No trip to Mombasa is complete without a train trip on the romantic (i.e. old) Rift Valley Railroad to Nairobi. We got first class sleepers for the trip and had to accommodate a tight schedule. The train only goes on certain days, and since we'd arrived on a Thursday, the next train out was on Sunday evening scheduled to leave at 19:00 and arrive at the Nairobi train station at 08:30. Hakuna Matata. Our flight back to Doha was on Monday afternoon at 14:20. Assuming the train would be 3 hours late arriving, (after all, this is not the German Railways) we would still have plenty of time to make it to the Nairobi airport. We had a double compartment with four sleeper beds between the three of us. We could lock up the doors and ... read more

31. Dezember 2010, 7.40 Uhr. Genge (kenianischer Hip-Hop) und Beach, was will man mehr?... read more

We could not find a reasonably priced beach location nearby to Mombasa, so we asked the airport taxi driver for a recommendation and he took us to the New Palm Tree Hotel. Many places jack up their prices by over five times between Christmas and New Years time! We needed some rest time, to get over some cold and flu symptoms. W.. and N.. had both been harbouring cold/flu like symptoms during the Safari and E.. finally succumbed to it in Mombasa. We ended up spending lots of time in our hotel room and the wonderful roof garden / courtyard. Walking around the old town part of Mombasa is similar to Stone town in Zanzibar. The Swahili influence is very strong, and Fort Jesus, that was built by the Portuguese in their vain attempt to hold ... read more

Well, it's finally here. Six months in Kenya, and now my time as a volunteer is over. When I think back on it I can't remember where the days went. It seems like just a moment since I was saying goodbye to Liam and my family at the airport, and now it's me going to meet Liam at the airport tomorrow. Now we get to start our own journey, which is going to be amazing. The past while has been lots of moving around and meeting new people. Two weeks ago I said a short farewell to my homestay family and went down to Shimoni by matatu. Charles came with me until the Likoni ferry to make sure I was safe, which was nice of him. I caught the matatu going straight to Shimoni, which made ... read more

Since our last blog we continued teaching at the orphanage in Nairobi. We were teaching the same group of 5 boys and like to think that we had a positive impact! They seemed to enjoy our last day, when we provided them with lots of nibbles and a movie to watch on our laptop. It really was sad to leave them, they were great boys and had the best manners of any kids we had ever seen! We got so attached to them after only a few weeks, god knows what we would be like if we were here for longer! Before we headed to the coast we met up with a few other volunteers for a meal at the popular Carnivore restaurant. The food was great and we got the opportunity to try ostrich and ... read more

To get to the southern Kenya coast we have to drive through the city of Mombasa, East Africa's largest port and we're expecting this to present some obstacles. However, after only a brief battle with the traffic and some fortuitous guess work on the directions we're happily through and on the car ferry to Likoni. We are staying at Tiwi Beach with it's palm trees, white sand and beautiful warm water. The air temperature hovers around the mid 30's (Celsius) so we are toasty, even in our lightest clothes. Although the tide is low we still manage to find a couple of nice reef pools to snorkel in. Immediately we realise we've swapped lions on the plains for Lion Fish in the water. Funnily enough these pretty red and white striped fish are also potentially deadly. ... read more

For not having any nests the last 2 weeks have really flown by. I've kept busy with computer work and other activities and now I can't believe that my time in Bureni is over. On the Tuesday and Wednesday of the last week of November Charles and I went up to the town of Watamu, about an hour north of us, to stay at the turtle center there and learn about the program they're running. The Watamu Turtle Watch, or Local Ocean Trust, has been operating for around 10 years, and they have a large information center, a house for volunteers, and a rehabilitation center for injured turtles. At the moment there are 4 turtles at the center, ranging in age from probably under 2 years to 5 years. Some of the injuries include damage from ... read more

Sorry it's been a while since I last wrote. Things have been ploding along and have fallen into a rhythm so I haven't noticed the time passing. At this time I've been in Vipingo for 8 weeks, and have 2 1/2 weeks left. It one sense that feels like a long time, but the past 2 months have gone by so fast that I know 2 1/2 weeks will just fly by. I was lent a bicycle in my second week, and it's made getting around much easier. The road is like an obstable course, and you're constantly dodging rocks, potholes, and the occasional goat. I think all the askari (guards) at the gates recognize me now, and the always have friendly words for me when I pass through. In terms of nests the last while ... read more

When I traveled to the coast in Kenya, God gave me the amazing opportunity to visit my Compassion sponsored child! I had been exchanging emails with the people from Compassion for the first two weeks of my time in Nairobi. With little details about where I would be along the coast, it was difficult to arrange transportation from where I was staying to the location of the Compassion project. But somehow with some help from God, I was able to arrange a pickup from my spot on the beach! After driving over a ferry, passed a herd of goats, and through many dirt roads, we finally arrived at the Compassion project after two and a half hours. The boy, Mwenda, and his mother were waiting anxiously to see me. Mwenda is 8 years old and is ... read more
