So...onwards to Peru´s capital city. We stayed pretty close to the Plaza de Armas in the centre of the city, but Lima is a massive place with almost 10 million inhabitants and many varied districts. Wandering round the main square, which includes the presidential palace, it was very reassuring to see a myriad of riot police equipped with shields and tear gas guns, and there was even a tank peering round the corner. Great. At the time, Peru was gearing up for the election run-off between Alan Garcia Perez (former president from 1985-90, his term characterised by hyperinflation, devaluation of the economy and resurgence of the Sendero Luminoso - Shining Path) and Ollanta Tasso (radical nationalist, who by all accounts is a bit of a nutcase...promises to release the Shining Path leader if elected etc.). So ... read more

Carly arrives! I´m taking over for a little.... So i arrive in Santiago, and the first thing that hits me is...the smog. Even from the plane you can see giants wisps of white, combing over the wide red hills, but from the ground it is thick and overcast. On our first full day together we decide to tackle the 2 lookouts of the city, San Lucia and San Cristobal. Even from the top of Lucia, an old stone castle and gardens, you can barely see the outline of the Andes towering over the city...but the view is fantastic. Looking up to the bigger and more forested San Cristobal, with a tiny faraway statue at the top, I don’t really feel like the 6km upward climb (and neither does Greg, but he tries to hide it!), so ... read more

After scrambling to find people to go on a 4 day jeep tour of southwest Bolivia, I left Tupiza on 20 May with a driver/guide, a cook and 5 Israelis. For a country with a small population, I am amazed at how many travellers you meet from Israel. Not only that, so many places in South America have menus/signs written in Hebrew, as opposed to English. We'd paid $95 each, which covered everything for the next 4 days. Our guide was called Martin and like most Bolivians he had seen too much sun and had sun-burnt leathery skin. He also had several teeth missing. Sonia was our cook. It was like being back home as she both acted and looked like my mum. Day 1 was spent driving through mountain ranges, herds of llamas and small ... read more

So the only way to the Pantanal and Brazil is a 16-20hr train, doesnt sound too bad especially if we splash out and go top class with full reclining seats for a few pounds. Oh those trains dont go til Sunday, we get told, and its Friday so we have to go semi-recline and slightly grubby class, half price. It all starts going a bit awry at the train station with everywhere being a bit hectic as the strike gets hold and the distinct lack of any tourists/travellers still concerning me. Oh look theres some western looking folk, they are western looking but are all wearing dungarees and trucker caps (not the trendy ones that Gemmas loves, just plain red or green, think Mario Brothers) and they all look identical, kinda a mid-west american country look ... read more

We have spent the last two days helping get ready for the big event, Paola´s Wedding. It has been great fun to be able to prepare with Mauricio´s family for the big event. We have made flowers, prepared favors, transformed baskets and helped with the food preparations. Mauricio has several great aunts that are just like my grandmother. They are great fun to be around and love to talk about Bolivia. We will have more to report after the wedding but we are very much enjoying our time in Sucre so far. Family has come from all over Bolivia for the big day. Tomorrow morning all of us ladies will get our hair done at the salon. That´s all for now folks. We will have more travel adventures later. Love, Jessica and Mauricio... read more
