From Turkey K and I headed back to Kenya. The first day there we spent in Nairobi (the most dangerous country in Africa, Renee). After a nap to recover from our overnight flight we went to the Masai market. Aside from getting some great photos, the highlight of the day was jumping straight back into speaking Swahili with a chat to a group of girls. One of them was 18 and was looking for a Mzungu (white) husband - she asked us if we had any brothers. We promised we'd send Liam over asap. She's at the market waiting for you, Liamy. Direkt nach dem Ausflug in den Tsavo Nationalpark bin ich weiter gefahren an Tiwi Beach. Das ist einer meiner Lieblingsstraende. Dort habe ich mich mit sieben weiteren deutschen Freiwilligen getroffen, um in das neue Jahr zu feiern. Jahreswechsel - fast haette ich das vergessen, wenn nicht die anderen gewesen waeren. So beeindruckt hat mich die Landschaft und die Tiere des Nationalparks. In Tiwi angekommen fiel mir aber ein, dass der 31. Dezember doch ein besondere Tag ist. Gefeiert haben wir direkt am Strand, angefangen mit einem warmen Bad im Indischen Ozean. Am Lagerfeuer gab es am Abend gegrillten Fisch mit Reis und Salat. Gegessen wurde natuerlich stilecht mit den Fingern. In dieser gemueltichen Stimmung war es total schnell 12 Uhr und wir haetten fast Mitternacht verpasst. Dass Weihnachten dieses Jahr etwas anderes sein wird, war mir von vorne herein klar. Und so hatte ich auch wirklich ein paar schoene Tage, auch wenn es nicht besonders besinnlich und feierlich zuging. Am 24. waren wir noch in der letzten Minute Weihnachtsgeschenke einkaufen. Das ist vielleicht gar nichts so besonderes. Den halben Nachmittag haben wir damit verbracht uns zu ueberlegen, welches Buch, welchem Kind wohl gefallen koennte. Denn die 12 Waisenkinder haben von uns Lesestoff und Suessigkeiten bekommen. Die andere Haelfte des Nachmittags waren wir damit beschaeftigt diese Geschenke einzupacken. Melli und ich hatten unseren Spass dabei... Am Abend gab es dann fuer alle Reis und Fleisch. Dazu muss man sagen, dass die Kinder nur ganz selten Fleisch zu essen bekommen. Hellooo All. Billy and I left Nairobi quick smart on his arrival and I’ve been e-stranded ever since. I’m getting used to it, but it is odd not being just a click away from you lot! I miss it. But instead I’ve been up to all sorts. It might sound a bit disjointed as I’ve written bits at different times. So first, on leaving for safari in Masai Mara, our van was empty save for our guide Tobias and his friend Ken, but it seemed like we were all relieved to hit the road. That is, until we stopped at the office where I was instructed to go to the 6th floor with a bunch of cash (1000KSh is the biggest note - worth about £8.50) to pay our balance for the trip. Sunday, Oct 25 Nairobi Yesterday was a hectic day. We flew in the morning from Maasai Mara to Nairobi (in a Cessna Caravan), checked in our hotel, went to the National Museum and then shopping for our climb. The Museum was very special as Rob has a keen interest in the theory of evolution, and Africa, Kenya in particular, is one of the main archaeological areas where skeletons and fossils dating back millions of years have been discovered. Back at the hotel we were busy rearranging our bags for the next phase of our trip together. We decided to do the Mt Kenya climb, starting tomorrow for 5 days, then fly directly to the Island of Lamu, for 4 days of R and R. We also wanted to get our blogs, and photos up to date. ... read more
