Dear friends of ours from NZ have moved to our neighbourhood, ie. Uganda :) We have enjoyed safari time with them in the Mara and showing them around Nairobi. It is great in the midst of farwells for the kids to reconnect with friends from their past. It has been a blast, not as many photos as I would like, far too much eating and talking. Karibu tena Andrew and Nadia and family x... read more

Maasai Mara What more can you ask for? A balloon ride over the Maasai Mara watching the sunrise and the wildebeest migration, a leopard with a fresh kill up a tree, lion prides sitting by the roadside, cheetahs playfully attempting to mate ( one more willing than the other), vultures feeding off a zebra carcass left by lions from the day before, giraffes sitting under a tree, elephants wandering past while you have a picnic lunch and a lion so thirsty she has dropped to the side of the road to drink from a puddle left by last night's rain. We asked for and got the crossing of the wilderbeest over the Mara river but with only a minute to spare. Two days of Kenya that could not be topped. Our balloon ride started with a ... read more

Since I arrived to Kenya with no plans whatsoever, I had to take what was offered. After an amazing visit to neighbouring Tansania and a great safari trip through some of the best national parks I decided to visit the famous Masai Mara National Park in Kenya. These trips are always exciting if you're a single traveler, because you never know what kind of people will join you on it. In Tansania I had great company, a young German veterinarian Jessica and a Polish adventurous explorer Joseph. We ha dan amazing time, although we didn't expect anything from the safari trip, we just went to see. It was introduced to us that we would be sleeping in tents, which is awesome, because I love camping, and this is what we actually did. We had simple tents ... read more

Having survived the night in a camp guarded by the mysterious Maasai we are up before dawn, entrance to the Maasai Mara begins at 6 am...we are the first vehicle in. Yesterday stuck in the mud of a surprise watering hole, our game drive cut short, we waited for 3 hours as the sun set over the vast plain and slowly, slowly the rescue tractor chugged into view. Yesterday sunset, today dawn over the plains unchanged from time immorial. Gods playground! The mind thrills at the size...scope...the sheer variety of animal life! Here a cheetah surveys the misty morning landscape from the base of his favorite tree, impala, thompsons gazelles and topi bound to life, large herds of aggressive buffalo silently eyeball us while sullenly chewing their cud.... Away on the horizon a mammoth bull elephant ... read more

People refer to so many places as 'Gods Country' and that's fine but believe me when I tell you that I have been to Gods' Playground! The Maasai people and their home the Maasai Mara is incredible... The mind boggles! For now we visit the people ...the Maasai Later we will visit the Mara or vast plain, in their language. It is 1,5010 sq kilometers The 4 hour bone shaking drive off the tarmac into the Maasai Mara reserve is described by our intrepid driver Henry, as the worst road in Africa and honestly it could shake the fillings out of your teeth! Jarred and bounced along for hours on end with only acacia thorn bushes and dust dust dust....clouds of grit...dust...a fine pale brown powder over everything. Every once in a long while the nothingness ... read more

What an amazing few days. I think this is the first time I have not seen the new year in with a few drinks, and also a first to be tucked up in bed before 10. New Year's Eve is not celebrated here but New Year's Day is, much the same as Christmas Day, it started with the slaughter of a goat and then the food prep by the women. This time I opted to go with the men and see what they get up to whilst all the hard work is being done by their wives. We visit approximately 5 houses throughout the day to wish the families Happy New Year. There is goat potatoes and rice offered at each house and the men take a plate at each one. I managed 2 potatoes and ... read more

Dafür konnten ... read more

Africa- here we go. 9 countries in 9 weeks and one step closer to home. We are starting this journey in Nairobi, Kenya with a few stops along the way before finishing in Cape Town, South Africa. After sadly saying goodbye to Europe we flew to Nairobi via Cairo and touched down at 3am. Blurry eyed and anxious with anticipation as to what was waiting for us on the other side of the immigration door we were met by Timathy- a Africa Travel Co (our tour company) representive who whisked us off to the campground, and decided to try get some sleep as we ignored the African sun starting to rise over the horizon. After spending the day at different levels of consciousness we arranged for a driver to take us to an elephant and ... read more

Maasai Mara 3-Day Tour 15-17 July 2012 After a quick breakfast at The Boulevard Hotel in Nairobi, our driver, Steven, picked us up at 7.30am. Steven gave us a quick briefing about the next couple of days and telling us that the road to and in the Maasai Mara National Reserve was very rough. Two months before, they had their heaviest rain for many years, leaving the roads with deep ruts from bogged vehicles. All vehicles had roofs that could be pushed up for excellent animal viewing. I was pretty excited because since Grade 7 and then again during High School history, I had learned of the Maasi People (and their jumping dance), and now I was soon to meet and see them. It took us 5 hours to get to the entry of the Reserve. ... read more

I got some antibiotics once I got to Nairobi and began to feel a lot better. I booked a 3 day safari to Masai Mara National Park and got picked up from my hostel and brought to town, where I met the rest of my safari group. There were 8 of us in the truck although, 2 Japanese men left after the first day. It took about 4-5 hours to drive from Nairobi to Masai Mara NP. We first went straight to our camp, had some lunch and went on our first game drive. We got incredibly lucky on this drive as in the first hour or so we saw zebra, giraffe, topi, impala, elephants and finally some lions. We were also lucky enough to see a couple of lions 'mating'. It only lasted about 15 ... read more
