South America » Peru May 23rd 2006

Hello everyone, We have been terrible over the last few weeks with keeping up this blog. We have a million excuses (none which hold much water) but our main reason has been our paranoia over our ipod and not wanting to flash it around anywhere remotely public!! But now we are in a lovely little hostel in Chile (La Serena) and it has internet in the hostel so we can ipod to our hearts content and you guys will finally get to see some photo´s. Ok, so where we left off.... Cuzco. We didn't initially spend too much time in Cuzco as it was just our base for exploring the Sacred Valley and Macchu Picchu. After our last blog entry we just had a a quiet but freezing night - gosh it can get so so ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza May 23rd 2006

Mendoza was a really cool place.... therw was nice big parks, central plazas where people would try ´hang out´and great location for the Andes. The people we met there too were all really great! After a long drive through the night, we arrived at Mendoza at about 7am in the morning to be greeted by loads of people trying to persuade us to go to their hostel. We ignored them all and set off to a place we had read about in the LP (Lonely Planet for non-travellers ;)) Anyway again the guide book failed us, as the hostel we choose was kind of dirty and grotty (or maybe it was just our room), but we only found out after we had booked one night because we were so tired from the journey. Later in the ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador May 23rd 2006

Even though I’m no longer in Valparaiso, but in the tropical Bahia in Brazil, I have devoted this entry to some final reflexions upon life in Chile and Valparaiso. There's one highly relevant theme that I still havn’t really written that much about. The machismo- a phenomenon highly integrated in the Latinamerican society, or? I remember conversating with some friends before leaving Sweden, discussing ways to meet the machisto attitudes that I was sure to meet in all sorts of contexts, for example regarding men insisting on paying for drinks or dinner or throwing comments in the streets. Recently one of those friends asked me how I had coped with these and similar situations, which made me realize that not once, during my time in Chile, had anyone tried to pay for drinks or food that ... read more

South America » Argentina » San Juan May 22nd 2006

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca May 22nd 2006

We took the tourtist bus from Cusco to Puno on May 20th. The usual bus ride is 6-7 hours, but we opted to take the First Class tour in which we stop at various villages and ruins along the way. Total time was 9.5 hours and costs $25 US each. We arrived in Puno at around 5:30 PM. Puno is the closest city to Lake Titicaca, which is the highest navigable lake in the world. About 70% of it belongs to Peru and 30% to Bolivia. Puno houses around 100,000 people and is overflowing with markets - I have never seen anything like it! At an elevation of 3830 meters, Puno gets extreme weather conditions where it is hot during with day and sunburn is a problem, but freezing cold at night. Though I had not ... read more

I wrote a long entry for today that I will update as soon as I make it to a cafe with wireless... until then... here´s my highlight: Jess and I put together her room´s TV with a broken cable and our room´s wonderful cable with a broken TV and created one funcional television! We watched dancing toothbrush commercials, a spanish cooking show and part of Law and Order, en español. All in all, it was a nice, relaxing night after a long day. And few things are greater than Spanish commercials for erotic tips that can be sent to your cell phone to spice up your sex life! ... read more

It would not be right for me to omit an entry about Dulcé de Leche and Argentine sweets. Dulcé de Leche is essentially milk and sugar boiled together until the two carmelize and turn into a thick and gooey carmel like paste. The Argentines eat it like butter on bread in the mornings, flavor their flan with it, make candies and pastries with it, and put it on everything. It is taaaaasty. I´ve been sampling it´s many forms (as I should!) and have thus far become the biggest fan of dulcé de leche gelatto. Yummy. Also incredibly popular here are medíalunes, sweetened croissants. Argentines eat them with Café con Leche (an espresso coffee drink very similar to a latté) for breakfast, which isn´t a big meal here. Medíalunes come sweetened with honey or dulcé de leche ... read more

South America May 22nd 2006

South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina May 22nd 2006

We left Lima on a 4 hour bus ride down South to Ica. A few kilometres away is a oasis town (Huacachina) know for its huge sand dunes which you can sand-board down. The town was tiny with a few places to stay and not much to do but play in the sand. We booked on a tour that promised a thrilling adventure, and they delivered. We drove out over the dunes in a 5 seater dune buggy at great speeds. We got taken to a "small" dune for a bit of practise which proved that we would not be gliding over the dunes at great speed very soon. We had to walk back up the practise dune if we wanted to practise more..... so we did not practise much. After that we got taken to ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca May 22nd 2006

22 Mayo - Isla Amantani I am in a magical place, an island in Lake Titicaca. This island was entirely terraced by the Incas and is inhabited by a simple people. We just got back from a hike to one of the main hills called Pachatata, or Father Earth. The sunset was beautiful and serene. We enjoyed Andean donuts and Muna Mate for one Sole, the equivalent of about $0.30. This place has an ambience, an aura about it that is very soothing. And the ruins at the top of Pachatata, coupled with the view, has a noticeable energy to it. The most amazing thing, or at least one of the most amazing things, is that we are staying with a native family for the night. We are living their life for a day. It is ... read more
