Due to Travelblog's server failure this entry was lost, so I'm just putting the pictures up and finishing the treasure hunt by saying the only thing we didn't find was a deep fried Mars bar - the closest we got was a Fish 'n' Chip shop which sold sweets. Drink of the day: Laphroiag... read more
It was our first bit of travelling for a while but we had Naomi with us and we determined to have an adventure. We left the sun behind at Gatwick airport and flew up to Glasgow where the forecast was showers and the first thing the captain said when we landed was 'Crikey! I didn't expect it to be this bad'. Where we stayed dry our luggage unfortunately did not, it could have only been out in the rain for a few minutes but every part of foam in my rucksack was saturated, I ended up wearing it backwards to stop myself being soaked. It was almost midnight by the time we were in the city centre and we had managed to find Babbity Bowsters where our key had been left despite Naomi not being ... read more
We had started out in Chicago the night before & caught an overnight Amtrak train through Toledo, Cleveland arriving in Buffalo in the morning. The train was spacious & the seats reclined without invading other passengers space but they were not very comfortable & very hard to sleep on. When we rolled into Buffalo in the morning we realised that most of the passengers alighting here were also on their way to Niagara but rather than catching a local bus for the forty minute journey to Niagara they were waiting seven hours for the next train there instead. They had settled on the wooden benches in the waiting room & did look slightly more comfortable than they were on the train. We caught the bus into town through the run down areas & then another onto ... read more
Our time in South America had come to an end, we had had our last tango lesson, eaten our last empaƱada & were flying to the States. Checking the BBC's website in the afternoon we saw that bomb scare on american bound planes might cause delays for us & seeing a news report from Buenos Aires airport we decided to get to the airport early. There were long queues at the airport & additional security checks that meant all liquids had to be checked but the staff were prioritising everyone making sure that noone missed their flight. We had our shoes x-rayed & couldn't take any drinks on the plane but there was no delay to our flight. It was our first flight with American Airlines & we won't be choosing to fly with them again. ... read more
Having spent the day searching for the perfect Boca Juniors memento, we found some compensation in the form of the cat garden. Actually the botanical gardens, this area is off limits to dogs (very unusual in BA) so it has somehow become the refuge of all stray cats. We do not exaggerate when we say the place is full of them. They are all in pretty good shape as well, & it seems like they have been rounded up & spayed/neutered as well. Best of all, most of them are friendly & love a good stroke too; excellent. Anyway, the evening was another great one. We met Jenny, Mira & Pratesh at their hostel & headed, at a fast pace, to the Academia above Tortoni's Cafe for a tango lesson. Rather than our previous experience of ... read more
We had a fantastic lunch today at a place called Cumana. It sits alongside two other similarly sized restaurants, but this one had a queue outside whilst the others were fairly empty. Why? Well, they are famed for their empaƱadas & there is about 20 varieties on the menu for only a couple of pesos each. We can vouch for the roquefort ones, delicious. Oh, they also have paper tablecloths & crayons! After lunch, we visited the Museo de Arte Decorativo. It is an incredible mansion built for a very rich family from 1911-1917 in an 18th century french castle style. Their affluence can be attested to by the fact that the dimensions of the main room were designed to fit 3 huge tapestries previously obtained. Rodin designed the proposed fireplace but the first world war ... read more
We had upgraded to the fast boat back to Buenos Aires so we would be in time for the football. We arrived at the port early, checked in & passed through to immigration. Immigration between Argentina & Uruguay is the best & most efficient we have seen, Mr Uruguay stamps you out of the country & passes your passport to Mrs Argentina who is sitting next to him to stamp you in, all very friendly. The fast boat was a catamaran & we were soon speeding back to Argentina until all the power went out & we ended up going slower than the ferry. The captain diverted the power from the shields & we were soon back to full speed but we couldn't watch the grand prix. In Buenos Aires we headed to Palermo where we ... read more
