We are headed to Colombia for six weeks and thought we'd try a travel blog On this trip to keep in touch with friends.

Much more comfortable in the tent and mattress scenario. Got up at 6:45 and hit the trail out of the park. Beautiful sunrise. Had a wonderful walk through the jungle to Piscina beach. Saw lots of birds, crabs, lizards and a group of squirrel (?) monkeys. Small and cute with white faces, tails and legs. Walked past one pristine white sand beach after another with the sounds of the jungle and a cool breeze. Seemed to take a lot less time to walk out than in. Stopped at Arrecifes and had a cold mango and bannana smoothie. Heaven. Met up with Mariam at the restaurant, who is also walking out. Had an amazing walk out of the jungle with a cool breeze whistling through the trees. Beautiful, didn't want it to end. Got to the end ... read more

Woke up with a bad stomach but only lasted the morning. Back to the beach to relax, swim and read. Got a good picture of an iguana on a rock a few feet away. Peter (the Brit) got a call from London that a large earthquake had just hit Chile. Thought about catching a boat back to Taganga with Peter and his two friends but it never showed up. Boat usually arrives around noon and leaves about 3. The ride back is a bit rough but not as bad as from Taganga to Tayrona. The ranger called them on his cell and they said they would come out if we rented the whole boat for 340,000. Normally, you can bargain them down to 25,000 pp if they are heading back. We decided not to do it ... read more

Got up at 6:30, packed up and went into town for breakfast and a walk. Back to the hotel to wait for the minibus which is supposed to pick us up between 9:30 and 10:30. Picked us up at 10:15 (15,000 cop each) for the hour and a half bus ride to Tayrona National Park. Roddy was also on the bus. Stopped at a supermarket along the way for food. Although the guy at Casa San Philipe told us food was very expensive and to bring as much as possible, we found out this is not the case. It is best to go as light as possible and just bring a small bottle of water or something to drink along the way. Nice ride through jungle and small areas of development, some areas drier with more ... read more

Woke up to the sounds of birds, frogs and cicadas. Got ready and into town by 7 45. Taxi was waiting with 4 people already in it and Roddy coming down the street. I squeezed into the front seat with the driver and a grandmother. Peter and Roddy got into the back with mama and her daughter. The grandmother kept crossing herself as we went around the corners. When we got near town the taxi began doing the scenic route through the suburbs, dropping off and picking up items. Got to the Santa Marta "bus station" safely and disengaged ourselves from the taxi. Walked through a large market area to pick up the minibus to Taganga. Had breakfast with Roddy at one of the restaurants there. arepas con huevos (fried corn meal pockets filled with eggs, ... read more

Had breakfast, a great fried pastry with potatoes and eggs inside and a wonderful cilantro sauce, for $0.35, and coffee for $0.40. Decided to walk out to the Arimaka waterfalls about an hour walk away. It used to be used by the Kogi Indians for a ceremonial site but now it´s just used for swimming. The Kogi indians are very suspicious of outsiders and feel that if someone takes a picture of them it can steal their soul, we have seen a few and they look at us warily. Beautiful walk through the jungle with lots of colorful butterflies and birds, large flocks of Toucans. About 2/3rds of the way in Roddy passed us on the back of a motorcyle. What a cheater. Met up with him at the pools below the falls. The falls are ... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta February 23rd 2010

Caught a minibus to Santa Marta at 7 am (15 min, 1,200 COP) and then a taxi for the half hour trip up to Minca ($5,000 COP each). Paved road with potholes, pretty steep and with lots of sharp turns. The taxi would stall in low gear so we had a Mario Andretti drive up the hills. Arrived about 8:30 in one piece, and so did the taxi, suprisingly enough. Minca is a small town surrounded by jungle. There are several rivers running through it. We liked the town and people immediately, just two paved streets running perpendicular to each other with dirt roads running off them here and there. No signs or directions, so we asked a local and he walked us to some small hotels along the Rio Minca. We chose Casa Santander, about ... read more

South America » Colombia » Taganga February 22nd 2010

Spent the day in town and at the beach. Very calm and great to be able to take off and swim as far as you want. I started doing laps out to a bouy until I felt something on my legs and stomach which turned out to be a school of fairly large fish nibbling on my stomach and legs. I couldn't lose them so finally had to get out of the water. Our last day here so had a leisurely day relaxing on the beach, read, paid bills on line and updated this journal. Tomorrow we are headed to the small town (poplulation 600) of Minca, about 45 minutes away in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Martas at about 650 meters elevation. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest coastal mountain range in ... read more

Another great day, hardly any wind. Went to breakfast and rented a double kayak to paddle to some beaches nearby. Nice beach, pretty large, about a 20 minute walk or kayak. No places to stay but lots of restaurants, mostly Colombians on vacation on the beach. Paddled back to Taganga for more swimming and sun. Met up with Dennis again, he said he had been planning to leave for the last 2 days but is still here. Spent the day on the beach, reading and relaxing. Met up with Mau and had lunch. Back to the hotel to take a shower and talk with the guy from Vermont who is studying and enjoying his diving course. Rolf and his wife are leaving today to fly back to Germany. They left us bottles of rum and the ... read more
Taganga Sunset Day 4

South America » Colombia » Taganga February 20th 2010

Nice day again, even less wind. Had breakfast and went to the dive shop to get fitted out with gear for snorkelling. Mau (short for Mauricius) was our guide, great guy in his 20s. He is Colombian but was sent to boarding school in England, then went to college in Florida and lived in New York studying film and theater. He decided that he likes diving and the ocean in Colombia a lot better so came back to teach diving. He's very into the environment. His favorite saying is "very cool". Took the boat out to some coral about 4km away with an Argentinian couple, he was diving and she snorkelling. Nice coral and fish but the water is a bit cloudy because it is out in the open sea, still, nice snorkelling. Lots of brain ... read more
Taganga Sunset Day 3

South America » Colombia » Taganga February 19th 2010

Another beautiful day, the wind has died down quite a bit. Power is still out in Taganga but some places with generators are still open. Had a great breakfast with amazing coffee and fresh juice at the El Reef coffee shop. Dennis stopped by so we all had breakfast together. Checked out diving at the dive shop next door on the Main Street, Nautilus. Decided to go snorkelling to see if it is worth diving. The snorkelling is $40,000 cop per person, meeting about 8:30 in the morning and coming back around 1:30. We signed up for the next day. Off to the beach for more swimming and sun. Had lunch at Restaurante Hollandia, a good place to eat off the Main Street. Back to the hotel for showers and ran into the German couple, Rolf, ... read more
