Where to start? Well after 3 weeks of spanish classes I started to dream in spanish. now I don´t even know what I am dreaming about didn¨t undersatnd a word of it. maybe my brain is ahead of my tongue for the first time. This weekend three of us decided to rent motorcyles and take a tour of the Sacred Valley. It was abit of a challenge for me to get back onto a bike after the last ride ended under a ford ranger in Victoria. anyone who rides can say that riding becomes a part of you that you can not give up, it gets into your viens. I have been craving a ride for a long time now. noe was the time, the other drivers here well that will be something to tell you ... read more

After the last 4 days out in the wild of the Inca trail, it was nice to be back in Cusco. Refreshed and clean, I was up early to cover parts of the town and take the photos that needed to be taken, including the famous 12 sided stone. The rest of the day was just spent relaxing and wandering around the city. I also booked an excursion to do horse riding the next day. In the evening we went for a group meal in a restaurant called Fallen Angel. Really decent place, could have been somewhere in London, and very surprising I thought to be in South America! Thurs 26th now. All the group had booked to go White Water Rafting. Did´n't really appeal to me, so I went horse riding, just me and the ... read more

Well, i´m now in Cusco after completing the trek yesterday resulting in an amazing visit to macchu picchu. Last time i wrote i was in Arequipa and its been none stop since. We left Arequipa for Chivay and got there early afternoon, it had been a little chilly in Arequipa but it was freezing in Chivay...total shock to the system and i think that combined with the altitude made me get a little ill. The drive to Chivay involved driving along passes as high as 5000m and the altitude affects you a little weirdly as everyone just felt really tired and lethargic. That afternoon we drove out to the colca canyon which was really good and we spotted plenty of condors which was good, didnt manage to catch any on my camera though caroline got a ... read more

The drive to Cusco was long, nearly 11 hours in total. The weather in Peru is pretty extrodinary, on the journey we saw snow in the mountains, hot sunshine, torrential rain, and even lightning. We finally reached the hotel in the City around 7.30pm. The hotel was very nice, and immediately I could tell that Cusco was a special place. That night we met up with our guide Beatriz, who took us for a walk around the City. It was raining pretty hard, but around its cobbled streets, beautiful buildings, and surrounded by hills, lit up with surrounding villages in the night, a pretty awesome sight. Cusco was home to the Incan Empire. The Incans built the City in the shape of a Puma, an important Incan symbol. We had a walk, then went to an ... read more

I received a message from a blog reader saying that I had become the "Backpacking Bridget Jones" in her mind. So this is what my life has come to eh? Is it because I'm still searching for Mr. Right? Well, I know there are a lot of us out there...at least I'm not stuck watching The Dating Game on t.v. Havn't found it on Peruvian telly anyways! I arrived in Lima in the middle of the night after a rather exhausting indirect route from Brazil. Not quite feeling like paying for a taxi to do a few too many circles finding accommodation, I opted for a few hours kip on the airport floor. Yes it was uncomfortable and a bit cold, but it saved me a bit of dosh not having to pay for a bunk ... read more

I am starting to really rekindle the lost spark. Life here is pretty amazing, the people the landscapes the culture the ancient arcithecture. WOW. it is beautiful. The last few days have been absolutly incredable. I met a seniorita trhough a friend she has gone back to Lima now but she had taught me to get back in touch with a piece of my heart that has been missing for a few years scince my last great love tragedy. I knew this would only be very temporary but it was a good kick start. She spoke no english what so ever and my spanish still has a long way to go. I have never had to bring books an a date before. there was alot of page turning and fingure pointing. I guess all in all ... read more

From Lima, we flew to the city of Cusco. At 3,326 m (about 11,500 feet), it took us a couple of days to acclimate and get ready for the next phase of our trip. Mate de Coca (coca leaves) is served everywhere to help fight the symptoms of altitude sickness. Cusco (originally called ¨Cosco¨which means ¨belly-button¨in Quechua) was the center of the Inca empire. It is also apparently the continent´s oldest continuously occupied city. Many of the Inca buildings here were destroyed by the Spanish, who built many of their buildings on top of the Inca foundation walls. There are many Inca ruins outside of the city center and in the Sacred Valley outside of Cusco along the Urubamba River (which becomes the Amazon in Northern Peru and into Brazil). Cusco is a big city (approximately ... read more

South American trippe Part 1..the Cusco & machu Piccu stuff The general overview and first rather wooden blog...more work will be done on the next ones..I pwomise random general stuff 1) Its damn cold in Cusco and wet oftentimes 2) I did indeed get altitude sickness..cracker of a headache and a weakness about the body 3) there are a fair few people knocking around here travelling, some good ones and a fair share of duds who seem to want to convince the peruvians they can be more peruvian than they.. 4) The reputation of the irish as drinkers is known by peruvians, even those with only a few words of English. As if in response some of the younger irish I met on the first couple of days keep that rep up sticking to the pubs ... read more

HI All I arivived in Cusco yesturday by bus from Lima. 21 hours on a bus after flying all day from home. the trip by bus was rough but very worth while the scenery was fantastic. the sleep was not. the bus rocked from side to side alot as the roads are very windy. from sealevel to 3600 meters.a lot of people were getting sick on the bus. the altitude has gotten the better of me for the past couple days so I am taking it very easy til I get more aclimatized. I have met so many really cool people so far from justabout everywhere. I am really getting over the doubts I had at the beginning of this adventure. I am going to the school in cusco where I have chossen to study Spanish ... read more

It turns out that coming back to Cusco is almost better than arriving for the first time! That's my opinion at least. Since I know the city, Mike and I haven't had to spend the frustrating time trying to figure out where stuff is, fighting over what direction we should walk in and whatnot. And my friend Cormac met us at the airport, which was awesome, and everything so far has been great. The only funny adapting thing is the altitude... I swear it didn't really affect me last time, but then, last time I didn't really know anyone in town and didn't walk around for hours on the first day and drink a few beers, etc, so really it could be altitude or exhaustion. We've already been to my two favorite pubs, the Cross Keys ... read more
