So I have a few minutes before bed and since I am at a fancy hotel I have decided to make use of this "cyber cafe". I just had a wonderful curry for dinner and then a night stroll down the beach. I am in Mombasa. I arrived with two friends last night. The journey took 8 hours by bus (a real bus not a matatu) we got stuck once and the whole bus gets off and we all just look at the bus....like looking at it long enough and hard enough may do something. The men gather and start directing the bus driver and finally he tries to move again. It is hot and the sun is blazing over us. I am so thirsty but fear to drink any water because there is no where ... read more

Aaaaah! Mombasa! Elegant resort! What a way to end 3 months of work at the orphanage in Vihiga. I've been resting, reading, swimming and even getting a massage. I've signed up for a snorkeling adventure at a coral reef, transported there by dhow. Here are my last thoughts about the experience at Vihiga. I think the sponsors from TJ will find this most interesting. Sponsors: how often do you write your child? The children know the name of their sponsor and are eager to receive letters. Sponsors who seldom write don't understand how this is received by the child. Some of the children think of sponsors as their new parents...they daydream about meeting you. They recall details of your letters and pictures. You should see the look on their faces when they get a letter - ... read more

Buying a ticket on the Nairobi to Mombasa overnight train proved to be an exercise in inefficient African bureaucracy at its best. There were six people mulling about and only one had access to a computer so the rest stood idly watching. It really seemed like no one cared if they sold you a ticket or not. Normally, it would have been a comical observation but our driver was to pick up her boss and we were running late. Finally it all worked out and I purchased a first class ticket because there would only be two in the cabin. They assured me I would share it only with a woman. The safari company agreed to store some of my stuff so I lightened my pack considerably and left the cart behind. They a... read more

Kenya's coastline stretches from no-go Somalia in the north, past luxury beach resorts, to Tanzania's Zanzibar archipelago in the south. It is a relatively short coast at only 500km, but nearly every traveller to Kenya makes it here at some point, and who am I to break from the norm? Well, I usually am the first to do just that actually, but for once, I'll have a traditional 'normal' week. There's still lots to experience and one can find rich Swahili culture, scary young prostitutes, and, of course, beautiful equatorial beaches. This past week, I stumbled upon all three, or rather, at least one of them stumbled upon me. It's not that riveting a story, but it allows me the opportunity to use the word 'sex' in the title, something I ashamedly have wanted to do ... read more

I know I did. I even put it in the last blog myself. But then... I heard that the expedition I had left at 5 weeks was having a final party in Dyani to mark the end of their 10 weeks. I was in Nairobi any way and a one day trip each way isn't actualy that far away in the grand scheme of African travel so I decided to pay a little suprise visit. It was fun. I got to meet every one again and chill for a little while and not have to cope with jokes about becoming a permanent resident at Nairobi Backpackers. But turning up was only part of the story... I had left Nairobi with 3 other backpackers who were heading for Lamu. One of them had orders to try and ... read more

Greetings from Mombasa where the fish is fresh and life runs on island- time. Mombasa is a vibrant mix of influences and flavours and laid-back-ness- a stark contrast from the rough bustle of Nairobi. Life is good in the company of friends, with the night sky, the sea breeze and the kindness of strangers, Our new friend and tour guide, Sultan, loves his ganja, and as a result a lot of time is spent sitting in circles with the diverse locals discussing the state of the world and the concept of "one love". Today was a great day. In the morning, Meg and I went to the shipyard and negotiated our passage aboard a cargo ship that will take us from Mombasa to Zanzibar Island at the crack of dawn tomorrow. We had to write a ... read more

Can't believe I only have two more days in Mombasa. The time has flown by. I've been keeping really busy. The last few days I've been working on my paper. (In fact I'm waiting for it to print right now) I sent the parents off to Tiwi Beach the day after we got back from the Maasai Mara. They were getting annoying so had to send em to the beach as punishment. lol... actually I wanted to go with them, but I had to finish my paper. Oh well... you have to do those kinds of things near the end of a semester. I have my finals next week. Yikes... don't even know what I should be studying. I guess I'll find that out when I take the exam. lol The Maasai Mara was wonderful. It's ... read more

It's been a while since I last wrote an entry. Sorry things have been busy. My parents arrived Mon. May 1st. =) It's soooo good to see them. Before they arrived I was busy with interviews and getting research done. I was also busy planning some of the things we would do. It was a busy week and I was very anxious to finally have them here. Mon. morning I woke up early and went to the airport with Mkuu, my host-mom. It was a great first day with my parents and was wonderful to see them again. We came back to Mkuu's place and had a wonderful Swahili breakfast. Yummy yummy food and lots of it. My plan for the first day was just to walk them around Mombasa a bit. They arrived at 7 ... read more
