Well I had one good bus ride. just when I thought it was over. this is one of the best bus stories I have to tell. I got to La Paz at 7 am found a bus that left for Cusco at 8 am sweet no delay, I would be In cusco by 8 pm to see my friends. I had t email them to say I would be in at 9pm, bad move. but I was excited to see them after 3 months away and many adventures to tell about. It was advertised as a direct bus to cusco. Direct here means 3 bus companieas, a boat 3 cities and alot of standing around. the first bus went from Lapaz to Coppacabannna. It was the smoothest part of the trip, we had to get off ... read more

It is the winter of our journey, and we are preparing for our final quest. Tomorrow, we set out for the hike through the Inka Trail. As exciting as this trip has been for us, we are both looking forward to real hot showers and drinkable tap water. And personally, what I miss the most is Pho. First, about Cusco. It is truly a beautiful city set in the "Sacred Valley." The architecture is amazing, and the landscape looks like it came straight out of the Japanese anime Naussica, Valley of the Wind, which by the way I highly recommend to all those who have not seen it. Speaking of anime, people continue to talk to me in Japanese, and I am quite frankly tired to saying Chino. So I just Konichiwa back and walk away. ... read more

The hostel is at the top of an impressive hill and its only when we venture into the bar we truely appreciate the amazing view this hostel offers, an uniterrupted panoramic view of the entire town and mountains stretching into the background. We enter our dorm room to the sounds of several Irish people playing and singing Lady in Red, these seem to be veterens of the hostel and we soon learn that they have a very strict cycle of drinking all night and sleeping most the day, then repeat for atleast a week. As we stroll down the steep hill to town it becomes clear that Cusco lives up to its reputation of being a charming and beautiful place, even the street urchins seem quite reserved although there seem to be an increasing amount of ... read more

Estoy aqui, I am here. Just a quick note to let you know that I have made it safe and sound to Cuzco via Atlanta and via Lima. All the flights were uneventful and arrived on time. They were long though! On the flight from Seattle to Atlanta, I met several very nice Native American ambassadors from the Northwest (LaConner, Bellingham, Fife) heading to Peru with the Indigenous Environmental Network to teach in the Peruvian Amazon. Pretty cool huh! I followed them around on the trip, splitting up with them in Lima. Speaking of Lima, I am very very happy to be out of there! Out of the fog! I did not give it much chance though. I arrived at 10:30 at night, spent a few hours in a very nice hostel near the Pacific Ocean ... read more

Well, I got my share of diarrhea. Started during our overnight stay in the Lima airport, continues til now. Got the chills and fever yesterday, but after 2 doses of Cipro I feel much better. Arrived in Cusco yesterday morning, the city is gorgeous, but I was sick, so saved all the exploring for today. We did goto a Korean retaurant last night, the food was amazing, and yes, I ordered RAMEN. God damn I miss asian food. The restaurant is small, 2 rooms with 4 tables. The walls are covered with short messages travelers have left there. If anyone ever visits Cusco, check out this restaurant, and you will see mine and Brian´s name on the wall. Today we will explore the city, take some pictures, and from what I understand, Brian´s treating me to ... read more

After a few hours on the bus and a Rock (Scorpion King) film blaring out the speaker above me i decide to sleep. A few hours later i am awoken by a mix of freezing temperatures and general noise from above which is the finale of War of the Worlds, i was beginning to think that Valium wasn’t such a bad idea after all. I get in the sleeping bag as drift in and out of sleep through the night. As the sun rises the co pilot, who had provided us with dinner of beef shaped like a biscuit and rice and potato, puts in a DVD. The first movie at 6.30am is and all action Dolph Lundgren flick, awful film and all in Spanish and all blaring out the speaker above my head. Next film ... read more

Well after a few days in Lima due to Semana Santa (easter) and all the transport and accomodation being fully booked we were finally able to get out and headed south to Ica and out to the oasis town of Huancachina. We spent just two nights here - Mike and I did the wineries in Ica while Gary visited the bars in Ica! Wineries were classic and our guide was great - able to practice our spanish and on more than one occasion he got to practice his english! We left Ica at 6pm on Monday and for 16 gruelling hours made our way to Cuzco. The bus was comfy enough however we were thrown around all night from side to side and alot of people suffered pretty bad from the change in altutude - little ... read more

Cuzco (altitude: 3,500 m / 11,500 ft), from the Quechua Qosqo (which is now the official spelling) means the “navel of the world” - a name the Incas must have thought fitting for the capital of their mighty empire, which spread some 4,000 kms (2,500 miles) along the Andes from modern day Ecuador to Chile, just south of Santiago (so you get a better idea with more familiar countries, this distance would be the equivalent of going from Lisbon in Portugal to Moscow in Russia). A small part of this huge empire was spread along the fertile Urubamba Valley, known as the “Sacred Valley”, which we visited on a guided tour. Asked to wait for the bus at 8am outside our hotel, we thought we had been lucky when we were picked up pretty much on ... read more

We arrived in Cuzco just before midday and looked for a hostel. We thought we had found a very pleasent place at the right price until the man explained the advertised price was in dollars not soles! We eventually found a hostel within our budget, a run-down converted colonial casa. We have stayed in quite a few colonial buildings some better maintained than others. I can honestly say I am getting to like them. The facia of the building is generally just a large arched split door - no windows. This door leads to a lobby and central courtyard from which all the rooms are accessed. There is a balcony that runs all the way round the first floor. The balcony is generally a darkwood providing a theme for all the woodwork in the building. More ... read more
