The Kenyan coast was somewhere to while away the time in between trekking up Kilimanjaro and meeting mum and dad. I didn't expect it to become my favourite part of the whole trip. I was already fond of the East African coast after visiting Zanzibar in 2001 but that was mainly because I had never been anywhere tropical before. Given the pure white sand that crunches like snow, the excellent diving and the fascinating little towns and ruins, you have to be thankful that the holiday companies restrict themselves to Malindi and Mombasa and the rest of the coast is unspoilt. The island of Lamu lies just off of Kenya, up toward the Somalia border. To reach it you take a hot, cramped bus for about six hours along an awful road, before jumping aboard a ... read more

Hi Children, hope you are all doing good, time for another round of trivial tales from The Big K over my eventful and funful weekend. Been a cool time since i last wrote here, Friday was a really good day with the Kids, really having a lot of Fun with them at the moment and also Poppys last day, so slightly gutting but really nice day nevertheless, the class went really well, all Kids are doing good atm, apart from Sauda who is really unresponsive at the moment, maybe because of the Pox she has but its been like that for a while, i think ehr uncle has been told to tell her to sort it out as she is so bright but so lazy also, even in her primary school. Friday night was yet another ... read more

We have a friend here named Steve, who is a Rastafarian acrobat with a home-made gym in his backyard. Steve has been friends with Chelly for years and for a while they were both working at zoos in Thailand. I only met the guy a couple weeks ago, but we really have a lot of similar passions and beliefs, so I'm sure he'll be a friend for life. After working-out at his gym last night, I started thinking quite a bit about some other friends-for-life, about two of my best friends back home: Ole Johnson and Neil Devlin. I was riding home to Mshomoroni on the back of a little imitation-Vespa scooter being driven by Chelly's brother Stringer. He was wrapped up in the craziness of the road and I was wrapped up in the craziness ... read more

Only a few days have passed since my last blog but they have been so fun packed, today especially i felt the urgent desire to tell the entire about them. Also, my mind is kinda like a big information sieve at the moment, days are flying by so fast, i am finding it hard to remember stuff from a few days back so i thought i would joy it down to remind me as much as anything. So, after another mildly sunburnt day at the beach i retreated back to the homely surroundings for games of cards which got everyone slightly too exciteable than is natural for pieces of numbered paper and then retired to bed for well earned resty. So, to Mondays fine happenings, of which they were many, and shall tell you now through ... read more

Hellew Ladies and Gentlemen hope everyone is doing well, i myself am feeling fit as a fiddle and ready indeed for the next installment of six nations action this evening. (ed-what a rubbish game!) Say what you like about me, i like a bit o' culture. Anyway, since the last blog much happenings have been a-going onand volunteering is coming along well too. This weeks probably been my most full on week volunteer wise in terms of a whole week. Poppy wan't there for most of it cos she was sick so it was mostly me doing the nursery duties alone which was really cool, haven't really done it a lot but i feel i have made even more of a connection with the littlest kids. Days are slightly of a blur but i can remember ... read more

Wow. I have a birthday this month, so does Chelly. After weeks of scraping by on borrowed money, chasing after visa info on slow computers and crackling phone lines, banging heads with awful embassy personnel, and riding busted buses on broken roads, we might actually get to enjoy them stress-free. It has really been fantastic, though--most of the time. We've balanced the unparrallelled headache of of the visa process with lots of quality family-and-friends time. Chelly has relatives scattered all across the Coast Province. We have a room at Dad's house in Mombasa's Mshomoroni neighborhood. We also have a bed at Auntie's house in town, where 7 sisters, brothers, and cousins share a small apartment with us. When we go to the family home in Voi, Mom puts us up with a whole house to ourselves. ... read more

Jambo? Habari?Me? Nzuri Sana, thanks for asking. Many greetings to you all to my latest installments of musings on my Kenyatime. Following on from Lamu blog, we arrived back 'home' at around 4 in t'afternoon after a torturious 8 hour bus back from Lamu. At least first time it was anovelty, but on the way home we were stopped randomly three times by police and had to get passports out, and one time me and hannah were very nearly taken off the bus(for no given reason) by a police guy who was on a power trip, slightly scary but there you go. Also someone told us there are sometimes snipers to buses that dont travel in convoy, so yey! Managed to dodge the Bullets however and arrived back home considerably richer in mind and thought if ... read more

Well, its been yet another whirlwind weekend of fun here, just got back from Lamu a few hours ago, had a cold shower and went to get some photos on cd which i will try and upload asap! I hardly know where to start really, seems like so much more than 3 or 4 days ago we got the bus here! Long bus journey there anyway, nearly 8 hours on the bumpiest road ever known to man (if it was a road, i think we might of just gone through dusty fields?) Yeah and most of the way with sweaty guys practically sitting on me becuase they had people standing on the bus too, so illegal it was funny, but actually it wasn't! So, as soon as we got off the bus, must have 3 or ... read more
