Spent the day in town and at the beach. Very calm and great to be able to take off and swim as far as you want. I started doing laps out to a bouy until I felt something on my legs and stomach which turned out to be a school of fairly large fish nibbling on my stomach and legs. I couldn't lose them so finally had to get out of the water. Our last day here so had a leisurely day relaxing on the beach, read, paid bills on line and updated this journal. Tomorrow we are headed to the small town (poplulation 600) of Minca, about 45 minutes away in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Martas at about 650 meters elevation. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest coastal mountain range in ... read more

Another great day, hardly any wind. Went to breakfast and rented a double kayak to paddle to some beaches nearby. Nice beach, pretty large, about a 20 minute walk or kayak. No places to stay but lots of restaurants, mostly Colombians on vacation on the beach. Paddled back to Taganga for more swimming and sun. Met up with Dennis again, he said he had been planning to leave for the last 2 days but is still here. Spent the day on the beach, reading and relaxing. Met up with Mau and had lunch. Back to the hotel to take a shower and talk with the guy from Vermont who is studying and enjoying his diving course. Rolf and his wife are leaving today to fly back to Germany. They left us bottles of rum and the ... read more

Nice day again, even less wind. Had breakfast and went to the dive shop to get fitted out with gear for snorkelling. Mau (short for Mauricius) was our guide, great guy in his 20s. He is Colombian but was sent to boarding school in England, then went to college in Florida and lived in New York studying film and theater. He decided that he likes diving and the ocean in Colombia a lot better so came back to teach diving. He's very into the environment. His favorite saying is "very cool". Took the boat out to some coral about 4km away with an Argentinian couple, he was diving and she snorkelling. Nice coral and fish but the water is a bit cloudy because it is out in the open sea, still, nice snorkelling. Lots of brain ... read more

Another beautiful day, the wind has died down quite a bit. Power is still out in Taganga but some places with generators are still open. Had a great breakfast with amazing coffee and fresh juice at the El Reef coffee shop. Dennis stopped by so we all had breakfast together. Checked out diving at the dive shop next door on the Main Street, Nautilus. Decided to go snorkelling to see if it is worth diving. The snorkelling is $40,000 cop per person, meeting about 8:30 in the morning and coming back around 1:30. We signed up for the next day. Off to the beach for more swimming and sun. Had lunch at Restaurante Hollandia, a good place to eat off the Main Street. Back to the hotel for showers and ran into the German couple, Rolf, ... read more

Boats at Taganga Day 2

Went to Casa Viena and caught a minibus for Taganga, a white sand beach about 3 km past Santa Marta, with Dennis. About a four and a half hour drive through some dry, scrubby coastline, dotted with beaches and hotels here and there along the way. Arrived in Taganga about twelve thirty and went to our hotel on the hill above called Casa Technos Azules (blue roofs). Very nice place, blue and white with lots of plants, hammocks, kitchen and sitting areas. Our room is on the end of the complex so lots of good breezes and privacy, 50,000 cop ($25). It is located on top of a hill with amazing views. The only other buildings on this hill are two gated mansions so it´s very quiet and private. We have to walk down a steep ... read more

Taganga is located on the coast about 4 hours east of Cartagena, it was once a small fishing village now it's home to countless scuba dive shops only outnumbered by backpackers, most of whom seem to be from Australia. The town still remains mostly undeveloped, trying hard to hold onto that small town atmosphere, so far this has been our favorite town. Immediatly upon arriving, before even finding a room for the night, we booked a 2 tank dive in the afternoon with Aquantis dive center. The diving here is some of the best in Colombia and some of cheapest in the world. Most of the divers we met here were getting their certification, other than the instructors and dive masters, we were the most experienced divers on the boat (that's not saying much..lol). We spent ... read more

So z. B. in Cartagena.

Snow in Ecuador and Foam Attacks in Colombia White Water Rafting Adventure After our stint on the Galapagos Islands we spent another 2 weeks in Ecuador. We participated in various adventure sport activities in Banos. One day we sped down a raging river and on another day we zip-lined over a gorge. White water rafting is a great adrenaline sport. We went through rapid after rapid. There wasn´t really time to just relax. The only time we had to get out of the boat was when we approached grade 6 rapids (the most difficult rapids and you only really do them if you are a hardcore pro). Well our guides held their boats on a line while walking down the side of the river and promptly lost one boat after one of the guides stumbled and ... read more

Hello Again! I woke up early this morning so I am on a role with the blog writing! It can be hard to sleep after sunrise because the room heats up very quickly without A.C.! We are in a very beautiful place on the carribean coast called Taganga! It is a small vishing village with rocky street, steep hills and striking views. We have hiked around the hills to different beaches and coves and really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. There are ALL types of tourists here and A LOT of development going on down by the beach. We were all wondering what this quiet fshing villiage must have been like a few years back before backpackers have made it their extended stop over! Last night we went to the Israeli hostel and had a shabbat dinner ... read more
