South America » Argentina » Córdoba May 23rd 2006

It is enough to spend just one day in Cordoba to get to know the center of the city, in my opinion. So how come I spent there almost a week? Basically for 2 reasons: The night life and the country side. Near Cordoba there are some small towns, each with different things to see. Two such are Alta Gracia and Capilla del Monte, which I visited. Alta Gracia is famous for Che Gevaras' house, and Capilla del Monte for Cerro Uritorco - a mountain which many people consider to be a mystical place, and many UFO sighting has been reported in the area. Scientifically speaking, the only unusual thing in the mountain is the high concentration of quartz in the mountain. When I arrived to Capilla del Monte it was too late to climb to ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Taquile Island May 23rd 2006

23 Mayo - Lago Titicaca, Isla Amantani On the Boat now, leaving La Isla Amantani and headed to Isla Taquile. I am sad to go, but excited to continue my journey. I think I should take this time to elaborate a little on my travel companions. I am traveling with two girls from New Zealand: Nikki and Kate. They are wonderful, great travel companions, high spirited, laid-back, and willing to do just about anything. They are so full of life and energy, and so accepting of me. I enjoy every minute with them. We are comfortable together and have become great friends. Nikki is a writer and an aspiring sand beach volleyball player. She is quick-witted, funny, and always has a smile on her face. She’s easy to get to laugh and calls herself “Photography Barbie.” ... read more

We had our spanish lessons with Lily from 9 until 1, spending most of this time practicing when to use para & por (for & for, I still don't get it). Lily then told us to write about our favourite sport for homework, how fabulous! For lunch, we headed to Govinda's for their set veggie lunch. It was huge. For 10 soles (about £1.70) they gave us a lovely salad, bread, a large bowl of soup, a main course of satay fillet & rice & a pastry. I was full. However, today's highlight was the Museo De Arte Precolobino. It is a beautiful white building surrounding a courtyard. The museum aims to display ancient artefacts from an aesthetic point of view rather than a historic one. So there were rooms full of beautiful Mochina era pottery ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires May 23rd 2006

Last day of our trip! And somehow, in our almost twelve-day stay in Argentina, we had failed to explore one of the most colorful and unique barrios in Buenos Aires: La Boca. With only a few hours to spare, we decided to do something about our oversight. Since we still had a couple of leftover subte tickets that we wanted to use up, but no subte line would get us all the way to La Boca, we broke our itinerary in two: we took the subte system from Plaza San Martin to the end of the C-Line, Constitución Station. Once there, we exited the station and located a taxi stand where we started the second half of our itinerary. The city areas around Constitución Station seemed to be as friendly and lively as the rest of ... read more

South America » Chile May 23rd 2006

Although we are now in Arequipa in Peru, this entry is mostly gonna be about Iquique and Arica in the of Chile, seeing as how things happen faster than blog entries make em possible to describe. After Copiapo we arrived in Iquique early in the morning with butt cheeks numb after an 11 hour journey. At first sight it looked promising, a large city spread out over a narrow strip of flat land in between the pacific ocean and the coastal mountains which loom 800 metres over the city. That explained why it is the paragliding capital of south america. Luckily for us we had somewhere to stay...with my cousins mother in law, who is called Edu. What Edu lacked in footballing skills she made up for in warmth and hospitality and she and her husband ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco May 23rd 2006

Three cheers for Adventure Life!!! Not only did they deliver everything they promised but they gave us a lot more. This trip highlighted Macchu Pichu and the Galapagos, both to be seen at least once in your lifetime. One of our friends had regaled us with stories of her Galapagos cruise boat sinking out from under her in a matter of minutes. Not being impressed with maintenance in South America I checked out the boat we were booked on. It was over 40 years old. “No way.” I told Adventure Life. We had paid for a tourist class boat. A few days later they told us that, if we could leave a few weeks early, they could put us on a much newer First Class boat for the same price. “Sure.” we emailed back. Everything Adventure ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi May 23rd 2006

Arrived in Potosi at 1am after a very cold, cramped and stinky bus journey. Got a cab with 2 brits to the nearest hostel and was alseep in seconds. Awoken at 6am though to the city church bells, the government of bolivia should pay for everyone to have their own alarm clock!! Finally got up at 9 and decided to try and see all the sights in one day. Checked out had beakfast then wandered around town (very slowly as this is the higest town in Bolivia) until time for my mines trip. Boarded the truck at 12 with only one other passenger, a journalist. But saw my friend Simone in the street so she ran after us and came along too. We were given wellies, overalls and helmets and then started the rickety ride up ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca May 23rd 2006

Puno town itself is nothing much special besides having many places to dine and to book tours from and the facilities to change money. It does have a beautiful asset though, that being the base to settle and leave your bags in storage for the night while heading out to the islands on Lake Titicaca. I arrived by bus from Cusco late afternoon on the 19th May and booked into a tour the following day for a 2 day, 1 night venture to the closest 3 islands to Puno. They are Isla Uros, Isla Amantani and Isla Taquile.. (not to be confused with Taquila! so the guide kept reminding us). This is the package tour that pretty much every operator can book for varying prices… 40-45 soles was the going rate.. don’t pay much more than ... read more
