18 Abril - Cusco I have felt my destiny in the Plaza de Armas in Cusco as well as in the town square in Urubamba, but mostly in two places. The first was the first time I had visited the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, the first day I was here. It was the first day of Semana Santa, a Monday when thousands of people flock to the plaza to witness the reenactment of an act taken place many years ago. During the last earthquake in 1650, clergy carried a crucifix around the plaza and prayed for the tremor to stop, it did, and now they reenact it every year. Thousands of people turn out, and I felt like I had entered another world...my world. We sat in a coffee shop and chatted; Erik, Jessica, Ben ... read more

17 Abril - Cusco It is Monday night and I am in my room suffering from what might be a sinus infection. I am much better now than I was yesterday. I knew I would get sick, because I went out two nights in a row and didn't give myself enough time to sleep. Plus these bars are filled with cigarette smoke. And, I think I injured my vocal chords singing while dancing and having a great time. That'll teach me, right? My excuse is that I am looking for interaction. I have been feeling lonely lately, needing to fill a gap left by Stacy and by leaving my friends and family to travel. Luckily, travelers from around the world feel the same pangs and it is easy to make new friends. You have to get ... read more

Peru: Lima, Cusco and Machu Pichu (March 31- April 8) The spirit of the Inca is alive- in the mountains, the sky, and in the heart of the Sacred Valley in Peru at Machu Pichu. I began the week flying from Bogota to Lima with an open mind and came away with spiritual enlightenment and one of the most awe-inspiring scenes I will ever see. The Inca people had built this civilization to worship the Gods of nature and founded their economic capital in the city of Cusco and their spiritual center in Machu Pichu, located in the heart of the Sacred Valley. The 4 day hike through the valley was clearly the way to feel and understand the culture of the time and appreciate the ruins of the Incas, who dominated most of South America ... read more

We will start at the beginning, On the 9th we had to find Inka Wasi ( the travel company that was guiding us on the Inca Trail) but no, not so easy. We were given a street name that did not actually exist and also that day the elections were on and most things were closed so it proved to be quite a challenge. We were supposed to check in with the company the day before the trek, so it is easy to see that we were getting a little stressed that it was closed. We went back to place they were supposed to be 3 times and as they say, third time lucky. They were open at 5pm and apparently the admin guy had been waiting outside since 8:30am for people like us, but he ... read more

On Saturday, we decided a good way to kill time before the Incan Trail would be to raft through a Class IV section of the mighty Urubamba River. Most of us had prior rafting experience, so no one was really concerned about falling out. If you fall out, you’re in the water for at most a few seconds then they pull you back out. Worse case scenario, you ride out the rapids for a few more seconds then get scooped up in slower waters. On our bus ride to the starting point, we stopped over a canyon and the guide pointed to the Class IV in the river bend, mentioning there was a chance that we might flip. We all salivated at the idea. The day started out as well as could be expected. When we ... read more

10 Abril - Cusco I walked around Cusco tonight like a ghost. Very few people acknowledged my presence or even made eye contact with me. This is in stark contrast to last night and even earlier today, where everywhere you turn there are children of all ages accosting you to buy this or that, and I've been followed a couple of times by presumably would-be pickpockets. But not tonight. I walked all through the city for about three hours, through some pretty run down areas, and the dogs gave me the most notice. I don't know why, possibly because this is the first day of the holy week prior to Easter, and there were thousands of people here for a ceremony in the Plaza de Armas. What a huge event that was. The whole thing is ... read more

No, not some sordid Iberian sexual peccadillo involving a donkey and a large chorizo that one might see advertised in a phonebox (French lessons?, A & O levels?), but rather stringent pedagogy in a language school in Cusco. My memories of school are mixed. The camaraderie of misehaviour always appealed, but the scars of wedgies gone wrong are slow to heal, and I didn't relish the rigour of excercising my mind any more than was sufficient to remain conscious. Still, the prospect of continuing to flounder for the remainder of my South American journey rankled enough to force me back to study. Day 1 and after inspecting my lodgings and cleaning the contents of the previous occupant's nose from the wall next to my bed, I embarked on a(nother) tour of the city with some ten ... read more

Well our month here in Cusco is almost over. We have loved everyday here!!! The people are so friendly and the city is great. We have enjoyed our family, the school, and the sites in and around the Sacred Valley! We are heading out on Saturday. Tonight we will be having one last Thursday night out for dinner and dancing with the other students from our school. Last week we had a great time and managed to stay out until 2:30 in the morning dancing and we were the first ones to leave! We have been very fortunate and have met some wonderful people at our school. From Japan to Holland to Australia to Wenatchee (2 hours away from Seattle for those of you outside the NW) everyone has been great! Melia and I have greatly ... read more
