So we left Copacabana still not feeling our best but we had been told of a cafe in cuzco that served english breakfasts so we sat on the bus fingers crossed hoping that this was not just a viscous rumour to entice the greedy english! We arrived at our hostel with another english couple we´d met on out bus but unfortunately there was no room at the inn, well no beds in the same room anyway so we spent our first night scattered aruobnd the hostel. I awoke the next day bright and early after a great nights sleep and ventured off to the other rooms to wake the girls. Gina had on her "unimpressed" face as i woke her up after not such a great nights sleep as her room seem to be the designated ... read more

Hi Everyone! I can't believe i haven't put some of these photos on the internet yet... about three weeks ago, Mike and I escaped Cusco for a weekend of relaxation and fun in Ollantaytambo, a tiny town about 2.5 to 3 hours away by bus and combi. it was awesome! We had a great time... Mike couldn't believe how many people were jammed into the combi... he kept counting and re-counting and the most at one time was 24 (there are 12 actual seats.) It was only a short ride (about half an hour) but by the time we got out, Mike couldn't feel anything below his knees and my ankles and toes were totally numb. Such is south america! Being away for the weekend did me a world of good. Teaching is still going well, ... read more

Sorry for the delay! Melia and I had a great trip to Machu Picchu this past weekend!!! We finished our school on Friday and then had a birthday lunch with our host family. It was our madre (here in Cusco, Lucia) Judi´s birthday. There was quite a feast. As with most things here in Peru it involved Coca Cola. Melia´s professora still thinks that there is actual cocaine in the Coke. If you are sick have some Coke and you will feel better. A big night out have some Coke and enjoy the evening. Thirsty have some C..... Well we had a very interesting meatloaf that was specially made for Judi´s Birthday. It was a meatloaf with extra meat, bacon, eggs, and sausage on top of the usual ground beef. It tasted a little bit sweet. ... read more

Okay, so don´t get used to getting an entry from me daily because I know for sure that I won´t be able to provide one for probably most days after we leave Cuzco, but in the meantime, I´ll keep you as informed as possible. I also updated my previous blog with pictures so you might want to check it out - there´s only a couple of them, but they´re still worth looking at. First things first, just to give you all an update, I heard from my mom that my grandfather is not doing well... Apparently he had a heart attack on Friday night and it´s looking like he could only continue to be with us a matter of days or even hours. Please continue to keep my family in your prayers...and I´m very sad to ... read more

A few questions for you: 1) You drive a minibus. It has 14 seats. How many people can you carry? a) 14. You want your passengers to be comfortable and safe. b) At least 20. Preferably more. With sacks and animals too. 2) You drive a taxi. What safety features should it have? a) Crumple zones, airbags, seatbelts, ABS braking, etc. b) None of the above. In fact, if it has them, you should rip them out. And replace them with the following: 1 statue of Jesus, 1 picture of the Virgin Mary, some beads, frilly curtains for the windscreen and most importantly - a very LOUD horn that plays a silly tune. 3) You drive either of the above. Peru's streets make up a grid pattern with many uncontrolled junctions. How should you cross these ... read more

And here I sit having just arrived in Cuzco less than an hour ago. Nancy´s up in our room and I came down to do a quick email check and write up a few thoughts on the past 18 hours. Before I get into the events and other thoughts, I want to say Happy Birthday to Esther, so, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ES!!! I´d call, but I don´t think my oxygen and sleep-deprived mind can totally wrap itself around how to use the phone here quite yet. It´s all I can do to type on this funky keyboard with all the superfluous characters that the Spanish language requires. Okay, so onto the play-by-play… My flight from EWR was fine except for being one of the most turbulent flights I´ve ever been on. Seriously. And for most of the ... read more

My friend Chris and me departed Colombia for Peru, and a two part trip: the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and the Amazon rainforest. After a couple of nights in uninspiring Lima (and a donation to the Casino at the Sheraton) we met with our group of fellow travellers and headed off to Cuzco, arguably the tourist capital of Andean South America. The group was made up of the usual melange of nationalities, with an especially welcome sprinkling of Scandinavians this time. Scandinavians, I am finding, are generally good people to hook up with as they tend to be rather less aggressively arrogant than some of our other European partners (ie the ruthlessly efficient ones or the ones who don´t use deodorant - you know who I mean). There was a wonderful couple from Norway, a ... read more

Hola mi familia! It´s Sunday just over one week from when Melia and I arrived in Cusco. We have finished one week of spanish classes. Melia is doing extremely well and I am beginning to understand the basics. Our host family is extremely nice as are all of the people here in Cusco. Yesterday, we hiked 5km to the ruins called TIPON. They were absolutely beautiful. It is amazing to see the construction techniques used and it is crazy to think that the rocks were all carried up the mountain manually. Don´t know how but clearly the people were stronger than those today. Melia and I are taking dance classes on Monday and Tuesday night. We are learning to the Merengee and Salsa. The classes are very small which is nice since as you all know ... read more

Well, the border wasn’t as bad as some - surly, unfriendly, unhelpful - but we got thru’. Bye Bye Bolivia, Hola Peru! I should have taken the black dogs on the road as an omen, having just been thru’ another bout with my own, and having written thru’ it on the last blog. Can you tell? Anyway, most of the dogs along the way, and there have been many, have been the shaggy, fair-haired sheep dog types, (some very Candy-like), but this morning, across the frontera and into Peru, the first half dozen dogs were black! Sometimes mine is a mangy, street urchin cur, other times a big wolf, in that howl-at-the-moon stance, altho’ always silent, even when he comes close he makes no noise, but I always know he’s there, sometimes just on the periphery, ... read more
