Elisha and I decided not to go to Aflao to pick up packages with Sarah and Amy. We decided to ride on the seat of our pants, go where the wind takes us, and it hasn't taken us very far. We're still in Accra, struggling with the Ghana Telecom payphones. Oh guess what I lost a shirt, which brings me down to two shirts. It kind of sucks because it was my church/"nice" shirt. So now I just have dirty tank tops with stains from I don't know where. I got my first proposal in Accra today. Now I'm at 43. In Accra, all the obrunis look much cleaner and nicer than us, we all just look really dirty and stinky. Operation Hand in Hand was a really awesome place. One of the women that started it, Ineke, has quite the list of achievements, including starting health insurance in Ghana. Her husband, Bob, is a retired banker/director/actor from Chicago and he took us around the place. I really hope we get to go back. We left for Kumasi on New Years Eve. When we got there we asked around if there was anything happening that night, but nobody really knew of anything. So we decided that we would go to the last hostel we stayed at to look for Katrina's unfortunately lost toiletry items. We were out of luck, but we did meet two guys named Kwaku and Yaw. We sat in the lobby of the hostel and watched the Ghanaian version of American Idol for a ... read more

Sooooooooooooooooo.... A few days ago I left Dudevi, crying uncontrollably and ungracefully. The last three weeks went by much too quickly. But I don't think I really elaborated on Nkawkaw, so I'll start with that although it was a while ago. Father Paul, the greatest man alive, took us sightseeing around the area. We went to the top of the mountain where it really doesn't seem like the top of a mountain because there's a few villages up there and you could pretty much live there your whole life and not know that you were on top of a mountain. We went to go visit one of his priest buddies where they served us beer at about 10 AM. We also went to the dam at Akuse, where this guy took us around and explained everything ... read more

So I'm enjoying my last night of electricity before leaving for the second half of the village stay. We had a very enjoyable retreat but I think we're all excited about seeing our families again. I'm really excited to go back to the ugly turkeys of Dudevi. Man, they're really, really ugly. They have layers and layers of skin hanging off of their faces....euugghh. Anyway, one night in the village, we were sitting outside digesting our nighttime meal--delicious as always--and we were chatting by the lantern light. The moon wasn't out so it was pretty dark. Woesta was telling me that it was a taboo not to whistle at night, because it disturbs the spirits, and attracts dwafs. I thought she said giraffes so I got really excited, but she was like, "No, dwafs, you don't ... read more

I arrived in Accra on Sunday and have spend the last few days doing an orrientation here with other volunteers. The heat is incredible and will take some getting used but when I think of the gray miserables days and rain at home I think somehow I will manage! The people here are so friendly and eager to help in any way and I've learnt my African name (Ekwea) because I was born on a Wednesday. The markets are amazing and so busy. People in every direction continally want your attention and to shake your hand. There are children sleeping under tables and strapped to their mothers backs. I had an African drumming and dancing lesson on Tuesday. We learned the Fume Fume but somehow don't think we were going to win any prizes for our ... read more

I'm sore today. Yesterday I spent 5 hours up at Amasaman - the Orphanage site, and I learned how to mix sand and cement, make bricks, and carry them. I carried over 15, which doesn't sound like a lot but theyre VERY heavy. They hired 4 workers, who worked their butts off friday evening for 6 hours without barely breaks and yesterday we finished off the bricks, We only got there around 1 because we made lunch and had to take tro tro up there, which takes about a 1/2 hour 45 min. depending on how much they stop to pick up and drop people off. But the workers had started around 7:30 AM had no more than 1/2 break when we came with lunch then worked until 6:30 PM. Its amaising how hard they can ... read more
