Christmas in Addis was very different to my usual cheese and tomato sandwiches on a walk with Martin, but it was good - made by being with some good friends from VSO. We even bought, and decorated, a (very small) Christmas tree. Four of us stayed together in David and Nadia’s house, and often stayed up late talking. I had a nightly argument with Teresa, but won the right to sleep in the lounge (which made sense as I was usually awake first). On Saturday night, we invited Nigel to dinner and had a Christmas celebration meal (pasta and tomato sauce by Mary, fruit salad by Teresa) complete with crackers and paper hats. Sunday was Christmas Eve. The four of us went for a leisurely walk along Bole Road, looking for places to have Christmas Dinner, ... read more

I travelled Addis Ababa with Patricia, my Programme Manager, Dereje and Patricia’s friend Emer, in a VSO vehicle, which was much better than having to travel by local bus - a journey that I have not yet done. We went via the Asela Road rather than going to Shashemene then up to Addis, as none of us have ever been that way. It was interesting, but the road was bad pretty much all the way and it took 13 hours door-to-door. I stayed at David and Nadia’s house in Addis, which was very kind of them. They had arranged with the landlord to give me a key as they were in the UK. On the Saturday, I went to an NGO Fair with Beverly and Nigel. I had intended to buy Christmas presents to send to ... read more

December 1: After departing Accra (and via two layovers in Lome, Togo and Abuja, Nigeria) Patrick and I made the most of our short time in the Ethiopian capitol of Addis Ababa. With enough qat and coffee in our systems to fuel a rocket, we escaped the evening chill by relaxing in the coffee houses and nightclubs of this interesting East African city. The soothing rhythms of the band and the dim, intimate light of the lounge in which we relaxed was a welcomed lull before our mad dash to Tanzania.... read more

This is our first blog entry - all going well you'll all receive an email update! We are back in London after just under 2 weeks in Africa. From the outset - I think it's fair to say that Africa is one of our favourite continents so it should be little surprise that we chose to squeeze is one last quick trip before we head back to NZ. The basic outline of our trip was to head to Ethiopia and onto to Uganda... After a small issue with the outbound flight - we found ourselves in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (we didn't quite make the flight we were booked on but luckily we found out in time and thanks to the nice people at Emirates we managed to change our flights and still catch the Ethiopian connection!)... ... read more

The Sudanese Embassy. AGAIN I went down to the Sudanese embassy the next day too see if there was the remotest possibility of getting the visa that would allow me to continue up to Egypt. Unfortunately not, but Monday was looking good. I did speak to a couple of other travellers that were also waiting. One had his passport open and was looking lovingly at a page. He told me that he had been waiting 6 weeks and only got it by speaking to the ambassador, who issued one personally. He slowly reached out to caress the light blue sticker with the tips of his fingers barely able to believe he had it. There was a Japanese tourist who had spent the better part of 18 months travelling from Japan through China into Europe and then ... read more

I woke and started to pack. Mike had found that the Hotel Wutma had 2 single rooms for little more than we were already paying so across the road we went. Once that was out of the way we headed towards the British Embassy because we needed to obtain a letter of commendation before we went to the Sudanese embassy. A Brief Description of Addis Ababa Addis Ababa is Amharic for New Flower, and was built about a hundred years ago as a capitol city and is mainly a business and administrative centre. As a result there isn’t much there for tourists and most tend to fly in for a night and fly out to wherever they want to go, or once they have arranged a tour. In terms of entertainment there isn’t much either. Most ... read more

The early mornings bring distant sounds of dogs barking, people swimming (at 5am), chanting prayers, bells ringing and the smell of a wood smoke that hovers over the city. I concede that I brought too little candy for the children. There's too many of them. They love posing for pictures and they to talk to people. I do regret not bringing my video camera, but the tendency is just push record everything. If you look real close, you will see that the people are really beautiful. ... read more

These are the first days of December in Addis Ababa. Within the gated community of the Hilton, one will find people in the basic pursuit of making a living. Work or play, activity is frenzied. One can see men, women, boys and girls, from different backgrounds, selling, buying, products, and services, legal or not, all in the hope of advancing one’s personal reason for being. The hotel lobby is full of stuff to buy. One can see the liquor bar, book store, souvenirs, on the spot roasted, brewed coffee with low sitting stools. No Java Dave’s by any stretch if the imagination. There’s a restraurant with a breakfast buffet for 125Birh. That’s about $15 dls. Business men and women, ladies of the night, 24 hour bank, a grocery store. With day time temperatures at about 70 ... read more
