South America May 21st 2006

Today (Saturday) started earlier than I would have liked, considering we were out at an Asada dancing until the wee hours of the morning... but it was worth waking up for. Nicole and I walked from Palermo to Recoleta, an old and wealthy area of BsAs for the weekly Hippie Market. It is a decent walk, and the weather was a little chilly, so we stepped into an Italian restaurant for some lunch (lunch in BsAs is eaten between noon and 3 p.m.). After some free alcohol, complements of our waiter who wanted to help us "warm up," stuffed spinach and cheese raviolli, and coca lite, we headed to the market. This market was incredible! Hundreds of little booths were set up selling traditional and contemporary handicrafts. Needless to say, I heard more English spoken in ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Fe » Rosario May 21st 2006

Well, it seems like everyone from the program went travelling this weekend with the exception of Stephanie and myself, so we spent the time that we had together. I also spent a fair amount of time with my Argentine friends. Unfortunately, Charly and I had a bit of a falling out, something about him wanting to date me and me not really wanting to have a commitment to anyone with only a month left in Rosario. Something like that. However, I did have a chance to rediscover my great friend Cristian! It was wonderful. We went out to a club called Bonita (aka Satchmo) together on Thursday night just the two of us. We danced and had a drink and then ended up walking home and talking about what he would do with his life if ... read more

On the 12th, Mini decided to do a Sacred Valley tour, while I planned to organise my Spanish school for next week. That night tried the local drink - Pisco Sour (okay), and also tried the local specialty - guinea pig. It was really tasty with crunchy skin, and kind of tasted like quail. But you can´t eat too much of it, not that you got a lot anyway, as the meat is quite rich. On the 13th, after some last-minute shopping, Mini flew home back to Sydney. She was pretty bummed on having to go, and didn´t want the holiday to end. We´ve found Cuzco to be a really nice place. I got settled in with my Peruvian family who I will staying with for the week. Really nice mother and daughter - Yoni & ... read more

Another week. Another blog. I’m sure you must be bored reading all this by now… ;-) Last week’s instalment was a bit of an epic, and this week’s threatens to be just as longwinded. So, to help the easily confused (including myself), I’ll give a quick summary of the last seven days instead: Saturday and Sunday - Took a bus (or three) through the central highlands to a little market town called Guaranda high in the mountains with two of the new volunteers. The roads to and from this town are famous in Ecuador for their beauty, and have amazing views of the extinct Volcano Chimborazo. The town itself is quiet and friendly, with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside from a viewpoint on the edge of town. The road to Guaranda rises to over 4000 ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa May 21st 2006

On monday i went on a day trip to see ubinas, but this time to get really close. I was with a german guy Erhard and two Peruvians. We drove out there in a four by four and saw. Llamas, Alpacas, a rare type of deer and flamingos. We got within 3 km of the volcano and could smell the sulpher in the air. There was also a noise emminating from the creater that is similar to a jet engin. This was unexpected and pretty cool. Enough of that though. here is an BBC artical I found on the internet. Its more interesting than volcanoes.
