Well, it's already been just over a week & the time has flown by! I'm doing really well & the weather is getting hotter by the day! Over the last week, I've been visiting schools with Moses & trying to plan what I can spend the money on that I raised running the London Marathon. It's difficult, as the schools range from concrete buildings with desks & chalkboards run by a team of staff, to mud huts with a few wooden stools & children using their laps to lean on, which are run by mere locals who volunteer their efforts. You start to think, where do I start? Or you wish you had enough money to contribute to each in some way. So, after sitting down with Moses & talking through possible areas we could use ... read more

Where did July go? Oh yeah, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya… Sarah got up early to make mandazi. Supposedly she woke me up to help, and I answered her, but I don’t remember at all. When I got to the breakfast table,, there was one lonely mandazi left, so I ate it. Sarah then let the secret go that there were more in the kitchen just for me- shaped like Mickey Mouse even! Once I got those, they others brought out the whole plate of more than a dozen that they had hid from me. Haha. I knew Sarah would take care of me ☺ Today was the last day of school at the school where we’ve been working. They close the school for a few weeks to give everyone a break before starting 3rd term. It was ... read more

I spent part of the morning taking care of some personal errands. George gave me directions that were something along the lines of “Take a right at the internet café, go past the Maasai, and when you get to the tree, you’re there.” (The Maasai are the most famous tribe in Kenya and very traditional. Google them.) One of my friends from Uganda once told me to expect directions like “turn right at the jackfruit tree, go past three termite hills and turn left.” In case you didn’t guess, none of the roads here are named or marked in any way. Stella and I went for a walk and had a nice chat. She showed me where they lived before the moved in with Mama. We got back in time to join the others for lunch ... read more

Hello Friends I am currently in Mombasa, Kenya, which is on the coast of the Indian Ocean. I am staying in a compound which houses more people than I can count. It’s owned by “Mama” Mary. Her house is never empty, currently filled with her son George (who lives in an outbuilding), another son Timothy, who is 13, her daughter Ann and her grandson Andrea (9), three girls who she looks after and sponsors for school fees- Esther, Mapenzi, Zwadi- Judy and her daughter Faith who also live in an outbuilding, and a family of 5- John and Stella and their children Sidney (12), Rodney (11) and Shirlene (8). Mary and her late husband started a school several years ago, and have been faithfully running it ever since. Their problem is that so many people can’t ... read more

Something exciting: yesterday and today, Sarah brought me breakfast in bed! Actually, she left it for me on the table before she went to wherever she goes. I told her that it’s really nice, but she can’t at home because there’s a monster who eats things. AKA Rosco Wilson. Today was a great day; really laid back. We did laundry in the morning (but my shorts got bird poop on them as they hung out to dry.) I’m fine washing my own clothes, but I’m really looking forward to having a machine to do it and knowing that my clothes are really clean. And get all the way dry. After that, we headed to the internet café. It was about 1 a.m. at home when we were there, and some of my high school friends were ... read more

The flight seemed to go on & on & on - I couldn't wait to land Nairobi as it is my first time in Africa. It was so great to step of the plane & see the landscape before me. I had a connecting flight to get so I hurried as we landed later than expected due to a delay at Heathrow. I only had just enought time to get my bags off the plane & drop them into the next flight from Nairobi to Momabsa. When I landed at Mombasa, I collected my bags so quickly as I couldn't wait to meet Moses. I walked through the arrival doors & scanned the mass of people, who were all shouting if I wanted a taxi. Then I saw Moses, and beside him his little boy Keegan ... read more
