Had an awesome weekend since the last one, ain't been a quiet day yet, Friday we went to a reggae concert, me grace amy and emily. It was good, we went for drinks before down the Castle hotel which is like the poshest hotel on Moi Avenue.Pretty standard but comfy. Anyway i was pretty dehydrated and i feel asleep for most of the concert, alongside some random dude who was also sleeping. The girls enjoyed though, it was more a dj event rather than live music, not a load of people there so it was nice and chilled. Nice to have a day off saturday, the placement can get fairly tiring and draining more than anything so a break is good. Went to a market in bombolulu in the day, it was cool cos it was a ... read more

Just a quick note..... I jsut arrived in Mombasa this afternoon. =) It feels good to be back. Can't believe its less than a month shy of a year that I last arrived here. Katina and a couple of her friends picked me up at the airport. The frist thing i was reminded of when I stepped off the plane was the heat!!! it's so hot here, although it's been hotter. It's been great just walking around Old Town with her. I love being back. Katina and i are going out clubbing tonight. =) Can't wait to dance. Tomorrow I'll be going tomorrow I'll be going to see my host family. It will be great to see them again. I have to run now. I'll write more later. Miss you all! Ciao... read more

I'm sitting in the very back seat of the bus, gasping for air and waiting for it to leave for Mombasa on the coast. A veiled Muslim girl is seated next to me. She is dressed in the complete black full-length gown with head covering called bui-bui. Her entire face was covered...everything except a slit for for the eyes, but she had taken that part off for the bus ride. I start chatting with her but then it occurred to me that maybe I shouldn't be talking to her as a single male to a single female I don't know. In some Muslim cultures such interaction is strictly controlled. Even in Turkey some buses will seat unmarried girls with girls and guys with guys. I asked her outright if it was okay that we were seated ... read more

We were assured that our bus from Dar' would not only leave on time, but would take 8 hours to reach Mombasa, Kenya, the sixth country of our safari kubwa. Of course this was promised before Africa time was taken into account and after leaving only a modest hour late, we arrived in Mombasa at approximately 10pm, making it yet another 14 hour travel day. If only we didn't have to stop every 10 minutes for the driver to buy fruit or for every second passenger to load on and off their lifes possesions, or even for a border official to turn up at the border, we might have made better time. From our guidebook we chose The New People Hotel above lodgings with names such as Glory Guest House, Excellent Hotel and Evening Guest House ... read more

Matatus To Watamu After spending New Year dancing around fires in Paje, we sped back up to Stone Town in a rainstorm, tarpaulin flapping around our ears as our Dalah Dalah screached through the home of the red colobus monkey. A super fast ferry back to Dar and, after a day spent sorting out bus tickets in Dar, we were heading north towards the Kenya border and to Mombasa. After a brief stop in Tanga, we hit our first unsealed road as another storm hit us and we slid our way through a muddy border post. We spent a couple of nights in Mombasa getting train tickets booked, getting my beardy face trimmed and generally zupping around in Tuk-Tuks trying to see as much of the city as possible in a short time. Mombasa is full ... read more

This is the salary of a nursery school teacher in Mombasa - assuming that the community can afford to pay the $16 that month. In Kenya, primary school (level 1 to level 8 -- British system) is free. But nursery school is not. Neither is secondary school. And by free I just mean school fees -- not the fees for books or uniforms or feeding programs. So sending your children to school is both a sacrifice when living in extreme poverty -- 80% of Kenyan families. But sending your kids to school is also hope for a higher standard of living -- so famililies are sacrificing and the primary schools are bursting at the seams. Free primary education was introduced in Kenya 4 years ago. The system is still trying to adjust because it was a ... read more
