Day 63: Thursday, January 28, 2010. Luxor, Egypt to Cairo, Egypt. Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "A visit to the Valley of the Kings- the place where King Tutankhamun was buried, before we make our way to the magnificent temple of Karnak. In the afternoon, see the Colossos of Memnon and why not join us for a visit to a traditional Egyptian village? Later, we board our overnight train to Cairo." We hit the road around 7 am (I think, can't remember and it was only this morning!) and head towards the Valley of the Kings. On the way we stop and take pictures of the Colossis of Memnon and there were some hot air balloons drifting around at that point- very cool. We head into the Valley and Sherif tells us that people would sneak ... read more

Day 62: Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Edfu, Egypt to Luxor, Egypt via Nile cruise. Per the Contiki Egypt brochure: "Today starts with a visit to Egypt's best preserved temple dedicated to Horus, the Falcon God (Edfu Temple). Casting off, we spend the afternoon on-board watching Upper Egypt slip by. We arrive in Luxor (the ancient city of Thebes) in time to view the temple of Luxor." The morning came before most people would have liked and we were out the door around 7 am to go to Edfu Temple of Horus. Each temple seems to get bigger and bigger and this one is very impressive. Sherif gives us another great tour and explains many of the drawings and how one of the walls is a play that people would come yearly to "experience". It confused a ... read more

Jan 9 5:30 am wake up to hit abydos and dendara with another tour.  It's was a few hours drive away from Luxor which is why we had to leave early. We went to Abydos first. This temple had some really amazing heirogliphcs. I wish I could describe these places better but I cannt figure out how to. Haha they are really old ruins with heirogliphcs and some statues. This one was cool because the roof was intact I think it is the most intact temple in Egypt or atleast south egypt. It was also nice because it was so far away they were no tourists there and only a few showed up when we left. The lighting on the walls and pillars made for great photos I'll try and post some my last day here ... read more

Our final days in Luxor are spent exploring the Temple of Hatshepsut. The temple as mentioned in the previous entry is part of the Deir el Bahri or the Northern Monastery. Hatshepsut is the most important female pharaoh and also one of the most successful. During her reign she legitimized her powerful position by getting painted in the pharaoh’s kilt and beard, ie depicted as a man. She was a productive builder, commissioning many projects in Upper and Lower Egypt. The temple we saw today was dedicated to her.... read more

The Valley of the Kings is an amazing area to explore, so full of history and should not be missed on a visit through Egypt. Here lies the Kings and Nobles of Egypt from 16th to the 11th century BC, including the famous Tutankhamun or Tutankhamen. Your entry price gets into 3 of the 63 discovered tombs of your choosing. Your stealth will get you into a few more. Following the Valley of the Kings we explore the Valley of the Queens (note you can’t take photos in the Valley of the Kings or the Valley of the Queens), Deir el-Medina – which is the village home to some of the artists who worked on the Valley of the Kings.... read more

After the past couple of weeks we decide to take things a little easier in Luxor. We get a splurge on a nice room and a super tasty restaurant which we were hinted is a jem in Luxor – Puddle Duck. The hotel we stay at turns out to be a treat, based on a recommendation from a business man who we meet along the way who mentions this is his favourite, more so the the Movenpick, Hilton and the Old Winter Palace (generally where businessmen or rich diplomats usually opt to stay in Luxor). As Christams isn’t celebrated and I remember the days when we used to wake up as kids to great presents I spend the Christmas eve walking around the city centre looking for Christmas presents for me, Ivan and dad. Merry Christmas ... read more

A funny thing happens when you don’t blog during your trip as you are traveling. You get home and you lose the motivation. Or perhaps it is because Luxor makes it into one of my ‘least favourite places to visit’ list. Either way, this blog is really overdue and has been sitting here waiting to be finished. So here goes: We arranged a driver to take us to Luxor from Aswan as we didn’t really fancy a long journey in a cramped minivan again. We had hired drivers many times in India and always found them to be pretty safe and considerate. I guess good luck can only last so long… Our driver was a twenty something Egyptian with serious boyracer ambitions. His car was decorated with stickers, fluffy toys and little signs in broken English ... read more

The day began with the usual breakfast at the hotel. Our room, though not fancy, is very acceptable. Breakfast is somewhat marginal, but again, acceptable. For this day, we hired a guide to show us three major places: Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and the Hatshepsut Temple. The ancient city of Thebes (now Luxor) was located on the east side of the Nile River. This is where the two major temples, Luxor and Karnack, are located. To the west of the Nile were the locations of the tombs for the pharaohs. Apparently, after vandalism and theft at the pyramids near Cairo, the decision was made to hide the tombs of the future pharaohs. The Valley of the Kings is a handful of miles west of Luxor in a very desolate area. Tombs were ... read more

Today, we awoke heinously early, in order to catch our 7:45 flight from Cairo to Luxor. In case you don’t know what heinously early is, that is 5:45. In the morning. We left for the airport, and arrived early enough to have to wait an hour and a half for the flight. In that time, we had breakfast, and chatted about our lives, and, invariably, politics. The flight itself was fine, the part of it I was awake. I had the window seat, but all there was to see was desert and more desert. We arrived in Luxor, and took a taxi to the hotel. From the drive, and from later explorations, we decided that Luxor is indeed much nicer than Cairo. For one, it is far greener, and has much more agriculture. Secondly, the Nile ... read more
