How many teens can say they did this? A beautiful sunny day with some GREAT news. I've worked my ass off at school and I certainly deserve a looong vacation! Yes people, it looks like I'm going to spend my long deserved vacation in -not one, not two, but in- THREE countries. I can't wait to make some beautiful pictures and enjoy the weather. Those three countries are Egypt, Israel and Poland. And just when I thought I got a break from all the studing - Yes! You can say whatever you want, but studing is still one thing we, teens, don't do for fun- , my mom told me that we are going to see some intersting places. I'm most exited for Israel. One, because it's the Holy Land (I AM a Christian). The most ... read more

It's an ongoing joke that started last year that whenever I take a day trip I first listen to the Beatles' "Day Tripper." I know the Beatles probably weren't thinking of travel trips when they wrote this song, but that doesn't matter. What was even better today is that Ahmed knew and loved the song and he had an iPod hook-up in his car, so imagine this: driving out of Cairo to the desert at 7 in the morning with the windows down blaring Day Tripper. Ahmed knew all of the words. Kept on playing Beatles music for a good hour or so. Hilarious to hear an Arab man sing along. Alexandria is the premier Egyptian Mediterranean city, and is about 2 1/2 hours North of Cairo. It is I've found the favorite city for most ... read more

Had the pleasant surprise of meeting up with Ahmed while I was finishing my breakfast at the hotel (which is a hearty falafel meal with bean paste and bread pitas). We set off around 9ish for our first stop: Coptic Cairo. This is down the Nile from where I'm at in Garden City (where all of the embassies are) and is home to the old Christian churches of Cairo. People don't often realize it, but a lot of Egyptians are Christian; after all, this is where Jesus and the Holy Family fled to during Herod's Massacre of the Innocents, and where Moses was found in the reeds. In fact, the beautiful Church of St. Sergius is built over the cave said to have given shelter to the Holy Family while in Egypt. And the Ben Ezra ... read more

Last year the highlight was standing in awe under Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. But that was Number 2 on my long list of travel goals. Number 1 I did today: the Great Pyramids at Giza!!! By far the best, safest, and easiest way to get to Giza and around is by arranging a driver for the day. The hotel I'm staying at has a set number of drivers they trust and who speak English. You set a price and they take you wherever you want. Luckily, I had the same guy who drove me in last night, Ahmed. He's a very nice, very kind person, who actually just had a little baby boy. For the next couple of days he should most likely be my driver as well. Giza, where the ... read more

I can't believe I'm actually in Africa! Wow! And really, today was extremely laid back and low key. I left Iraklio in the morning, and landed in Athens at around noon, and then waited until 5 to take the hour and a half flight to Cairo. Went very smoothly. And EgyptAir is quite the airline. One of the best I've been on, with great food, very comfortable, spacious seats, and extremely nice attendants. Landing in Cairo was awesome, too, because we literally came down right off the sand. It was like the airport had sprung up from the desert. A driver from the hotel met me at the airport and we began the hour or so drive into the heart of Cairo. It honestly felt like I'd been transported back to Southeast Asia, like in Hanoi ... read more

Just a few hours and I'll depart for my flght back home. I'm coming home early to prepare for my studies, and because the money has run out! Egypt and I are once again friends, and it is largely due to a friend I have made here and because of Cairo. You know me, I'll tell everyone when you are visiting a country get out of the city and go to the countryside, where the real people are. Cairo is my one exception so far. Cairo is massive, polluted, confusing and awesome. I do like this city. Yesterday a new found friend and I went and saw MIB3 in 3-D at this sophisticated shopping mall that was over 6 floors tall and had every store you can imagine, Timberlane, Fuddruckers, Claires, Baskin Robbins, Chilis, etc. It ... read more

Well, I finallY did it. I've seen the pyramids while on a vast, mighty camel named most appropriately, Ali Baba. Ali Baba was the strong, silent type and as such I was not able to win his heart or even a passing glance from him, the stubborn old thing. Riding a camel for me felt like what it would be like to ride a giant water balloon, swishing around, damn near falling over when he gets up and down. And of course I loved it. Enough with my brilliant camel story, onto the pyramids of Giza. The pyramids are lined up just outside of town (or vice versa, however you look at it). 3 huge pyramids, 6smaller ones, workers tombs, the sphinx and other pyramid stuff filled the desert landscape. Tourism is extremely slow right now ... read more

Cairo, primarily the pyramids of Giza was our next destination. Arriving in Cairo at peak hour gave us a nice taste as to what madness Egyptian traffic can be (including people driving in our lane towards us) and after two and a half hours we arrived at our hotel. The Egypt, Israel and Palestine part of our travels would be taken with a tour group and we were excited to meet everyone and check out Cairo nightlife. We were surprised to hear that our tour group were in another city and would be meeting up with us in Luxor for the remainder of our Egypt trip. What was more surprising was that there were only five in the group and no one would be taking part in the Israel/Palestine part of the tour. Considering recent events ... read more

My family of 5 just returned from a RCI cruise that stopped at Alexandria. We had booked our tour with Egypt last minute months prior to departure. George, the tour operator was always very quick to answer my many questions and always made me feel that we would be taken very well care of. I even called him prior to leaving to make sure everything was well organized for us. Our ship was in Alexandria from 7am to 10pm. Everything we organized was carried out very nicely. We always felt safe and we were very satisfied with our guide and driver. We met our guide at the scheduled time of 7:30am. He was waiting for us with our name on a board right outside the gangway. He made us feel safe from the first handshake! We ... read more

Yesterday was very quiet in Egypt. Everyone in the country except those in toursism, were off so they could vote. Those who weren't off yesterday are off today so they can vote - yes they get 2 days to vote. Our Egyptologist who is from Luxor and the owner of Quest travel who journeyed on his boat with us to Aswan, are all VERY hopeful and excited about the new possibilities. We are now in Giza again. We had an incredible night last night - a private visit into the kings chamber of the Great Pyramid. We have just finished a very delicious breakfast and we part ways with our travelling companionions this afternoon and eveing. We were sad to leave the boat yesterday, the Egyptian crew were so full of love and heart and we ... read more
