After a stinky 15 hour bus ride from Nazca we arrived in Gringolandia AKA Cuzco (the only seats left were the ones right by the toilet) We have been looking forward to getting back to the fresh mountain air and were greated at the bus station by a man who claimed he was from the hostel, and had been asked to pick us up by our new amigos Kerry and Scott. This basically meant we got a free ride to the Hostal and then got attacked with a full throttle sales pitch! It turned out that Scott and Kerry had booked some tours with this agent and mentioned we were turning up. Seeing as it is the low season business can be hard to come by they took the oppurtunity and pounced! We broke free after ... read more

We´ve been living amongst the Incas now for about 10 days here at the centre of their mighty empire. On Friday we will set off for the Manu Reserve - the deepest, darkest, steamiest, primevalest jungle we´ve been able to find in Peru. If this is the last blog you receive, assume we have been chewed to pieces by the mosquitos or perhaps pounced on by a man-eating anteater in the night. With luck, the trip could be as great as our visit to the Galapagos Islands. If nothing else, it´s jaw-clenchingly expensive, albeit nowhere near as expensive as the aforementioned Galapagos. After Manu, it´s off to Arequipa, then Puno, and onward to Bolivia. Meanwhile, some thoughts on the Incas: As everyone knows, they built their amazing mountain-top fortresses without the aid of the wheel. Gigantic ... read more

Hello non-travellers, Well my new adventure starts again. This time i am jetting into Peru on Boxing Day and meeting my girlfriend Dani (whom i met in Bolivia, shes Bolivian/Czech and, well, i'm sure you'll get to know her during the trip). I wish everyone a great christmas and hopefully i'll be in touch just before New Years. It is indeed the 21st of December, and Mike and I are madly packing up our apartment in Vancouver for our south American adventures to begin! Quite frankly, I'm feeling about done with this part of the adventure, I've scrubbed one too many disgusting appliances for my tastes and am totally anxious to be on our way. Leaving for Hawaii pretty damn quick here and then, I'll be back to Vancouver for a day to collect Mike and we're off!! Thank God. That's where it's at now, highly uninteresting.... read more

Back in Cusco, having completed the Inca Trail without too much trauma - hurrah! The day before we started the trail we went to some other Inca ruins just outside Cusco, called Sacsayhuaman (pronounced Sexy Woman!!) - some more examples of the amazing stonework the Incas were famous for, and great views of Cusco too. Then off to small nearby town called Pisac where there are more Inca ruins in the surrounding hills - had a bit of a walk (practice for the Inca Trail) then down into the town to visit the markets. Had Empanadas for lunch from one of the stalls (recommended and made fresh!) - kind of like a cornish pasty but more bread than pastry. Cheese, tomato and onion on the inside - yum! And only 1 sol each (about 15p). Wandering ... read more

Day 34 We arrived in Cusco at 14:30 after a 6 hour bus ride. We had the afternoon to ourselves so we walked around the beautiful town squares. The architechure is a strange mix over Inca style bases and foundations with colonial Spainish built on top. It's a really clean and friendly place. We were all pretty tired from the previous days and we had a few more early starts coming up so we had dinner and got an early night.... read more

After an uneventful journey we arrived in Cusco about 6am and headed for Hostel LoKi that had been highly recommended. After helping ourselves to their complimentary breakfast (whilst waiting for reception to open) we unfortunately found out that the hostel was fully booked for the next couple of days, this despite it not having found its way into LP yet. Fortunately they were able to recommend Hostel Qorichaska which was just round the corner and equally nice. Our first good showers for at least a couple of weeks felt fantastic! As we headed out to explore Cusco, the contrast with Arriquipe was immediately obvious. The massive increase in the number of tourists was accompanied by an equivalent increase in the number of people trying to sell things to us. After completing our most important job of ... read more

Full day in Arequipa, spent some time wandering around the Santa Catalina Convent first. It´s like a small town inside with brightly coloured little cobbled streets, very pretty. Then went for lunch at a rooftop terrace overlooking the Plaza de Armas, which has some fantastic colonial architecture - arches galore! Oh and the obligatory cathedral which has been rebuilt after a couple of earthquakes. (all the places we´ve been so far seem to have this!). Had first taste of coca tea today, supposed to help with altitude sickness. Quite similar to green tea I would say, so of course I loved it! Arequipa is only at 2325m though, so not expecting to feel any symptoms yet... Monday was an early start, although not as early as originally planned - we were supposed to leave Arequipa at ... read more

After the excitement of the jungle we spent a quiet couple of days in Baños, only visiting the El Pailon del Diablo waterfall, before heading to the colonial city of Cuenca. This is a beautiful city, lovely buildings and nice shops. We visited the Pumapungo museum and Inca ruins. Nothing too exciting apart from the section devoted to the ‘Headshrinkers’ - tribes in the Amazon who used to remove and shrink the heads of their enemies in order to gain their power and appease their gods. There were real shrunken heads on show! Next we left Ecuador and headed into Peru via Tumbes, a crazy border town, to the beach resort of Punta Sal. We were amazed at how barren the Peruvian coast line is, hardly a plant in sight. Punta Sal was a great place, ... read more
