Geo: 30.0982, 31.2461I am going to try to do Egypt in 3-4 postings. This is the first. Egypt is an amazing place to visit. I chose to do a tour with G Adventures. This is a small group tour company that I also used last year to go to Israel and Jordan. Brenda, my travel buddy, also did the tour. We have known each other since 6th grade and first traveled together, to Europe, right out of high school. I realized very quickly how little I know about its incredible history. Of course, I knew it was ancient and could name a few historical figures – Tutankhamen, Ramses II, Nefertiti, Cleopatra etc.. I had no idea of the actual periods of time of their existences and how important or not important they were in the overall ... read more

When thinking of Africa, diving and snorkeling do not usually come to mind. This is a continent with wild jungles, unfriendly deserts, and dangerous territories. However, those who are brave enough to take up an African adventure will not be disappointed with the beautiful sceneries and diving spots. It is a continent that is rich in wildlife and marine life, and you can do both when you holiday there. Here are some of best diving/snorkeling locations in Africa that are perfect for exploring: Taba: Pharaoh’s Island, Egypt Egypt is best known for its pyramids and historic statues that date back centuries ago. Taba is situated in the northern reaches of the Gulf of Aqaba and is noted for its amazing marine life. It was once a Phoenician port and is surrounded by small pinnacles and walls ... read more

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. - Mark Twain We are back in Cairo! (Back at the Novotel). Susan asked for a room at the back to avoid the noisy party boats tonight, as we will have yet another early start tomorrow. We were up this morning shortly after 3 am to be ready for the drive to the airport at 4 am. We got breakfast boxes from the hotel, and headed off. The flight from Aswan to Cairo was about 1 hr 15 min, and it was a pleasant flight. We got picked up by the mini van and ... read more

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable. - Clifton Fadiman We met our travel companions last evening for our short meeting, then we walked to downtown Cairo for dinner together. We have 12 in our group, 6 Australians, 3 New Zealanders, and us 3 Canadians. We walked over the bridge, through Tahrir Square, to the Felfala restaurant. On the way I asked our tour guide, Amr, whether the restaurant served alcohol. He gave me a sidelong glance and said no (I had asked during the meeting whether the sleeper train had a bar car so he clearly thinks I'm an alcoholic). The restaurant seemed like the type that might serve alcohol (some locals but also tourists were there) so ... read more

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends. - Maya Angelou Another fantastic day in Cairo! I had an excellent sleep last night and didn't wake up till almost 7 am, feeling refreshed and ready for another action packed day in Cairo. Our room was nice and quiet on this side of the building (as soon as the wedding party moved inside). So much nicer without the party boats! After enjoying breakfast, we met our amazing guide Hend (plus two Australian women from the Intrepid tour) for our Islamic and Coptic tour today. We drove first to the Citadel of of Salah al-Din, founded by Salah al-Din (known to ... read more

When I was on my way to the metro to go to the pyramids a guy stopped me and said wow you look different where are you from? I said usa and he said his cousin lives in Minnesota. I was taken aback and decided to give this guy more of my time. He is the one who introduced me to Mohammed and also a tour company that sounded like it had a pretty good tour option. Again, I do not like tours, but being that I cant find shit and don’t know how to get places I decided to sign up for a tour. It would start by going to the desert in a few days as I wanted to hit up Alexandria for the library there before making my way down south. Unfortunately I ... read more

This place is very hard….by that I mean it is a huge city, 25 million people. I am in downtown so everything looks the same and when there are street signs (which is not that often) I can’t read them anyways….AH!!! I did, however, pose a question for help within a Facebook group of world travelers. It was answered and I learned about World Wildlife Day and decided to go to the event to see what it was all about. I also got in touch with a dude who runs a desert survival school and another who does running and eskrima stuff (sword or stick fighting). Cool!!! There are many things to do! Yay! After downloading a map program that will show where the fuck I am without the internet I ventured off for a 35 ... read more

So my last night in Addis I got eaten alive by some bastard bed bugs….i was using my sleeping bag liner which has anti bug stuff in it but I didn’t cover my face so they bit me on my upper lip and below my lower one! Swelled up something fierce…and it itched a lot…goddamnit…oh well…looking like the elephant man never hurt anyone I suppose lol…so I arrived in Cairo around 01:30 and immediately felt the annoying touting Egypt is famous for…blurg…anyways…pushed past that to find my taxi and went to the heart of the city to meet a guy who took me through three alleys and up five flights of stairs to find my dorm bed…no idea where I am or what im doing…but…to add insult to injury some mozzies decided to have a go ... read more

We left Alexandria after three days and made the journey south to Cairo. It was delightfully uneventful as we motored down the wide and not crowded toll road. That alone was different, as so far our brief experiences in Lebanon and Egypt were far too many cars and far too few roads to accommodate them. Part of the reason for the somewhat empty toll road was that there was a two-lane highway to our right that all the trucks were driving on. This road did not have a toll. We wished that this was the case in the States. Now Cairo is one of the most densely populated capital cities in the world with 17 million people, ranking tenth, just behind New York City and the traffic certainly proved it. As we rode into the city ... read more
