Shopping has never been my favourite pastime, but in Addis it is certainly an amusing experience. We didn’t need to buy much, but what we did want managed to cause many problems. The main theme is for shop assistants to randomly select an item that they think you should buy -usually bearing no resemblance, at all, to the first item that you looked at in the shop or on the stall. So, on Saturday we were in Shola Market where Clare wanted to buy some shoes in preparation for the VSO Ethiopia 10th Anniversary celebrations later this week. In one shop, she eventually found some that she liked and having tried on one shoe, asked for the other. It took a while for the assistant to understand the concept of wanting two shoes. Then, while one ... read more

As part of my short term placement at the National Road Safety Coordination Office, based in Addis Ababa, I was taken to Debre Zeyit (Bishoftuu) to observe the organisation of the speed project that Sesibe, one of my colleagues is responsible for running. The project works with the Traffic Police to enforce speed limits along the Southern route from Addis to Awasa - which is a road with a high crash record (see my previous diary - Travels between Robe and Addis Ababa (3)). We set off at 9.30, a mere 30 minutes later than planned, and the first stop was to visit the site of a fatal crash on the previous day. The Traffic Police, who we had collected on the way, explained what had happened: the suggested cause of the crash, in which two ... read more

Clare and I moved in David and Nadia’s old house in Addis Ababa. We are both working in the capital over the summer and VSO have given us a very nice house to live in. My summer job is working for the National Road Safety Coordination Office. The organisation of road safety in Ethiopia is excellent and they are doing much of what is recommended to improve road safety in a developing country. So far, I have been very impressed. There are many benefits to living in Addis Ababa (or Finfinne - the Oromo name) - nice restaurants (Indian, pizza, croissants …), supermarkets that sell essential items, such as ground coffee, chocolate, cheese and imported wine, and leisure activities. Last weekend, Clare and I spent much of the weekend shopping - buying those necessary household ... read more

Famous for the famine of 1984/85 Famous for barren land, desert and death Famous for images of malnourished children with distended bellies Famous as the inspiration for the world’s greatest charity effort, Live Aid Famous for conflict and war with Eritrea Forget everything you imagine Ethiopia to be and every preconception; it's nothing like the image you most likely have in your head! Ethiopia is full of surprises! Did you know that it was one of only two African nations never colonised? Or that it’s known as the “Cradle of Humanity”, where fossils of the earliest hominids have been found? Or that 18 of Egypt’s pharaohs were Ethiopian? Not only that, but it is home to the oldest written language in the world, Ge'ez, the first ever Christian country, the origin of the coffee bean, and ... read more

Before I start this blog, I have noticed that in my other two there is one serious ommision....Ferenji fever. With the exception of Addis my days have been filled by little children, and some adults in rural areas, shouting 'You You!...Ferenji' at me, with some of the more enterprising adding 'Give me money'. I try to handle it with poise and good grace, but it is fucking hard...as (unknowingly admittedly) these bastards are just so fucking rude. Also what in god names makes someone shout out what the see (apart from that funny disease I can't spell and therefore won;t mention; I mean shouting 'Ferenji' every time you see a white person is like me shouting 'Mailbox', 'Car', 'Cat'...grrrr....anyway.... Well as you read in my last blog I left Addis, and Tatjana, heartbroken; knowing she ... read more

Well, I'm not dead....yes I can hear the disappointed groans (from Fordy more than likely); I have just being very very lazy. So finally I am going to write this....oh god, nearly 30 days...this is going to cost me so much (internet is 25cents a minute which equates to....almost 1.5p). I am going to split this mammoth task into stages....Addis + Bahar Dar, Gondar + Addis, and Laibela, Axum, + (you guessed it) Addis; hopefully I will have all 3 done before I leave for Kenya...actually thats not very likely...but heres the first bit anyway. Pictures will follow when the internet isn't suicidally slow. Well I left Cairo after getting fairly hammered the previous night at the incredibly expensive Grand Hyatt Hotel, with James, Marius, and the Aussie guy who's name I forget but who ... read more

Aye it's been a wee while since we updated you on our latest shenanigans - we had to put in some serious bronzing hours so we stopped dazzling our fellow beach bums - so a verrry belated Merry Chrimbo and Happy New Year. Anyways, time to shatter the idea that Ethiopia is only famous for Bob Geldoff, famine and sick jokes. Historically known as Abyssinia, Ethiopia is: * a very fertile country with abundant natural resources - we saw fields in every shade of green, much more vivid than back home - but alas prone to cyclical drought, which is a tad problematic given the near total dependance on rain-fed agriculture. * the only country in Africa with an unbroken sovereignty - it was never colonised by one of the European big hitters during the 'Scramble ... read more
