Hello All! Andrea and I are now in Luxor relaxing a bit. We ate some bad fod and have been a bit sick over the last couple days, but I think that we are on the road to recovery now. I also have an allergy to something in the air here it seems so I am a bit stuffed up, but not too bad....After all, Andrea is a pharmacist :) Over the last couple of days, Andrea and I have taken the sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan (which is about 13hrs) and it was not to bad at all. The fod on the train was a bit different, but not too bad. We also managed to catch some god ZZZZzzs. The first day in Aswan we got to attempt repairs on our broken toilet in ... read more

The day started very early and we rolled out of our beds at 4:30 am to take a luxurious hot air balloon ride over Luxor. Only 5 of us wanted to spend the extra $ to do this trip so we were our own. A guy from the balloon company picked us  and we walked to a boat which took us across the Nile to luxor's west bank. We were hoping to be in the balloon to see the sunrise but unfortunately the ride was a bit delayed because the winds were too strong. Fortunately an hour later we were clears to go and we were soaring high above the city. On one side of us there was the desert and the desert mountains where the valley of he kings was. You could see a lot ... read more

This morning we awoke early after a long night sleeping on the deck of the felucca. It was very hot and muggy all night - we were beached next to the agricultural area outside a small village and the fields increased the humidity. The inhabitants of the fields also created another joy - methane. When the wind was just right there was a pretty ripe smell in the air!  To top it off, the Mosquitos were out in full force so we awoke to more than a few new bug bites. Oh well, sometimes that is the way it goes!! Anyways, we woke up at sunrise and hopped onto the support boat for breakfast. The boat also took us the final leg of our journey down the Nile (about 20 minutes cruising).  If any Robert Allan ... read more

Today we had a lazy morning in Aswan. The guide gave us a much needed sleep in (well till 10) and then we checked out of our hotel in Aswan and embarked on our felucca journey. A felucca is a type of sail boat used on the Nile in ancient times. It consists of a canopy covering a deck. A large mattress covered the whole deck and this is where we spent the day and night all together. You might think that's pretty crazy to sail on this boat especially since many of us have been getting sick, but fortunately we had the help of a support boat. The support boat spent much of the time right next to us as we cruises the Nile. That's where we ate lunch, dinner and breakfast the next morning ... read more

On Thursday night, we took an overnight train from Cairo to Luxor. The food was quite bad, and the car was smoke filled with no ventilation, so we were happy to disembark early in the morning. After a nap, we went to the Luxor Museum where we saw mummies, statues, items retrieved from tombs, and Roman coins. For dinner, we enjoyed Japanese sushi and teriyaki chicken. The next morning, we boarded the Moon Goddess cruise ship for three nights on the Nile River. The first day we stayed in Luxor and visited the Karnak and Luxor Temples, each built for only one god. Karnak was the largest temple we visited in Egypt with obelisks still standing and a small manmade lake that was used by the ancient priests for cleansing. In the evening, we saw a ... read more

Today we are saying goodbye to our floating home, it’s been really nice. One of the best things (apart from the great food, service, facilities…) is that you don’t tip anyone until you check out and then you put one large tip that is split over everyone. We haven’t bought much in the way of souveniers and yet we have not much Egyptian cash left because we’ve spent heaps just on tips. Everyone has their hand out, understandably people aren’t paid much so they try and get extra where they can. It just gets frustrating when no-one does anything just to be nice. KARNAK TEMPLE We go first to see Karnak Temple and this is also right near where we went last night to see Salem’s parents. This is largest of all the temples and also ... read more

This morning we have been given breakfast in bed, which is really nice, except he takes away our left over cake! KINGS AND QUEENS In the morning we go to the Valley of the Kings, this is where Tutankhamen’s tomb is. There are lots of tombs built down inside the mountains, and we will be able to go inside 3 of them. If we want to go inside Tutankhamen’s it is an extra 100 Egyptian Pounds and since we have seen everything that came out of it we decline. He is still entombed in there but apart from that it is the same as the ones that we go into. No cameras are allowed into the area and bags are checked. So we leave everything in the car to save the hassle. In the information building ... read more

Ach couchsurfing. ... read more

Today is a great day, we spend much of the day cruising and then stop to see places on the way. KOM OMBO After breakfast we go to Kom Ombo Temple. The temple again is enormous and there are so many tourists, I would hate to see these places in the high season. It’s the low season now because of the heat. But Salem explains the history of the building, the people that used it and how it all fits into history and then leaves us to explore on our own and take photos. It’s a nice way of doing it as when he is talking you are able to listen better because you are not distracted by having to take pictures before moving on. They have built a deep pit with a tunnel that joined ... read more

Egypt From the coast to Cairo and beyond. You better sit down with a cup of tea as this entry is a bit longer than previous ones. I’ve never been good at sleeping on long journeys; it’s gone 4am and I should be sleeping, I’m on the overnight train from Cairo to Luxor. The train is predominantly a sleeper carriage train with two seater carriages at the back. Yes, that’s where the budget passengers go, £ 165 for the journey. That’s about $30. I‘ve come to the conclusion that the train is going so slow to allow the sleeper passengers a decent nights rest and not deliver them into Luxor any earlier than 6am. Several trained have zoomed past us so one can assume there are faster ones in existence. God knows where this train spent ... read more
