Born to be Wild

My Dad and I will be traveling through the near and middle east from November 8th to December 15th. Perhaps there should be some really important purpose to the trip, but mainly it is to learn more about the world, have fun, help me learn World History first hand, and explore the political situations in each country. We both love to travel, and to immerse our selves in the cultures and environments of our destinations. We are quite adventurous, and enjoy scuba diving, paragliding, elephant or camel treking, and skydiving. Honestly, that is all the explanation I can think of right now.

Today was our last day in Athens. We had breakfast, and headed out into the beautiful...make that rainy, day. It was raining quite hard, so we went hopping from covered place to covered place, trying in vain to stay dry. We happened to hop past a meat and fish market, which we went into, because it was covered. First, we wandered through the meat market, full of skinned animals and their heads. I took this for a short while, then went into the fish market, which I actually found interesting, because it helps show you what is under the waves. The answer is, lots of assorted fish and octopi, squid, and crab. Honestly, we just messed around, looking at random shops and places until lunch. For lunch, we ate at an outdoor restaurant (covered, by the ... read more

Today we again awoke and had breakfast. Once again, this breakfast was not fantastic, but was far from terrible. I just ate multiple bowls of coco puffs. We decided that we would start out the day by visiting the Museum of Cycladic Art. However, it took slightly longer than we had intended it to take. First, we had trouble finding it, and walked past several turns, then right past it, though this allowed us to wander through the national gardens. The gardens were densely forested, with pools for koi. Next to the gardens was the Parliament, so we were able to see it, and the guards dressed in traditional uniforms. Also, we got sidetracked by the War Museum, which we stopped in. It took us through the Greek resistance in World War 2, then the modern ... read more

Today was our first day here in Athens. Ah, how I love the smell of Europe in the morning! We awoke not too early after a good night’s rest, and finished posting some pictures and some blog posts. There, the admin is done. Immediately thereafter, we headed down for breakfast, which consisted of cereal, coffee, and what was supposed to be toast. I say supposed to be, because when Dad threw his bread into the mass toasting machine, it wouldn’t give it back, then set it on fire. That’s right, it didn’t burn it, it literally lit it on fire. Dad had burnt toast, I opted for bread with jam. After our breakfast fun, we headed for the post office, to send some postcards to all of you. However, the post office was totally full, so ... read more

Wednesday was a pretty uneventful day. We packed up very early as we had an early morning flight to Athens. Jerome gave us a ride to the airport about 6:00 and we bid farewell. He was a superb host, and Dubai was an excellent experience for us. We caught our flight to Athens, via Bahrain, on Gulf Air and settled in for about 5 ½ hours or so. We arrived in Athens early afternoon where it was raining heavily. So, we checked into our hotel, went for a short walk to get something to eat, and then settled in to catch up on some admin work (postcards, blog updates, etc). Tomorrow, we start our exploration of Athens and our look at Greek history. ... read more

This was our last day in Dubai, so we decided to do something really fun. For the first part of the day, we went out to the backcountry, where there isn’t much besides sand and a few hardy plants. We drove around in the car for a while on some back country “roads”, having fun going over the extreme bumps and getting jolted around. Then, we stopped for lunch, and had a go at sand boarding down a nearby dune. Everyone went, even Dad. The upside is that it is loads of fun going down the dunes. The downside is that you then have to climb back up the dune, which is extremely hard to do in soft sand, and gets your shoes absolutely filled with sand. I am not the world’s finest sand boarder, but ... read more

We decided to spend Monday back in Dubai with sightseeing in the city. As Jerome had some things to do, we took a taxi to the Dubai Museum, and agreed on a time to meet later at the Dubai Mall. The Dubai Museum is located very near to Dubai Creek, the historic location of the heart of the emirate. The museum is exceptionally well done. It appears small from the outside, but has an extensive underground section that one to walk through examples of historic Bedouin camps, towns, etc. An interesting factoid. . . human artifacts have been found in Dubai dating back to at least 5000 years ago. This is consistent with much of this part of the world which has been inhabited, and fought over, for a very long time. After completing the museum, ... read more

Today was the scheduled camping day, however, it was not to be. The weather was threatening, spitting a little rain, and there were no camping spots where we intended to go. We did have a great day, despite that. We again started the day with breakfast at Costa Coffee, and then headed out into the desert. Our first stop was a grocery market, then a desert wadi. We stopped at the entrance to the wadi, and started hiking in, carrying our food. To be honest, I had thought of wadis as much more lush and with more water. However, our wadi was pretty much totally dry and dead, except for a few trees and a small trickle of a stream that managed to keep some frogs in business. We stopped near an old rock wall and ... read more

We did not do too much today, but what we did was really cool. The day was really broken up into the morning and the afternoon. In the morning, we woke up fairly late, and had breakfast down at the Costa Coffee virtually right next to Jerome’s apartment building. Then, we left for The Mall of the Emirates, one of the world’s largest malls. There, we saw a mall larger than you can possibly image, stretching on forever, with employees just milling about to help you get where you want to go. It also has a claim to fame: an indoor ski area. The people there literally built a huge hill, covered it in snow, refrigerated it, and set up ski lifts and the whole shebang. Amazing what money can do. After that, in the afternoon, ... read more

At 5:10 am, I woke up and realized that we had not received our wakeup call. I quickly woke Stephen and we packed, got dressed, and hussled down to the hotel lobby. When I asked the clerk on duty about the requested taxi, he knew nothing about it, and said that as this was the Eid, no taxi was available. We had an “up close and personal discussion” about our circumstances, and he got us a taxi so that we (barely) made our bus at 6:00 am. The next six hours, or so, were uneventful. We drove through very rough terrain to Dubai. The one notable part of the day was the three (3)!!! hours that it took to cross the border into the UAE. We did, however, finally make it. At the bus station, we ... read more

Today was quite amazing. We started out the morning early, and did not even have time for breakfast before whisking ourselves away to the Oman Dive Centre. We were supposed to be there by 8:00 am, so we thought we would leave by 7:00 am. Well, Dad’s watch was an hour off, so what we thought was 7:00 am was really 8:00 am. Luckily, we left a few minutes early, and did not encounter any traffic, so we arrived there only a few minutes late, and in time to get all our gear and get on the boat. We made 3 dives today, 2 in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. The first dive was Novice Bay, then Cave Site, then Mermaid Bay. On all of the dives, there were rock reefs, as well as ... read more
