Our first destination after Rio was the costal town of Buzios, made famous by Bridget Bardot during the 60´s, we believe?? Apparently known as Brazil's St Tropez the place consited of fancy bars and restaurants and a host of beautiful beaches. We stayed a couple of nights in the town which was blatently designed to bring in the foreign $$$! After heading back to Rio for another footy match it was time to head South with our first point of call the picturesque Isle a Grande. An Island situated just off the coast about 3hrs bus journey south of Rio on Brazil´s Costa Verde (Green Coast). All along the Costa Verde you´ll find lush tropical forest meeting wonderful sandy beaches and Isle Grande was no exception. Despite it raining while we were there , we really ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Tupiza May 19th 2006

I left Salta at 00:30 and took a bus to La Quacia, which is the last town before the Bolivian border. The bus dropped us off 7 hours later. Border crossings are always tense places to be and I was expecting the worse at this one, but it turned out to be the easiest and most relaxed so far. I walked to the end of town and once I crossed the bridge I had left Argentina and was in Villarion, Bolivia, where immigration formalities were almost non-existent. I managed to catch a bus to Tupiza straight away. All throughout this trip, I've met travellers warning me about Bolivia's buses: they resemble the scene of a car crash, have no toilets and it's not uncommon to see urine running up and down the gangway, as someone couldn't hold ... read more

Hola amigos.... Just another average week of travelling... you know 20 hour bus rides... viewing one of the 7 natural wonders of the world... watched a huge soccer (er i mean football ) match with tons of ravaged soccer (er I mean football! this gonna take some geting used to!) fans on a big screen and then proceeded to the birthplace of one of the most prominent and rebellious figures of the 20th century...ho hum ...so bored! Our adventure continues picking up in buenos aires where we decided to break down and pay for a plane ticket north to Puerto Igazu...which is tucked along two rivers and bordered by paraguay in the west and brazil in the north east... a very happening place as it is one of the top tourist destinations in south america... thanks ... read more

Hard Hard Hard Hard Hard Hard Day Totally totally totally big time!!!! Read on We have recruited two new ozzie blokes that we met in the hot springs who also joined us for the football. We all argued over dinner and wine!! in our cabana if the weather would clear up the next day so that we could climb the volcano. The tour company said it would take a miracle for the weather to clear up and refused to take any money from us. However we were so persistent that they allowed us to try the gear on and if the miricale happened we could be prepared to climb. We had been told by loads of other back packers not to drink the days before the climb as professional climbers struggled with the climb. And as ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » São Paulo May 19th 2006

Hey iedereen! In de tussentijd gingen we ons vermaken in the gameroom. Tafelvoetbal...tafeltennis en poolen. Toen ff chillen by the pool en het TE grote complex verkennen waar zelfs een voetbalveld bij hoort en een helicopter op het dak staat. http://www.theroyal.com.br/plaza_ing.htm Wat ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito May 19th 2006

Hello from Quito to everyone wherever in the world you may be. Arrived about all of 2 hours ago and it's ace! Met so many people already and had a very nice chat half in Spanish with Wilson (from Ecuador) who was sat next to me on the plane - I think he was quite amused by my random outbursts in Español interluded with asking him how to say stuff in Spanish - also practiced on the taxi man Manuel who is now my personal Ecuadorian cabbie! So all is good - altitude hasn't affected me at all at the mo though i may be speaking too soon on that one. Have opted for the hostel 3 course beast of a feast for my tea tonight and popping back there in a mo. Location is amazing ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi May 19th 2006

Und in was fuer Zeiten!

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz May 18th 2006

La PAz is a great city and I'm excited at the prospect of being here for a bit, even if I've received no less than 6 warnings from different helpful people (police officers, taxi drivers) about the need to be verrry careful (mostly about fake police officers and taxi drivers that will rob you). There is a witches' market just near my hostel in teh centre where you can find all sorts of mystical looking potions and herbs. They also have dried llama foetuses which are meant to protect you from bad things. they look revolting. Last night Laurent (a Parisian guy I'm travelling with at the moment) and I went to a reggae concert in the teatro aire libre (outdoor ampitheatre) in La Paz. Just the first section was filled so it was virtually a ... read more

"I am a little nervous about biking the ´World's most dangerous road´, but it sure sounds like fun" "Don't worry" says Santiago, a La Pazian sitting next to me at a bar who found my spanish comical. "We don't call it that in Spanish." "Oh, what is it in Spanish?" "The death road" ... Well it was fun alright. Waking up very early (okay, for me 6:30 is early) I had a quick breakfast and jumped in the oversized minivan with Joe heading for the Death Road. It is called that, and its other name, because it has the more deaths per year on average than any other road on Earth. And, stressed my tour guide for the day with a smirk, these are recorded deaths. Lovely. At about 10 am we arrived at the starting ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta May 18th 2006

After a long 11 hour bus journey, i arrived to Salta. stayed in a hostel called ¨terra occulta youth hostel¨...yeah don´t understad the name either! I had heard so much about Salta, but after partyin so hard the previous few weeks, i just couldn´t fathom getting out and trekking or doing anythng remotely physically challenging. The train to the clouds ( had been shut down, so our best views were from atop Cerro San Bernardo...no more walking!! we took the telefrico up! stunning views over the surrounding mountain-side as the sun was setting! Salta is one of the most southern cities in argentina, close to Bolivia, so i finally started seeng the mix of cultures. The people were smaller, stockier and definitely less attractive!! The hostel was great...but me and my mate alex were put in ... read more
