Diving to see a ruined site - It’s something different. It gives diving another element and also gives ruined sites a completely new outlook. Removing the sand from a head of a statue, a neck is revealed, soon after a left ear. All of a sudden I’m feeling like an archaeologist. Diving in Alexandria is Egypt’s other lesser-known diving spot. Remember the time when you were at school and you had to learn about the 7 wonders of the world? 6 of them were pretty cool but the 7th one just seemed rather plain. Well that one is here. The Lighthouse of Alexandria stood 152m tall and was built to give a reference point to sailors coming from the Mediterranean. The Egyptian coast lacks hills so it was felt fit to build a lighthouse to help ... read more

I obtained two new roommates 3 days ago, but they are not of the human variety!! They are 2, 15 day old kittens!!! They are probably the cutest things ever... although they are also the loudest things ever as well. They were found in the street abandond by their mother, and require syringe feeding every 2 hrs. They are soooo cute when they try to eat...they actually suck on the syringe and try to get more milk, and they get angry when I take it away to draw up more milk for them. I will try to take some pictures later this evening during feeding time and upload them. I'm lucky that I am unable to take home kittens and animals back to Canada or I would be tempted haha. ... read more

Yesterday was to put it mildly - CRAZY! On thursdays the morn'n vet goes to a different part of town and offers free vet services to working animals (horses & donkeys) who cant come to our clinic because its too far! So yesterday was only the second clinic offered and it was so busy! The first clinic only 6 cases were seen and yesterday we saw 12. There were even more cases than that but some left because they couldnt wait to be treated etc. So next week I think it will be even bigger! I wish I had videos of it because it was just plain crazyness. We were in the middle of a street, kinda like a town square. Cars and trucks etc were driving by, of course they had to clow down to ... read more

So yesterday was a very sad day at our clinic! I woke up to the ringing of my mobile, with a call from the Chairperson askng me to go over to the clinic right away. We had a tiny 8 week old kitten in hospital since I arrived, she had been abandoned on our door step and was covered in ring worm. So the doctors have been treating her for the last week. She still looked as ugly as hell because she lacked most of her hair due to the ring worm but she was fisty and doing great. When I arrived to the clinic she was just laying on her side, her temperature was so cold and she could barely breath. Aparently one of the vet assistants had "force fed" her by syringe that morn'n ... read more

So the clinic that I am working at it very new and alexandria is very HUGE (i.e. 4 million people) so not a large number of people know of the free clinic yet. So for this reason we are out in the streets working with mostly horses and donkeys that are passing by the clinic on the street pulling carts etc. Some of the drivers dont want to stop because they are unsure what we are going to do to their animals but we've been lucky and most of the ones stopped the last few days have been great! Their is an extreme lack of common sense among many of the workers in the sense that they dont realize that you should treat animal before it gets too ill! They normally wait until the animal can ... read more

All I can say, DAMN ITS HOT HERE!!! I dont think I have felt heat like this everyday all day. Even though I am now on what is the mediterranean cost its still hot and I think its even more humid here! I dont think my Canadian stomach as gottan use to the heat so I would like to thank the person who discovered gravol because it has been the biggest help! Other than the heat, things are definitely interesting here! I had my first "adventure" yesterday. The lady Dina who kind of oversees the organization and its functioning drove me to Alexandria (aka alex) yesterday and on the way we stopped at one of the many road side stops that displays animals for peoples entertainment! I havent seen anything like this before. The place we ... read more

Today was the day I had been waiting for: Cleopatra, The Catacombs, and The Library of Alexandria. We boarded our bus early and was shocked to see a special forces officer, who was packing numerous weapons around his belt, boarding the bus with us. All kinds of questions entered my head. Had a threat been made against us? Was Alexandria this unsafe? I already felt uncomfortable here much like an outsider or a second class citizen. I was able to ask Mayer what was going on in private, and he said when they did not have an assignment, they would escort tour groups because they did not want anything to go wrong with tourists. Tourism is their livelihood here in Egypt. That eased my mind a little. We were off to see Pompey's Pillars. Very little ... read more

We are very excited to travel to Alexandria today. This was one of the reasons we chose this tour. We have read and heard so much about this legendary city that we can't wait to see it for ourselves. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria was renowned as a beacon of culture. It gained legendary status in the ancient world as the city where Cleopatra and Mark Antony's stormy relationship began, and was home to Pharos Lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, as well as the Royal Library of Alexandria founded in the third century BC. Since it was once the largest library in the world, it established Egypt as the center of learning in the ancient world. Our travel time from Cairo to Alexandria took four hours through ... read more

He was right: There is no bus to Aquaba so Sharmel Sheik here we come! The guidebook suggests that this is not quite the place for backpackers and we do not plan to stay the night. At nine pm tonight we leave Alex and arrive on the south coast at six am tommorrow - I'm not holding out for a comfortable night's sleep - and we hope to get a boat across to Jordan later that day. I suspect that this will be an ordeal; I suspect there will be a lot of dragging bags around from one dusty carpark to another, that many a helpful man will offer cyptic directions and the boat will be delayed. Boats are always delayed. But we're up for it; we're raring to go. Goodbye Egypt! We have had a ... read more

Tomorrow we leave Egypt. On a Superjet bus that the hotel concierge tells us does not exist. No routes from Alexandria to Aquaba; No busses to Jordan. We must go back through Cairo. But it says in guidebook, we say. He looks confused; puckers his walnut face into a swarthy frown and shrugs. "I don't know. Maybe. Go to the station and ask." We insist that he tells us how much a taxi should cost and he rolls his eyes and near enough says: I don't care, find our yourself. He is the second concierge at the Nile Excelsior I've found intolerably rude and we arrived two hours ago. I do not recommend it to you. Anyway, this is my first proper entry so i'll not fill it with the negative; although if I began with ... read more
