stopped at the equator sign in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy for photos, then we continued on our way, driving on unpaved, extremely bumpy roads. Susan and I were in the back of the jeep today, which I think is a bit worse than the other seats over bumps. We passed greenhouses (Kenya exports a lot of flowers, including roses, which are grown in greenhouses), open air markets, and little and big towns. The scenery changed a lot over the 5 or so hour drive, sometimes flat and arid, sometimes more hilly and green. We passed countless herds of cattle, some quite large, and ... read more

We spent the day today visiting a chimpanzee sanctuary and learning more about the conservation efforts in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. We had fun with chimps, and saw lots of animals today, including two very sleepy lions! We woke up quite early, in time for the sunrise, and had quite a good view of Mount Kenya. It was a beautiful clear, sunny morning. We both had slept well, falling asleep wondering what animals were making all the various noises we could hear. Before I fell asleep though, as I was putting my e-reader down I brushed against something that moved, on the side of the bed. I used the light from my reader to illuminate it, and it was a good sized, light coloured spider. Anyone who knows me knows I am a complete arachnophobe, so ... read more

We were awoken at 5:30 this morning by an elephant shaking the tree right in front of our tent - what a cool way to wake up! We lounged in bed for a bit, then later enjoyed breakfast (we both had a very nice breakfast plate with fried potatoes, mushrooms, and two small very light pancakes - quite thin, and very tasty) along with fresh fruit. Susan had sausage and bacon with hers. We packed up and left Samburu at 8:30 for the drive south to the Ol Pejeta conservancy. We went through much of the same area as we had driving down from Nairobi, but for some reason it seemed quite different. It was a beautiful, very clear day, and we had a good view of Mount Kenya. At the start it was was flat ... read more

I am writing this sitting on the balcony of our tent, finishing my Tusker beer, and watching the antics of the Black Faced Vervet Monkeys all around me. There are so many of these little cute monkeys around the camp. We were instructed not to leave the flaps of the tent open (they close from the inside with a caribiner) when we’re not in the tent, and to keep the coffee things (mainly the packets of sugar) in the safe! These little guys will come into your tent if you leave it open when you leave, and trash the place, mostly searching for the sugar packets. There is also a very large elephant just down the way a bit, right in front of the restaurant. I put a short video of him on facebook. And there ... read more

Greetings from the Samburu Game Reserve! We have had a fantastic first game drive. Our day started quite early. After a very nice breakfast in our hotel, we headed out at 7:30 for the long drive to the Samburu Game Reserve. We had a couple of stops, the first for a short break just outside Karatina for a bathroom break and shopping at the “curio shop“ if we wanted, and a walk in the adjacent gardens. We didn’t think we would buy anything, but we ended up getting a few things (one a batik print which I’ll get framed and put in my home office). The so-called curio shop is a cooperative selling many different locally made handicrafts. The drive from Nairobi to Samburu was very bumpy! There was a lot of roadwork going on, plus ... read more

“No elephant is burdened by the weight of its tusks” - Kenyan proverb Greetings from Nairobi! We enjoyed our last breakfast in our Amsterdam B&B yesterday morning, before walking to Centraal Station and taking the train to the airport. Centraal is huge and there are lots of different platforms, so it’s a little confusing ensuring you are on the right platform. The train took around 20 minutes to get to the airport, and then we had to figure out where to go - the airport is really big and it’s also a bit confusing. I found it much more confusing than other airports. Once we found the correct check in location, it all went very smoothly. We had to show our proof of negative covid test, and the QR code we downloaded yesterday, and that was ... read more

Tanya always wanted to stay at this place. Yes, it's a little girl dream place. Slight issues....beside the hefty price, normal bookings need to be made a minimum of 18 months ahead. This is obviously pre-covid issue. So Covid came, and a room was available on the right day...one room left two months before the big day! So we booked! Little would Tanya or I be aware that 48 hours before our flight from Dubai to Nairobi, Tanya tested positive to Covid! No more plane, welcome 10 days isolation! The good news with solid places such as the Giraffe Manor...they have learn to work with a flexible mind. We knew we were coming...it would just be a little later. Actually, it ended being exactly two weeks behind the big day. They have 12 rooms, and on ... read more

We are back at home after few weeks on the road. I know, this sentence may look very special in 2021! What a world we are living today! Hopefully by the end of this year all this will be a far gone nightmare for the world. I just had a look at few other travel bloggers posting...I'm impressed by the resources, able to blog about times long gone, just to celebrate the fact that one day not too far from now, the world will be once again a small place. There is today an ethical point about traveling or not. If you are sitting in Europe, it's pretty simple....either you moved away months ago...or you sit nicely at home. Everything else doesn't make much sense. Europe today is a no go....Asia is closed to outsiders....if you ... read more

We got up early after a great evening at the Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi where we all got to eat Crocodile, Ostrich and Bulls testicles. Then of course there was sausage, lamb, pork, ribs, beef, turkey and chicken. All of which were BBQ’d to perfection and by the end of it we were stuffed and poor Zac was practically falling asleep at the table. The next morning we had to get up early to take Kate, Ben and Zac to get their flight which they did without any issues. We then picked up Dan and Toby for the start of Phase 3 and we headed out of Nairobi. The roads were relatively clear and as the sun rose we made headway and then Toby had a turn driving. It would be fair to say Toby was ... read more

After spending the last night in the tent as a family we again started the day early to head toward Crescent Island. It is an island full of non-predators which you can walk around and get amongst the animals. We took a little while to get there as bizarrely you have to pay to drive through a farm that has access to it and then drive across a make-shift causeway which is little more than heaped mud across Lake Naivasha. Anyway we managed to get there and were soon walking next to Giraffe, Wildebeast, Waterbuck, Zebra and a whole variety of gazelle. We also saw fish eagles and a variety of birdlife and some Hippo in the water. The highlight (perhaps for me) was seeing a Python (about 5m in length) sunning itself (which was roughly ... read more
