After a good night’s sleep, I met the Binkleys downstairs for breakfast. The buffet was elaborate with multicultural influences, more fruit and pastries than imaginable as well as a honeycomb station. I took some of the smoked salmon to the omelet cook and had him do scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and red onion. He surprised me when he lined a ring mold with the salmon, filled it with the egg and folded the salmon around the eggs for an elegant presentation. After breakfast Dave, Merry Jo and I lingered over coffee for a long time enjoying each others company. At 8 we met our guide and driver for the day of touring. Our guide was a very pleasant, knowledgeable woman named Hanon. It was funny that she wasn’t sure of the dynamic of our group. ... read more

As I sit here at 4:30 in the morning, jet lagged, exhausted, sore and discombobulated all I can think is “Dang, this trip is awesome so far.” It is Thursday morning, so I have been in Cairo for 2 full days. I am finally making time to sit, write and look back on the past several days. Since this is a written blog and I can’t do the cheesy television flashback music, swirling picture thing, so you will have to imagine that for yourself as we travel back to Sunday/Monday and the beginning of this adventure. The trip was uneventful until I reached London’s Heathrow airport. Due to bad weather and some confusion over where the plane was going to be de-iced at Washington Dulles, the flight was delayed over an hour and half. My connection ... read more

"Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one's lifetime." -Mark Twain So here we go for another life trip. This trip, as I have said about a few others, is one in which I have been dreaming of and planning in my mind for years and years. The Middle East is a region where there is never really a "good time" to visit as it is a place that is wrought with perpetual political and social turmoil to a greater or lesser extent. I had purchased our plane tickets in May arriving in Egypt and 3 weeks later departing Turkey, with plans to visit Greece and Jordan in between. At the time of purchase the region was somewhat stable, but since ... read more

Woke up and realized it was the last full day of the tour. Today we would be visiting the Egyptian museum followed by a mosque and church and ending with a market visit. After breakfast we gathered in the lobby and boarded the bus for one final ride. First stop was the Egyptian museum and the first thing you noticed was the level of security. There were soldiers, machine gun posts and tanks protecting the building. Zizo did explain there had been a few successful break ins at the museum including one where the thief was trapped by the police on a bridge and proceeded to throw the artifacts into the Nile where they were subsequently lost in the water :(. We paid the final fee 85 EGP to enter the museum. Security was also heavy ... read more

I should explain the title. I suffer from Anxiety attacks. Most of the times they are minor and I am able to use them to focus on the task at hand. Every 4 or 5 years I suffer a severe attack that immobilizes me mentally. Today I suffered a bad one and at the worse possible time as well. Back to the tour first. I woke again on a boat swaying back and forth. I had slept better last night so I was getting used to the Felucca boat. We were leaving that morning to get back on our bus and return to the land based tour. After some breakfast of eggs and bread we settled accounts with the crew. The usual Baksheesh (TIP) is 40 EGP. I didn't have any small Egyptian currency so I ... read more

Tour is starting. Felucca Odyssey is the name of the tour with Travel Talk. My original plans with Topdeck fell through so after checking around I settled on Travel Talk which gets good reviews. Flight got in from Frankfurt at 1:30AM and they were good enough to send a driver for me. I had gotten a visa beforehand but the person from Traveltalk was there to help me through immigration if need be. Driving from the airport took about 40 minutes and I got my first view of the mighty Nile on the way in. It was an impressive sight. Got to my hotel Cataracts Pyramid Resort and checked in with both the hotel and Travel Talk. The tour itself cost $400 CAD and I paid 160 British pounds as a local payment. For Egyptian tours ... read more

Flights in and out of Cairo are dirt cheap right now, given the recent political situations there, so I decided to stop over there for a couple of days on my way from Kenya to Spain. I noticed in baggage claim that everyone else on my plane had connecting flights and that I was the only tourist coming out of the airport. There was only one other room filled in my hotel and the number of people at the pyramids could be counted in the tens rather than in the hundreds or thousands. The downside of this is that anyone in the tourist industry was desperate for my money, and I attracted quite a bit of attention. Regardless, this is the perfect time to visit Cairo. Everything has stabilized and Sisi, the new president is very ... read more

Egipat je jedna od rijetkih afričkih zemalja koja ima vlak… I ne samo da ima vlak nego je taj vlak nadasve udoban i brz. I tako me taj vlak doveo do egipatske prijestolnice - Kaira. U Kairu ima i bezbroj ... read more

A belated very happy Christmas to everyone. As ever, we hope this finds you all well and enjoying some festive goodwill and merriment. We have been lucky enough to have spent the last few days in the Western desert of Egypt with Justin, Rosi and the boys after leaving Southern Africa a week ago. It has been the perfect ending to our year away and a great place to celebrate our first anniversary. Since our last blog entry in Northern Namibia and the loss of our camera we cheered ourselves up with the purchase of an even better camera in Maun, in northern Botswana. We decided to treat ourselves to a "once in a lifetime" scenic flight over the Okavango Delta in a seven seater plane. Just before we embarked, a fellow passenger asked if we ... read more
